I like this version, but I don't love it. I came here from the Marilyn Scott version of this track, which I also like but don't love. Listening to this I realised the weakness in the Marilyn Scott version, because I think this track has the same weakness: it's the un-natural stressing in the "without" of "without you". This has the effect of drawing the listener's attention away from the music, and forcing them to focus on unusual phrasing which doesn't actually add to the meaning of the lyrics.
@amylNRG different tempo / time signature means that is going to happen but after all it is a cover. i think its a great example of 1970s funk and a track with so much soul in it, something that modern music has none of.
Betty Everett possesses a voice of depth & beauty hard to describe & the more u play her classic stuff, this great one easily becomes an addiction, but what a lovely one...late in her recording came this magnificent "God Only Knows" from her Fantasy Records period and that collection is a keeper...Bravo Betty & RIP
WOW! I never knew this but its a cover song by the beach boys? I wonder, did Betty Everett write this song? If so, she was a wonderful song writer. I guess LInda Rondsat (sp?) also did a cover of her other hit....baby your no good! No how come I've never heard of Betty Everett? Is it possible she was left out of the lime-light. What a shame!
Nevermind< i got it wrong. She is the cover from the Beach Boys! But, Linda did do a cover song of hers....still never heard of her. What else songs is she famous for?
@itsbjtime She and Jerry Butler did the most famous duet version of "Let It Be Me" after The Everly Brothers. Betty is best known for "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" and several others. If you type her name at iTunes or Amazon you'll probably get a greatest hits cd to pop up and can hear clips of the songs.
What a beautiful voice she had!
