I live about 75 miles from Whitefish Point and I've spent alot of time thru the years in the Paradise and Whitefish Point area. That song still gives me a chill. Too bad they won't let you use it.
I thank you for your excellent photos, but your choice of music could not have been much worse. You must be a very conflicted person, an interesting boat nerd who is somehow fascinated by substandard music.
This ship set sail on a calm day and went down in the middle of, I think, Lake Michigan. All hands died. Most of the men on that ship were between 18 and 25 years old. It's history. And this song is NOT what I thought it was. Why would anyone ruin a song by turning it techno ( am guessing the genre here). The tragedy is this song.
Why must some people ridicule this? Its a peice of Folklore and its dedicated to the crew and the ship who lost their lives. The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald will always be remembered in Wi History
why didnt you just you gordon lightfoot for because that song truly fits the ship because of the name of her i wasnt born when she sank but i have heard gordon lightfoots wreck of the edmund fitzgerald song its very emotional
Screw WMG there greedy bastards maybe we cant afford to buy every album from every artist they have signed. fucking multi-billion dollar industry wants it all, I will never buty another CD from their label and i encourage every1 else to do the same. let em see what its like to be poor and how some of us appreciate music, even though we may not be able to buy every fucking song they own.Fuck Corporate America listen to Bostons Corporate America lyrics for free. Not to overlook or make light of the tragedy that this song is about, but: What are the odds that a song like this would not only be played on the radio in the '70s, but actually do well in the "top 40" (where disco and a lot of mindless pop lived)? The song is as appealing as it is emotional, which is a tribute to Lightfoot's songwriting, singing, and musicianship.

It would be fairly eay to crew a ship that big with only 29 men as you must remember that they didn't need sails to help them get any where and people to work the sails, so really just the cooks the captains and a few engineers for their respective jobs and then the rest would be for just hepling or other miscellaneous jobs.
live in wisconsin myself. ever research the life expectancy of a sailor on the great lakes a hundred-fifty years ago? the lakes are more dangerous than the oceans
no it was that the hatch had been damaged by heavy seas and so as the ship took on water she becane unstable and then took a rorouge wave by the stern witch pushed to bow of the ship under water and since the Fitzgerald was longer than the lake was deep at the point which she sank the bow hit the lake bed and the ship broke in 2 if u read see the wreck u see that if she broke up on the serface than there would have been a clean brake the mid section was crumpled showing that she hit bottom hard.

My dad worked at the Huron docks - he new Capt. Mcsorley who always ran fast - was never late - I was shooten hoops in the driveway when he came home early and said the Fitz went donw near WFB . . . like yesterday.
The Fitzgerald took a huge wave from the stern and caused the bow to nose-dive to the bottom because she was flooding after the hull was compromised after passing over a shallow, rocky shoal at Carribou Island. This is the only logical explanation. The wave that doomed the Fitz had hit the Anderson miles behind her. It was only a matter of time. She was sinking regardless of the crew's efforts.
