im new at knitting just started yesterday,,so far I really enjoy it ..your videos are very helpful and you speak very clearly but for someone like me it would be great if you could do your tutorials in some slow motion...thanks
It would probably be helpful if you took time to talk about how to start the scarf. Suddenly, the beginning is already done and it was never explained how to cast on.
@seattlegrobanite Hello! We do have separate videos that go over how to cast on and how to do the knit stitch (both continental and english style) that might be helpful if you are just starting out. The beginning of the video covers what techniques are used so those new to knitting can learn the basics first before moving onto a scarf. Good luck and happy knitting!
Knitting is frustrating. I get 2 rows (the cast on row and the one row after the first turn). But on the third row I cannot get it to work. I always end up with problems. I've tried 5 times and cant get past the second row.
@MitchSmithFilms Hi Can you describe what is different once you knit the third row or what is seems to be causing the issue? Let us know and we will try to help get things on track for you, thanks!
@knitpicks I think my problem was using very small yarn and needles and I was just knitting wrong at parts since it was easy to get it mixed up with yarn and needles that small for a first time knitter.
@bubznumber1 knitting diagonally is usually referred to knitting on the bias, which is done by every other row - you start out with an increase and end with a decrease. To make your diagonal stripe lean in the other direction, decrease first and then increase at the end.
@Burberryxo It sounds like you are adding in extra stitches, this commonly happens to new knitters by forming accidental yarnovers that get knit. If you find your yarn in the front of your knitting, move it to the back in between your needles. If you simply move it to the back by placing it over your needles, you will get a yarnover. When this gets knitted on the following row, you will have an extra stitch.
@wormyyeah if you are using a medium weight worsted yarn, you would roughly need between 400-500 yards, depending on how long you want your scarf. That yardage is usually good for scarves about 7-10" wide and 60-70" long - depending on what stitch you are using.
When I used to knit when i was in elementary school, my scarves would end up really rough and tight and stiff. How do you make them soft and light like the ones you buy?
@sgtank123 Like the previous suggestion, you could try soaking your scarf - if it is made of wool, use wool wash and usually that tends to soften it up a bit. However, if it is wool - do not put it in the dryer, otherwise your scarf will felt. If your scarf seems tight, try using larger needles to get a looser, fluffier texture to your knitting. Good luck and happy knitting!
@NcoleyCP Hello! If you have never knitted before, you might try checking out our tutorials on how to cast on stitches and how to do the knit stitch. It will probably help clear up any questions, good luck with your scarf!
@idontcarejj To knit a scarf lengthwise, you would need to start on the vertical edge - meaning you cast on the number of stitches it would take to make the scarf as long as you want it to be. For example, if your yarn is 4 stitches to the inch and you want a scarf that is 60 inches long, you would have to cast on 240 stitches. Then you knit as wide as you want your scarf to be. You only have to add in a purl if you want stockinette stitch or ribbing.
@toober83 If you are knitting in stockinette stitch (where you knit one row, then purl one row) the sides and edges will naturally want to curl inwards. To help this, you can knit a garter stitch border (knit every row) at the bottom and the edges. Simply start by only knitting for a few rows, then switch to knitting one row/purling the next row, but keep maybe 3 or 4 stitches on both sides that you only knit. That should help it stay flat.
@TheCelebrityGurl Hello! Right around the 2:40 mark in the video, it shows how what to do to start a new row. At the end of a row, all of the stitches should be on your right hand needle. Simply switch your needles so the full needle is back in your left hand and the empty needle is in your right hand, and just start knitting into the first stitch like you did on the row before. If you need more info, try searching for "knit stitch" on the Knit Picks channel for a video on just that technique.
@zoe7485591 Hi! We do have many videos on how to start knitting! The first step is learning how to cast on your stitches, then knit, and then purl. Simply search the Knit Picks channel for "knit stitch" to see two different ways of knitting and search for "purl stitch" to see two different ways of purling. The main difference between the two ways is mainly how to hold you yarn. To start, search the Knit Picks channel for "cast on" to get started, good luck and happy knitting :)
@Kerenzie if you search our Knit Picks channel for "knit stitch" you will find two videos. One is for the english style and the other for continental, the only difference is how you hold the yarn. Those videos should be good to get you started on the scarf, good luck!
@iDiskostixx Only if you can knit fairly evenly and have the patience for nearly 64,000 garter stitches xD Oh and the scarf is about 14 feet long with 66 stitches wide for the original.
@TheAsiamaczuga Yes - you can use any yarn you want for a scarf, but having it be thicker will make it easier to work with at first. If you use a super bulky, you will simply have to cast on fewer stitches. to figure out how many you need, find out the number of stitches per inch (this should be on the ball band). Say, for your super bulky you have 3.5 stitches per inch and you want a scarf that is 6 inches wide. Simply take 3.5 x 6 = 21, that is how many to cast on for your yarn then.
@TheAsiamaczuga yep! just cast on fewer stitches. Or you can take your stitches per inch and multiply that against how many inches wide you want your scarf to be - that should give you the number of stitches you need to cast on.
@foysalmahmud21 If you search the Knit Picks channel for "casting on loop method" you will find how to start a slip knot and get your stitches onto the needle.
@foysalmahmud21 If you search the Knit Picks channel for "casting on loop method" you will find how to start a slip knot and get your stitches onto the needle.
i think my rows are getting bigger and bigger...my needle is longer than how wide i want my scarf...so i just made my cast on half the lenght of my needle...ive already done about 20 rows, each one gets longer and longer....was i supposed to count? or is this normal...
@xDoee Yes, it is always good to know how many stitches you are starting out with...that way you know if are are accidentally adding in stitches. If there are holes in your knitting, you are accidentally putting the yarn over your needle from front to back instead of always having your yarn in the back for the knit stitch. Also, when you start a row, make sure that when you bring your yarn to the back that you go under the needle and back, not over the needle and back.
@koolkatjadegirl02 Youtube does not allow links in comments, however if you search for "knit stitch" and "purl stitch" those are the basics to learn how to knit. if you don't know how to cast on stitches, you will have to do that first and if you search for "cast on" you will find a video tutorial for that as well.
im having problem with my scarf project, i dont know why it rolled up into skinny scarf. Does it have to do with my needle size or the tension i pulled while i knitted. I used size 10 needle and worsted weigh yarn and do i have to k2, p2 to prevent it to roll up like that? thanks
@il0v3l0ck3rh0tti3 this sounds like you are adding in yarnovers by accident, pay special attention to always keep your yarn in the back for the knit stitch. if it falls in the front, take care to bring it to the back in between your needles and not just over your right hand needle.
other than that, if your holes are unraveling, that means you have dropped a stitch.
Your a really good knitter so maybe you'll understand my problem. When ever i knit about 3 inches into my scarft it starts going outwards and widens, then it starts to look all lop sided. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening
@naruto0694 I take mine everywhere too!!! I LOVE it. I'm not very good yet, so sometimes this is a problem because I'll stop paying complete attention--and then I lose a stitch or something, haha
when ever i have tried a scars on straight needles, it always curls at the edges, why hasnt the scarf in this video done that? is it becauese the person in this video is using round needles?
Last fall I was elk hunting and I thought an orange scarf would be nice to have in my pack for when I stop and watch a meadow for elk as it gets dark. I have some needles and yarn and am practicing. The ends of my rows are very loose and I keep having to start over...
Gosh knitting is hard i have been trying to make a scarf for like 2 weeks now i think i am making it harder then it really is i haven't be productive at all i keep undoing my cast ons and is it suppose to be tight please someone help me
Just cast them on tight enough so that they don't slide down the needle as you are knitting. They should just "surround" the needle not hug it. Try looking at some other beginning knitting videos. ALSO notice in THIS video how the stitches move on the needle as she pushes them around. That's how they should look. Good luck and happy knitting. P.S. I know how you feel--you'll get a feel for it. AND don't be a perfectionist.
@NZavala18 I had the exact same problem! When you're transferring the stitch from the left needle to the right needle, once you've added the loose bit of wool to your knitting (that is, once you've done the stitch) you can discard the stitch from the left needle. You don't have to push it onto the right needle, I think. That's what I was doing wrong anyway.
you mean like how much yarn? well I found out that if a scarf is around the same length as the height of the person wearing it, it fits really well :)
about the yarn amount, just ask in the shop where you buy it, they'll know how much you need for that specific type of yarn ^_^ (hope this helped)
@datzDope that really depends on how fast you're knitting.. I"ve finished mine (160cm) in one week.. but if you're beginner and not using basic stitches, it may take more time.
This looks pretty easy if you keep it simple... Crochet is very easy too, but tricky on the counting bit... I'm crocheting a hat. It's looking great but my hands hurt so much after likes 15 rows. I have done so many rows already and I still need to work on the depth. UGH! I think I might do this as christmas presents. My family is moving to the US and they'll need the warm stuff.
im excited to learn to knit! i know how to crochette, and when i do it, i fell old! haha even though im 13. :) winter is here and i dont want to waste mony on scarfs and stuff so this is perfect!
@tierra399 Me too! haha, I'm 22 years old, and knitting and crocheting are so much fun. I'm better at crocheting, I'm in the beginning stages of learning to knit, it's hard having to hold both the needles grrr :)
Yes, you can knit straight on a circular needle but when you get to the ends you have to turn your work and therefore you would have to purl the other side across if you wanted the stockinette stitch. I too don't like purling :-)
Thanks! Your video was very helpful. I have a question. As a keep knitting more and more rows it gets wider. Why is this happening and how to I stop it from happening?
hi, I love the tutorial, but I have a really annoying problem with my scarves. (I knit a lot)
*How do you get your edges so straight and amazing? My edges tend to curl up on themselves, and I don't get that straight edge (on the edge of the scarf that runs the entire length) Please help!!!!!!!!
I did the exact same thing ahahaa, I had about 50 stitches. I got to about 40 or so rows then just unravelled it and started again with 25 stitches. I had loads of holes anyway where I'd dropped, so it was a good idea ahah. If I were you, I'd just keep it as a memory of your attempts ahaha. I would have done that, but I really wanted the wool ahaha.
Excellent and really easy to understand! Thank you very much!

When you're transferring the stitch from the left needle to the right needle, once you've added the loose bit of wool to your knitting (that is, once you've done the stitch) you can discard the stitch from the left needle. You don't have to push it onto the right needle, I think. That's what I was doing wrong anyway.

I used size 8 needles for my scarf, (still making it) and a more bulky yarn. I have been Knitting and Crocheting for about 2-3 years.

I'm gonna knit a scarf for my girlfriend for Christmas! =D Anybody know how long roughly will it take to get a decent length scarf?
datzDope 2 years ago
you mean like how much yarn? well I found out that if a scarf is around the same length as the height of the person wearing it, it fits really well :)
about the yarn amount, just ask in the shop where you buy it, they'll know how much you need for that specific type of yarn ^_^ (hope this helped)

@datzDope that really depends on how fast you're knitting.. I"ve finished mine (160cm) in one week.. but if you're beginner and not using basic stitches, it may take more time.
digimai 2 years ago
I would say about 6 ft. long should be pretty good....I'm doing the same thing for my gf too :) Good luck man! Merry Christmas :)

@datzDope it took me about a week to make my first one
Beauty12870 2 years ago
it depends on how fast you knit, if you do it every day for a few hours a day, you can finish one in a few weeks.

@tierra399 Me too! haha, I'm 22 years old, and knitting and crocheting are so much fun. I'm better at crocheting, I'm in the beginning stages of learning to knit, it's hard having to hold both the needles grrr :)

umm.....is it possible to knit in the round to make a scarf? just wondering, because i don't really enjoy purl stitching. but yea, just wondering!
forevamore123 2 years ago
Yeah you can all you need to do is just not join the two sides together :)
MySocksAreFuzzy 2 years ago
oh, and you dont need to purl - make a garter stitch scarf :D x
dodders5 2 years ago
Yes, you can knit straight on a circular needle but when you get to the ends you have to turn your work and therefore you would have to purl the other side across if you wanted the stockinette stitch. I too don't like purling :-)

Thanks! Your video was very helpful. I have a question. As a keep knitting more and more rows it gets wider. Why is this happening and how to I stop it from happening?
kelseyjo95 2 years ago
this is so amazing it helped me so much

billybobbabes 2 years ago
hi, I love the tutorial, but I have a really annoying problem with my scarves. (I knit a lot)
*How do you get your edges so straight and amazing? My edges tend to curl up on themselves, and I don't get that straight edge (on the edge of the scarf that runs the entire length) Please help!!!!!!!!
xxAurora 3 years ago
You could fold your piece of knitting into thirds when you are done and turn it into a clutch purse after you sew the sides together.
