Congratulations! I am aguitar player but I just recently took up the mandolin and it's inspiring to watch and listen to such a masterful technique. (p.s. My dog is called 'Fuga' after this piece!)
Marverous performance. I was very amased to know that one of the Bach's masterpiece for violin can be played by mandilin. Thank you for your excellent video.
First I wondered how it could be possible to play such a polyphonic fuga on a mandolin on which usually are performed monophonic melodies. Bur I remenbered this is not a trancription but an arrangement because mandolin is tuned as same as violin. However this is a brilliant and surprising performance. Thanks a lot and Bravo
That guy has the longest, skinniest fingers I've ever seen, particularly his little finger. His left hand looks like a spider weaving a web. Creeps me out. It really does and I have a hard time watching him play, but DAMN he sure can play some mandolin!
Thanks you for your comment. The plectrum used here is the so-called 'Roman' plectrum. It is indeed long; about 6,5 cm. From tutors written in the long history of the (Italian) mandolin we learn that the wooden- and the birds feather quill - and later those of tortoise shell - always have been quite long and narrow. Only from ca. 1880 the tortoise shell plectrum appeared in a much smaller and a triangle shape. And this only in/around Neaples.
It really bugs me that performers like Sebastiaan here are few and far between in the US. I really LIKE hearing Bach on the mandolin. I like to play Bach on my mandolin (of course I can't play like this!!). His performance really stands out. Thank you very much for posting this!!

how do you play polyphone with a plektrum?
cihad2003 7 months ago
Hi @cihad2003, Like with the bow of the violin; listen to the sound(s) of yourself and to the voices you (and the composer) want to sound. Good luck!

Hello @ericoschmitt, the mandolin is tuned like the violin; G-d-a-e. Greetings from Holland.
