I don't think any of the RE4 betas would have been better than the final game. The grass is always greener on the other side, people would whine their asses off if RE4's main enemy was black fog, or if it had Silent Hill esque monsters. I loved RE4, the gameplay was a necessary evolution from the dated gameplay of Code Veronica. But I do hope Capcom takes a few hints from Dead Space 1&2 and gets the series back to its horror roots. Fingers crossed for RE: Revelations!
the reason why it got cancelled is because capcom wanted the game to be available for the ps2 too, and the ps2 couldn't handle these graphics, and because it almost had nothing to do with resident evil at all, it had ghosts and shit so they decided to do it all over again

i love how the graphics are better in the beta versions than in the final product, i understand why they didnt do it though. while re4 had no zombies it was still centered around a mass infection and this is more like silent hill. oh and the fog creature looks like the ouroburos BOW

I remember in 2003 reading about this and seeing pics of the fog and I was so into it and could not wait to play it but when I heard it was delay I was pissed and we got re4 for gamecube and it was an ok game but 3.5 are always in my wildest dreams like I hope capcom will remake this idea and call it something else
@Toasty3D Only reason they dropped it was because NO ONE played RE: Gaiden on the GBA.. this was going to be the follow up to that, Leon was infected at the end, and it lead him to this.. mansion place. But because lack of sales, the droped RE:Gaiden from the canon and we got RE4 of today... really wish they would go back to this kinda thing, when it was actually scary and not all Action Evil.
@Toasty3D they did something with the RE4 beta's.. two things to be precise: 1 Devil May Cry 1 and some parts were reused for a game called Demento (Haunting Graund).. but there are so little things in those games demento has some maps just minorly tweaked and DMC1 barely anything at all...

@DeweyTheTotodile true, then again i was shiting bricks when i first encountered the regenerators in RE4. It went from hostile spanish people, to parasite heads, to this unstoppable monster with one weak point that could kill you very quickly.
@KurikazuTheWarrior To me RE 4 and 5 aren't that scary. . They're 3rd person shooters (good ones I might add) with some creepy moments, but that's it. Revelations is gonna be a real survival horror game again, in 3rd person. Could make it a lot more intense. But you're right about the creatures. I want the skinheads and dogs back.
@DeweyTheTotodile the only scary moment in 5 was Wesker, not the final fight the one before it. Knowing wesker was fucking pissed and ready to literally beat the shit out of you. Other than that i like 5 but its not much scary.

@Quimeradefuego666 you are ignorant. I played RE0, RE1, RE2, RE Outbreak File 1 and 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Resident Evil 4, and finally Resident Evil 5. I enjoyed them all but didnt like RE5 due to the fact that once you play through the game once its boring, unlike the others in which are awesome no matter how many times you play it.
I never liked RE5 not for the lack of zombies, or that your in the open and not so many cramped places, for me I found it to fast paced, more of a shoot them up, than a horror survival, nothing keeping you on the edge apart from your partner dieing.
RE4 was interesting, is was more of a shoot them up with every odd enemy you gun down you have some ammo to pick up, but you still had that sence of isolation, I would like capcom to go back to the older games, I loved RE remake.
Man RE 4 was awesome if you experienced the first 3 when they were RELEASED. Seeing the series evolve to 4 was a great experience and even though I think it's time to go back to their roots, don't trash RE 4 just because 5 had too much action. RE 4 was one of the best games ever made, I usually don't trash opinions but if you think 4 sucks than you don't know crap about gaming. 4 was almost flawless.

Supposedly, the reason they cancelled this version was because Leon was to die at the end because he became infected with the virus, and the majority of the development team didn't like that, so they started work on the "Hook-man" version of RE4, which eventually became the RE4 that we all know today.

The final version didnt had anything to do with RE, it only got the title and Leon and Ada, the story was totally unrelated, the game was repetitive, the characters where pretty cartoony, the customization on the weapons was broken....
I loved the bosses in this game but outside that i didnt find anyhting else to like. As an action game, is nice, as an horror game, is pretty bad...as a RE game is extremelly disapointing

@steightst8 it's good to see that there's people that think like me, those Beta versions looks more like a Silent Hill wannabe than Resident Evil, I really liked RE4, the controls got improved, the enemies more deadly and smart and you still have some of the atmosphere of the classics, specially at the island part. And RE5, it's notable that it lost most of the horror aspect and got action instead of it, but it doesn't mean it sucks, it's a real good game but loses to RE4 in matter of atmosphere

I like this BETA version of Resident evil 4. Though, since the ending of this beta is of Leon dying, then that would be something to change. RE4 itself is okay. it's surely better than RE5. I may have not beaten RE4 yet but I know this for a fact xD
I feel that if Resident evil 4 WASN"T an RE game, but a completely different game with the SAME gameplay and a similar story, it wouldn't of been as popular and Survival Horror would still be alive in its natural form.

If I remember right, Leon would get injected or infected or infested with some sort of virus and as a result: experience the trippy stuff you see here...OR it's something totally different:)

@921sora yeah I'm not gonna lie, these scrapped versions look really interesting, but I'm fine with RE4 as it is. I recently replayed it on the ps2 and it was really good fun still after all these years spent in HD gaming...but yeah I would still try out the thing in the video. Maybe Capcom still has it on some kind of DVD in their offices, just like Ubisoft probably keeps their Prince of Persia Kindred Blades version somewhere around:)

The voice actor for Leon, Paul Mercier; said in the Beta, Capcom planned to kill off Mr.Kennedy by the virus's power but they chose to use him later on.
However in my opion, the producers should have at least kept the game's, atmosphere. Yeah it does have a Silent Hill feel but at least release a Beta demo in a gaming magazine so you can make better judgement calls based off where the project is heading.

@Quimeradefuego666 you are ignorant. I played RE0, RE1, RE2, RE Outbreak File 1 and 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Resident Evil 4, and finally Resident Evil 5. I enjoyed them all but didnt like RE5 due to the fact that once you play through the game once its boring, unlike the others in which are awesome no matter how many times you play it.

I never liked RE5 not for the lack of zombies, or that your in the open and not so many cramped places, for me I found it to fast paced, more of a shoot them up, than a horror survival, nothing keeping you on the edge apart from your partner dieing.
RE4 was interesting, is was more of a shoot them up with every odd enemy you gun down you have some ammo to pick up, but you still had that sence of isolation, I would like capcom to go back to the older games, I loved RE remake.

Man RE 4 was awesome if you experienced the first 3 when they were RELEASED. Seeing the series evolve to 4 was a great experience and even though I think it's time to go back to their roots, don't trash RE 4 just because 5 had too much action. RE 4 was one of the best games ever made, I usually don't trash opinions but if you think 4 sucks than you don't know crap about gaming. 4 was almost flawless.

Change ending to fit story, but remake!!!! Doesn't really look bad the way it is even!!! Just say it happened before or after RE4 and go for it. This could have the origional feel of the resident evil games (1,2,3). I say why not? They already put the work in? If people buy it, cool. ( which i think they would, i would).

Supposedly, the reason they cancelled this version was because Leon was to die at the end because he became infected with the virus, and the majority of the development team didn't like that, so they started work on the "Hook-man" version of RE4, which eventually became the RE4 that we all know today.

@ANGRYMAPLE but that brings us all to the question: were the old re games really scary? not really.i remmber it freaked me out, but thats all when i was 9, its all due to the zombie concept, they're scary but they're slow as hell and doesnt has a single long-range attack, to match the new online gamning market they needed new controls and more challenging enemies, what would you expect of a game were aiming is completely AIMBOT nowadays anyway? though if they include crimson heads it'd work too

why this version never came out? its AWESOME !!! even the story is better ; leon is infected by the progenitor virus and he needs to find the cure, but also he is trying to rescue sherry who was kidnapped by wesker.

I really loved this trailers, the first ones of RE 4
The final version didnt had anything to do with RE, it only got the title and Leon and Ada, the story was totally unrelated, the game was repetitive, the characters where pretty cartoony, the customization on the weapons was broken....
I loved the bosses in this game but outside that i didnt find anyhting else to like. As an action game, is nice, as an horror game, is pretty bad...as a RE game is extremelly disapointing

People need to stop whining about RE4 and RE5, saying "Zomg, it sucks so badddd!!!11! Where are mai zawmbiez?!" It's called biohazard, not zombie slayer, for a reason. Even if they're moving away from survival horror, it doesn't mean you still can't give a game a chance, instead of blindly hatting it because it's not exactly what you want it to be.

@steightst8 it's good to see that there's people that think like me, those Beta versions looks more like a Silent Hill wannabe than Resident Evil, I really liked RE4, the controls got improved, the enemies more deadly and smart and you still have some of the atmosphere of the classics, specially at the island part. And RE5, it's notable that it lost most of the horror aspect and got action instead of it, but it doesn't mean it sucks, it's a real good game but loses to RE4 in matter of atmosphere

I like this BETA version of Resident evil 4. Though, since the ending of this beta is of Leon dying, then that would be something to change. RE4 itself is okay. it's surely better than RE5. I may have not beaten RE4 yet but I know this for a fact xD

@attackman456 hehe agree completely Ashley was the most annoying, unlikable character in the whole series for me. I kept trying to leave her with the Spiv because I wanted to shoot her. Also I feel the Spiv was completely wrong for a RE game and added (unintentionally?) to making it more of a camp comedy than scary.

Ok... I guess everyone can agree this is better than the original but this game kinda defeats the objective of resident evil as it is more like a silent hill game resulting in the remaking of the game. But my point is that this game may have been awesomer and scarier but thats not the aim of resident evil. The aim is to give the player the experience of surviving a zombie invasion and maybe giving the player a scare. So think how if this game was released you'd want the other version

Acording to what it says on REwiki the plot for this is Leon infiltrating in Umbrella's headquarters in Europe and getting infected with Progenitor. Enemies looks like RE5 Uroboros if you notice

If I remember right, Leon would get injected or infected or infested with some sort of virus and as a result: experience the trippy stuff you see here...OR it's something totally different:)

@921sora yeah I'm not gonna lie, these scrapped versions look really interesting, but I'm fine with RE4 as it is. I recently replayed it on the ps2 and it was really good fun still after all these years spent in HD gaming...but yeah I would still try out the thing in the video. Maybe Capcom still has it on some kind of DVD in their offices, just like Ubisoft probably keeps their Prince of Persia Kindred Blades version somewhere around:)

Here's an interesting fact for the comments:
The voice actor for Leon, Paul Mercier; said in the Beta, Capcom planned to kill off Mr.Kennedy by the virus's power but they chose to use him later on.
However in my opion, the producers should have at least kept the game's, atmosphere. Yeah it does have a Silent Hill feel but at least release a Beta demo in a gaming magazine so you can make better judgement calls based off where the project is heading.
