@calcatchem Actually Senna was the only one in the race to have driver aids. The 1987 Lotus had active suspension which probably helped him win the GP
@calcatchem actually some computer - this is the Camel Lotus Honda 99T with active suspension which came from I do believe Volvo. It worked to a t in this race because he won it without changing tyres the whole race. They never refueled those days nor was it compulsory to pit in for tyres.
True, but Hill won his last Monaco GP in 1969 aged 40. His serious crash later in 1969 was literally career ending but he insisted on racing in the early 70's. He was 46 when he failed to qualify for the 1975 Monaco GP.
I wonder if Senna could win the Monaco GP in 2000 had he kept racing? Or even tried to qualfiy for the 2006 Monaco GP.
Respect to them both btw. I always wish Senna had won the Indy500, and some say he was going to try the 1994 race.
Does anybody have Senna's lap from Monaco 88? I ask because that one's regarded as his best ever pole. He outqualified his teammate Alain Prost by a second and a half in the same car! Unbelievable!
this lotus had active suspension, it didnt work very well it was one of the first active suspension cars williams perfected it later on before it was banned, i dunno maybe that has something to do with the smoothness??
Best driver ever? Senna would definitely be right up there, along with Colin McRae, Tazio Nuvolari, Jim Clark, Sebastien Loeb, Mario Andretti, Michael Scumacher..... Heck, why not throw in a few NASCAR legends? Not to start any hate wars on here, but you gotta consider how Johnson and Gordon handed the euros their lunch at the ROC..
Every driver has their own version of N-Ring, '57.Sebastien Loeb has shattered ever record in World Rally over the course of a few years, Mario is the only human to have won the Indy 500, Daytona 500, AND F1 championship, and Colin McRae was quite simply The Man. As for Nuvolari and Clark, Tazio beat the Auto Unions and Mercs in outdated Alfas with half the power, and Jim had 26(I think) wins, with only 2 2nd places. This shows, if his car stayed together, nobody could beat him.
100% agree with you. Part of the skill of Monte Carlo was the way drivers would launch themselves into corners inches away from barriers. Nowadays a leaner driver could probably race in Monaco.
Insane driving skills, rest in peace Ayrton. I remember you crashing, its most horrifying thing i remember.

@malfunctionalone Who cares? In 1993 he was one of a few drivers who had no driver aids. And he won 5 races and finished second in championship.

@calcatchem I love senna too.
This race was won though, thanks to Mansells retierment.
Also Sennas car did havea computer, not only engien management, but also an active suspension system. Still a phenomenal drive

@calcatchem funny you say that, as senna's lotus had an active suspension. :)

This is a proper racing car. Full on manual gearbox, active suspension, 1000 odd horsepower, and the best driver in the world taking it to the limit.
MrNinjaFish 2 years ago 5
So true, F1 should definitely still have manual gearboxes. Can't stand today's cars. Indestructible, automated..boring.
AussieDefenceForce 2 years ago
f1 is back to mnual gear box and no traction control back on slicks and tighter restrictions on aero dynamics
This seasons f1 has been one of the best for a long time

SO many people and you forgot the GREAT Juan Manuel Fangio...
KingTabor 3 years ago
I've never really been a fan of Fangio. Don't really know why.
hoosyerdaddie 3 years ago
Ok, but that doesn't mean that Fangio wasn't be a great driver.
Those drivers (except Clark and Nuvolari I think) never did or do something like Nurburgring '57...
I'm not a fan of Schumy, but I accept that he was a great driver from 2000 to his retirement.
