This girl is really good, but if you want to hear the next bluegrass prodigy in the making, check out any video by AJ Lee. I think her voice is better than Sierra Hull---she has much more power behind her. Go---check out AJ Lee. 13 yrs old now.
Actually her vocals are fine. She sings in key and on time. The problem with this video is the banjo was "mic'd" too loudly; it overwhelms Sierra's voice and the other instruments. Just one mic in front would have captured all the sound evenly - but someone at the Bluegrass Parlor got ambitious with the sound system.
Cory Walker will be a fine banjoplayer once his hormones will settle down a bit. Let's forgive him for this loud piece, he has also regreted it probably a long time ago. Not to mention Sierra Hull, she's taken most of the pounding and didn't seem to mind too much.
The Bluegrass Parlor WAS a great music store in Tampa, FL. It recently closed down with new ownership. The Bluegrass Parlor Band, which the banjo player, Cory Walker, also plays with is based on the store. Many hot pickers including Aubrey Haynie, David Crowe, and Jason Barie played in the band in the past
yeah its ashamed the parlor didn't stay in business. Dont forget about David M, David H, and Greg T, they were tight together in the late 80's. they played with Aubrey and Crowe.
The wonderful vibe I got when they were playing was dam.ened when they started singing. The vocal element leaves much to be desired. The playing was top rate, though.
I love good timing and you guys nail it. I Love BLUEGRASS. when i hear it like this it makes me freaking go crazy. Have you ever played with people that are great pickers, it like playing with them makes you a better player. Keep on you guys. Plaease check out my video" Cold sheets of rain bluegrass jam"
I dont't think so. They look like old chaps from the farm next door whom you wouldn't expect to jump out of their socks in excitement, but they do give her a decent round of applause at the end.
Something you have to realize is that in the country (speaking of the rural US) there are fantastic musicians that still just play for the fun and enjoyment of playing. We're surrounded by them, and so while they are obviously amazingly talented, it's less of a shock. Churches and community houses are full of amazing musicians that aren't in it for the fame. America's notion of "talent" is just skewed by the media.
Well put. I've found that there are many great bluegrass players around my area that just don't want to do anything to get themselves noticed. They might play in local bands, some have helped out Ralph Stanley when he passed through and theres even a guy who played pro and then just up and quit. Go figure.
@Grungydan - Couldn't agree more. When we (old time band) would play at festivals, the private musician circles or after parties would have incredible musicians, who just played for fun. We, on the other hand, seemed to get our kicks cramming into a van and traveling to other states...
Morris ,,,,,I agree. I have had the pleasure of pickin with Cory and Jarrod Walker and Sierra (When she tag's along with Cory) They are truly great musicians. I started as a young musician in Florida and have been picking for 30 years now. I'm 37 now. Cory and Jarrod Walker remind me of my younger picking years.
Sierra Hull - Mandolin, Cody Hull - Guitar, Cory Walker - Banjo, not sure on the bassist, I don't think that's their usual bassplayer but it could be.
Banjo lick at 1:27 is mind blowing!

Nothing that is that a good sound man (or woman) couldn't fix. Can't hear the guitar either.

I love Sierra Hull. Her big girl voice is around close by. She just needs to pick it up.

Very good musicians. Cory needed to back off a little but there is no questioning his talent. Sierra is great.

that boy on the banjo needs to calm down.

Why would he "calm down", the banjo makes the song what it is, and Cory is the man.
