Who else watched this on TBS back in 93 with Vampire Hunter D, Rock and Rule, Robot Carnival and American Pop? those movies ruled my world since i was 12 when i saw them all.
Indeed, if you liked this one check out Creepshow, Akira, Fire and Ice, Ninja Scroll, The Dark Crystal, Willow, Wizards, Fantastic Planet, Gandahar, Ghost in The Shell etc. for similar movies
@ejmarang You know, I've always thought the same thing; sometimes I even imagine Stern's dialogue being said in Zapp's voice (and then imagine Kif groaning after the "not guilty" part) :D
John Vernon is awesome in this movie and was terrific in animal House, Rupert Thorn on Batman animated and he was funny in Killer Klowns from Outer Space as Officer Mooney. I think the movie Trail of the Incredible Hulk was a homage to this scene.
Does anyone also remember Rock and Rule, Warriors of the Wind (the 1985 US New World butcher of Nausicaa), Twice Upon a Time and Starchaser? othr cool 80's adult animated movies most 80's kids like myself remember.
Warriors of the Wind was my childhood favorite animated movie. But did you know it was a crude edited version of Nausicaa? i didn't realize that until i saw the uncut fansub tape in high school and made myself a copy but learned to accept WOTW as i had 3 copies of the movie since childhood when i was 4 25 years ago and my parents got me the movie for christmas, i made a second copy taped off HBO and bought a used copy at 10, i even watched it on HBO anytime.
@Johnlindsey289 I didn't know about the original when I first saw WOTW, but later got to see it and became a fan of Miyazaki's other films (Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies, etc).
Same here, how old were you when you saw WOTW and Rock and Rule? I saw R&R on TBS with this movie back in 93 when i was 12 along with Vampire Hunter D, American Pop and Robot Carnival as they blew me away. Did you know James Cameron is a fan of HM and Miyazaki? he used those sources as some of his inspirations to his new movie Avatar. He did borrowed from HM including Nausicaa, Castle in The Sky, Mononoke, Dune, Star Wars, Fantastic Planet and Last of the Mohicans for the film.
I know, did you see this in theaters? one of my online friends did when he was 4 years old and told me it was the movie that got him to like girls at that age as Taarna was his first crush and even one of my friends here saw this on cable back in 83 at age 3 and left an impression on him as Taarna was his first crush.
Anyone thinks The Fifth Element and Avatar were influenced by this great movie and the comic magazine? well i do since James Cameron is a big fan of this movie and the comics. Avatar was like a full length issue and movie HM story brought to life with Sci-fi fantasy exotic looks of weird worlds and monsters, sexy alien babes with nice tits, warriors, feats of strength etc. and everything a guy with a former adolescent brain would want just like HM.
@Johnlindsey289 *chuckle* I still have a stack of the magazine laying around here somewhere. Yeah, I think it influenced a lot of people. Anime included.
After all, there were hundreds of artists involved in HM over decades of time. Some of the more popular storylines made it to this movie, but only in a superficial way.
However, the movie remains a cult classic, and Cameron is part of that cult.
But Blu-Ray and DVD makes this movie more cleaner looking. Say uh did you ever grew up on this movie? I did. And do you remember another awesome 80's adult animated Sci-fi fantasy cult fave called Warriors of the Wind (The 1985 American butchered dub of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind from New World Pictures and had Hal Smith and Cam Clarke voiced it)? that was my favorite animated movie as a kid back about 25 years ago and was the coolest one i've ever seen
Well Beowulf, Beavis and Butt Head Do America and South Park The Movie were successful in the US.
They need to make films like this, Ralph Bakshi, Akira, Starchaser or others again to prove animation is not just family stuff.
What do you think about hentai including the most infamous of all adult animation Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend? the film that spawned the whole tentacle demon porn thing.
if i was that lil blue eyeball guy you see me sitting behind him and pulling out a 9mm slowly then his would splode in the middle of the court room then id fly my ass outta there lol
Judging by those counts, sounds like Stern was a real scumbag. A downright evil man who seriously needed to be put down like some rabid dog. And he almost got it if Hanover wasn't so easy to dupe. I have to say, Stern was lucky to have escaped what would have been his gruesome execution.
I love the song that plays in this sequence of the movie. It's pretty catchy for early 80s. It wasn't until a few years later when I learned that this song was written and performed by the same band (Cheap Trick) that made the song that plays in the end credits for the 1986 movie "Top Gun".
There's another reference to Sternn, (I prefer to think of it as an homage rather than a ripoff.)Zapp Brannigan on Futurama, who they said was based on Captain Kirk. But his strutting and absurd screw-ups, attacking innocent civilizations, are very Sternn-esque. Hanover Fiste in his wimpy persona even reminds me of Kif Kroker, Brannigan's long-suffering lieutenant. Finally, to show I am a total nerd, the prosecutor in this scene reminds me of Professor Hubert Farnsworth, at least in appearance.

They should make more mature audiences only animation like this and the closet thing is Beowulf and Haunted World of El Superbeasto.
Johnlindsey289 2 years ago
In the west most people think animation is something only kids possible could enjoy.
Japan is the only country in the world were animation is more popular than live-action and is something people of all ages love.
They make more animated movies and shows for older people in Japan than for kids.
