Attending a parochial scool as I did during this time it was amazing how the church and the school dismissed Godspell and JC Superstar almost as hearsay. It took a young male lay teacher to introduce this to us and to be quite honest I dont know if I would be the churchgoer and believer I am now if I had'nt let these musical scores open my eyes.
Assistia esse filme em 1973, num lindo cinema perto da minha casa que depois virou igreja evangélica, como todos os cinemas de calçadas do Brasil e de outros países, depois que os shoppings centres passaram a fazer parte da vida dos consumidores, com a globalização.
Damn you're right. "Fucking stupid" is a good summation. This is the worst nightmare of Hippie theater - even worse than "Hair." The smugness of these so called "free" people is sickening. Who made all that stuff these schmucks are painting in the junkyard? That's right - hard working un-cool people. Frank Zappa was the only person - at the time - who saw through the ridiculous hippy haze.
@PicnicHikeMusic before you continue with your rant you might want to do some research, it is based more on the writings of theologian Harvey Cox's book "Feast of Fools" than "hippie culture"
@sgrafix, the early followers of Jesus, were early 'Christian' Jews, and would have known about the Jewish faith. I for one have had a similar upbringing and don't think God or Jesus would despise anyone from following, borrowing or singing a song from any part of the Bible or Religious texts.
ROFL hate to break it to all you Xians out there.. this is NOT a song to JC, this is FROM a Jewish prayer to GOD, no son of, brother of ... but the ONE and ONLY God.. from a prayer called "Shema" predating your dude by over a thousand years...
AND the music was written by a JEW, NOT a Xian. ..... ooops, so maybe you can start facing the truth of ONE God and NO son, no more a son than I am His daughter.

I never seen the movie...But, this song, got a hook in me back in the 70's. It is a prayer/song...Yep, this came out of my spirit after all these years. I am now an Ordained Evangelist :) You see Jesus will use any media to hook us, to keep us, and have us pray without us realizing we are doing it. In the 70's I was backslidden as a teenager... Grab a hold of this song. He will never leave you or forsake you. Peace!
The movie, the song, and the time it was released are all magical. America is so screwed up today, having gotten away from God. Today's music sucks, our government is a farce, half the country is dependent upon social programs, the imposition of Sharia Law will negate all the progress America has made. Other than that, things aren't so bad.
I remember in King of the Hill when hank and family were searching for a church and they walked into a church and this guy was singing Day by Day and they walked out
This was a commercial production which exploited the Hippie movement and religion. It fails to accurately represent either. It's a period piece that was already dated when it appeared on the big screen. Pithy songs and stereo-typical flower children were all the rage post Vietnam, when the real hippies had already put the '60s behind them, on the way to becoming Young Urban Professionals.
Um, fyi- christianity is based on obedience to a 2000 year old jewish zombie, who came down from cuckoo-cloud land to save humanity because 6000 years ago, whilst walking amongst the dinosaurs- a magical talking snake conned some chick into eating an apple.
@gels71 You're almost right. The truth of Genesis (and a lot of the 'books' in the Bible) has been lost in translation. And probably deliberately. The 'God' walking about in the garden was what would now be referred to as a missionary. An overweight man with an overfed belly. Telling people what to do and denying them wisdom. That's what the snake represents. There's 2 much 2 go into here but if there's one book in the Bible which does contain common sense it's Proverbs. Check it out.
Can somebody tell me what the name of the artist/orchestra that performed this piece in the late-60s/early-70s? It was all instrumental and it was really swingy. There were no voices.
I remember watching this in 6th grade and totally confused in a good way about the way the director portrayed Jesus and his life. I've loved it ever since.
watch the hippie pull the small plant put in the potter by the jew jesus and replace it with a big plant. this is symbolism that jesus christs miracles were frauds . the jews hate christ this shows is propanganda to turn people away from christ. the jews are corruption. if you are a christian and dont' know the truth, then Yahweh Jesus hasn't spoken to you. yes i will say that.

@MrRugbyloosehead You've got the right attitude. You're always gonna get people who because they don't get "it" feel it's their place to carp and criticise. Leave them to their own sad devices and be happy that YOU can feel happy. It's a blessing and I believe that as long as you hurt neither yourself nor anyone else you will stay blessed :)

This song's concept is the Big Three Things that EVERY Christian should be praying for EVERY DAY!!!!!!! I love this song and I love MY LORD AND SAVIOR!!!!! GOD BLESS EVERYONE AS THEY SEEK THE LORD!!!!!!!
This movie and song are breath taking. Just love it, love it, love it. Could listen to this song 24/7 everyday. Beautiful song. Makes me happy and sad all in one. My favorite musical and movie of all times.
I wasn't alive during the time that this movie came out. I was born in the later nineties, but in fact my mother was growig up while this came out. She saw it live, with my uncle, and when the movie came out on dvd my uncle bought it. A few years ago he showed me it, and we watched it again easter weekend of this year due to my request. My point is, even though I wasn't around when this came out, I still LOVE it. I'm thankful my uncle showed it to me :)
@Califman831 Shame on you. Whatever your views, your comments stand out as bile-filled and acidic. If you can't see the beauty and truth of what the song and film are saying then you don't deserve to.
One of my favorite songs: unusual given that it's really rather "thin" as songs go--little more than an extended chorus, really, without benefit of framing verse(s). Neither am I a believer, so go figure! Thanks for posting.
I also caught this on Easter Sunday. Hadn't thought about it in years. My parents had the record of the soundtrack way back when I was a kid in the 70s. I used to listen to it all the time. This was a wonderful trip down memory lane for me. I've been humming Prepare ye all day.
@wlk68 I watched it on Easter too :) I watched this movie nearly every day when I was little and haven't seen it since...it brought back great memories and almost brought me to tears because it's just so different from anything you see today.
Wonderful film. Just saw it for the first time on Easter Sunday. I don't reacall it ever being shown before on TV, I wonder why that is? It has a great gospel message.
That song Day by Day is so striking now. I never understood it from radio play before. Robin Lamont's voice was so rich.
Robin Lamont, who sings the song, became a lawyer in NYS in 1996 and, according to the IMDB, was an Ass't District Attorney in Westchester County, NY, in 2001.
@castingtherunes Nope...New York State. The State qualifies lawyers, and Westchester County is not in New York CITY. That's just where most of them work! ;)

HE'S THE SAME GOD YEASTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER!!!!!
Great song - well sung - and enjoyable show - but.... just not getting the weirdo pseudo child-like hippie vibe of the actual video. What were they going for? Some kind of early 70s idea of innocence I suppose. Still, at least it sounds good and the lyrics are wonderful.

@iwasanangryyoungman Agreed... as long as they didn't stuff it up. And how could that be done? (1) Forgetting that it's a song of love and devotion to one of history's most finest, gentlest, most wonderful beautiful people; JESUS! ... and (2)... try to make it 'hip' and 'modern' with some kind of rubbish rap sequence in the middle of it or, worse, all through it!
@angelcomet1 how old were you at the time? and to answer your question it seems that when things are most absurd is when the devil trumps in usually with a song on the radio. your not alone. it could be also some ptsd.
@angelcomet1 I can relate to you about music evoking strong memories......there are some songs that I just have to turn the station.....can't listen to because it stirs up too many bad memories...but.....on the other hand there are songs that really evoke nice memories for me as well........it's a double edged equation
i don't remember watching the whole thing but i can see the brainwash blasphemy making the son of god a hippie with a jewfro in carpenter pants what else do you need to know? don't like ? i don't like genocide.
@up2space If you were around at the time, there was a movement of hippies who were Christians. People called them Jesus Freaks. The hippie garb was used to appeal to the younger generation who maybe had given up on church as older teenagers and young adults. This also appealed to the unchurched. I never saw the movie until " 03, though I knew this song. GS brought comfort to my grieving grandsons. They smiled when we'd sing one of these from the hymnal @ church. "This is from GS, Nanna!!"
@EmpressOfWyoming58 Three (hundred) cheers to the Jesus Freaks. The Christian Church is an anvil that has worn out many hammers! Hippies have passed way out of fashion... but Christ lives on! Go, Jesus! Maranatha!
@v1e1r1g1e1 Thank you. Jesus was amazing. Is amazing. He spoke out against people who were religious snobs, the priests, the scribes and the Pharisees.
@EmpressOfWyoming58 Yeah... super cool, dude, wasn't He!? Is wasn't for nothing that they put the Christ figure in Godspell in a Superman "S" shirt.
By the way, did you know that the two guys who dreamed up Superman were Jewish? Much of the Kryptonian world's people had Jewish influenced names: Jor El, Kal El, etc. "El" is Hebrew for "god". Cool, huh?
Bascially, they were suggesting that Superman was a semi-divine being who had been sent to this planet to show us heroism and mercy. Cool

Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ

My point is, even though I wasn't around when this came out, I still LOVE it. I'm thankful my uncle showed it to me :)

@Califman831 Shame on you. Whatever your views, your comments stand out as bile-filled and acidic. If you can't see the beauty and truth of what the song and film are saying then you don't deserve to.

@Califman831 I wonder why to every video there is an asshole here on Youtube?

IowaJBS 10 months ago
love the DC Talk version of this too
ArenaBrawlTV 10 months ago
Robin Lamont, who sings the song, became a lawyer in NYS in 1996 and, according to the IMDB, was an Ass't District Attorney in Westchester County, NY, in 2001.
Talk about a change in careers!
bxbuff 10 months ago
@bxbuff NYS? You mean NYC? And that career change is amazing, though when someone becomes a lawyer, to me, it's as if they died.
castingtherunes 10 months ago
@castingtherunes Nope...New York State. The State qualifies lawyers, and Westchester County is not in New York CITY. That's just where most of them work! ;)

THANK YOU HEAVENLY FATHER FOR THE GIFT OF SONG AND PRAISE. THIS SONG SPEAKS TO MY SOUL AS YOU DO LORD!! A LADY I WORK WITH DOES NOT BELIEVE IN GOD OR HIS BLESSINGS, I CRIED WHEN SHE TOLD ME AND I ASKED GOD TO WHISPER IN HER EAR AND LET HER KNOW THAT HE IS REAL.

I'd like to hear this performed by the Glee cast! Attention Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk!!!
iwasanangryyoungman 1 year ago

@up2space What?
bengarrion 1 year ago
@up2space If you were around at the time, there was a movement of hippies who were Christians. People called them Jesus Freaks. The hippie garb was used to appeal to the younger generation who maybe had given up on church as older teenagers and young adults. This also appealed to the unchurched. I never saw the movie until " 03, though I knew this song. GS brought comfort to my grieving grandsons. They smiled when we'd sing one of these from the hymnal @ church. "This is from GS, Nanna!!"
EmpressOfWyoming58 1 year ago
@EmpressOfWyoming58 Three (hundred) cheers to the Jesus Freaks. The Christian Church is an anvil that has worn out many hammers! Hippies have passed way out of fashion... but Christ lives on! Go, Jesus! Maranatha!
v1e1r1g1e1 1 year ago
@v1e1r1g1e1 Thank you. Jesus was amazing. Is amazing. He spoke out against people who were religious snobs, the priests, the scribes and the Pharisees.
EmpressOfWyoming58 1 year ago
@EmpressOfWyoming58 Yeah... super cool, dude, wasn't He!? Is wasn't for nothing that they put the Christ figure in Godspell in a Superman "S" shirt.
By the way, did you know that the two guys who dreamed up Superman were Jewish? Much of the Kryptonian world's people had Jewish influenced names: Jor El, Kal El, etc. "El" is Hebrew for "god". Cool, huh?
Bascially, they were suggesting that Superman was a semi-divine being who had been sent to this planet to show us heroism and mercy. Cool
