what i find funny is when women define themselves as non-feminists, yet there they are, living the life their great grandmothers fought to earn. all women are feminists if they accept that the law allows them to be 'equal.' plus the term of feminism is means to accept that women are equal to men. so it also works vice versa: men are equal to women.

My issue with what andrea and the other intern/woman said about feminism is that they basically are adhering to what the stereotype of what it means to be a feminist. Why is it that because you view yourself as a "girly girl" you cant be a feminist? It just seems that more education needs to be done, on a global scale, about what exactly a feminist is and how to embrace this term and ardently fight against the negative press. Also, Shannon, are you more of a feminist or womanist?

Feminism is a product of the modern society. There used to be a distinct division between male and female responsibilities and, as a result, - their rights. When male's role is to build house, hunt and protect, it's only logical that female role is a housewife. Today, when males live miserable life as office clerks, etc... the difference between males and females becomes less and less visible, and, if female earns more money - no wonder she wants to have a leading position

so when minorities, everyone else, say they're not feminist, it irks me because they do not understand what exactly feminism is and its obvious the name/title is misleading with horrible connotation.

I actually Just started my youtube channel today & am an officer of an organization that is called I Am That Girl in Orlando, FL & hell yes I am a feminist.

It has a negative connotation because it is just one more way women and their efforts for equality have been degraded. No doubt here are extremes, but EVERY WOMAN should be a feminist! Society has put this role of submission & passivity on us and that's not always how it is or should be. To each her own, but feminism = a beautiful thing:)

Women play a equal role as men do in this regard: Women are human they think, feel, urge and are a counterpart to men. Women are not made the same in proportion to men's mass. Women are the ones that give birth, That doesnt mean that women shouldnt have the right. The right to be successful, the right to contribute to society, the right to dream. Their are things that men are built to do and their are things that women are built to do. There are things that do not have to be gender related.

i think in countries that are "free" (ex..america, europe, etc..) women have everything that they need and want but in thirld world countries or very "strict" countries (ex...some middle east, africa..etc) woment still might need more feminists

Being a feminist isn't only about fighting. Its about how you live your every day life and the type of mentality you have. However, I feel that the only people who deserve to claim the word "Feminist" are those who are actively dedicating their time for such a cause whether it be protesting at the white house, organizing women oriented gatherings, blogging, ensuring safe and fair working conditions at the workplace, ect. and whatever it may be.

Well I support the feminist thought, I believe myself to be more concerned and organized when it comes to myself and my female friends and family members as a female in this society but I am definitely not a feminist. I am not out there fighting actively to serve a purpose, I am not out there dedicating my life to the safety and concern of women, I am not out there dedicating 20 hours of my life trying to get an issue pressed. I don't believe I am a feminist but being a woman does not makes my needs or wants second to that of a man. I believe woman or man should be independent and not dependent on another human being for survival. In a relationship or life, man and woman are equal but that equality does not mean 50/50 it means sometimes we each bring our strenghts and weaknesses in a relationship. I don't plan on staying home when married b/c I prefer working and some stay home b/c they prefer housewife duties.

I'm not a feminist but I do have feminist tendencies I suppose. I do believe that some of what we as women have to deal with today is a result of the "movement" however its not all bad. I'm for things like pro choice but on the other hand I feel like we can't get mad if a man hoots n hollers at you b/c a clothing choice. Disrespectful yes, but expected. I'm old fashion with a modern twist I feel I'm in the gray area too.

The problem w this video & this period in time is that the definition of feminist isn't clear. Its been softened to mean you like other females, they have the right to chose, work and vote. So what. i agree with ur first sentence, today the definitiion isnt clear, and i also feel that once youve fall under that category our very patriarchal society kind of labels you as a "man hater." But i dont agree on your argument that one can only proclaim to be a feminist and be respected as a feminist only 40yrs into her life, in other words through her experience. Experienece doesnt have a time limit, therefore being a woman in the 1970's is very different from being a woman in 2009!

Also, movements have a time and place in which they are most effective. Once that time has passed & sicnificant strides have been made, it is time to regroup, define,organize and set new goals based on the issues you gen is facing.
