to think people who lived near raf bases new what the sound was. but i wonder wot it would have sounded like with formation taking off the sound is just incredible
Yep totally agree. Goose pimple time. Brings back memories of seeing it for the last time at church Fenton 92.'
Brilliant watching it fly at displays, imagine a full squadron of these loaded with blue steel nuclear missiles on their way to the USSR. Frightening. Luckily it never got that far
She has the most amazing, haunting howl! Brings tears to my eyes with overwhelming emotions when I heard this take off howl! Seen her flying this summer over Windermere, my spine shuddered and my heart took off with her! I am going to see her next Tuesday at her hangar in Doncaster; why oh why is she not protected as a national treasure? The Vulcan to the Sky Trust should not have to struggle to keep this amazing bird in the skies for us all to marvel and treasure and thank for out freedom....
The AV Roe Vulcan should be made a national treasure ........ like the Crown Jewels or Man Utd or some thing ........ why should the trust struggle to keep it alive ?? The BOBMF gets loads of funding , this bird meant we aint speaking Russian or living in a nuclear waste land !!!!! Valiant , Victors need the same protection imho
Sorry bazadata, no afterburners were ever fitted to Vulcans, there was no room in the airframe for them. Only Concorde and the TSR2 had afterburning Olympus engines.

My fondest memory of a Vulcan:) Church Fenton. The pilot flew it overhead with the bomb bay doors open then lit the afterburner. Thousands of car alarms were making cars jump about in the grassy car park.
@bazadata afterburner ??? not on a vulcan. in the 60's one vulcan had a rr olympus test engine with reheat for the concorde tests. but what a noise 100% pure static thrust :)
@loudness96 4x Bristol Olympus turbojets. Those engines, through Rolls Royce, was further developed, afterburners were added. Eventually a much later (and much more powerful) version powered the Concorde.
@muddiford Correct. That wasn't until Rolls-Royce and Snecma started fiddling with the TSR-2 powerplant. There was also a marine version fitted to quite a number of warships, used in the same field as the GE LM2500.
On the 7th day God created the Vulcan. Absolute gift masterpiece of human engineering designing. One of my 5 favorite Aircraft I have seen on take off. The Concorde,B1 Lancer,F-4 Phantom,F-14 Tomcat, and RAF Tornado were the others.
By christ!! That has to be one of the best man made noises ever!! That howl would make anyone surrender BEFORE she'd dropped a bloody bomb. god bless her long may she continue to fly.
@jabberwocky1974 I was there. I just crossed the bridge. If you type this in (avro vulcan XH558 low fly past) you can see my view. I'm still speechless and so hooked on this plane now. I only found out about it in '08, just before Farnbororough and saw it there also. Now I know what the fuss is about. Just astonishing.
went on a hangar tour at RAF Lyneham on sunday to see XH558, what an amazing aircraft, to actually see an airworthy Vulcan and walk around and under her and simply be in her presence was truly humbling and a day i will never forget. to stand on the ladder looking up into the cockpit was truly awesome and an absolute honour. there cant be many people who have done that on XH558.

Not quite, the Vulcan howl comes from the engine intakes, only at 96% or more power, its caused by air resonating inside the intakes. The blue note made by hunters, same sore of thing but only happens at high speeds and this time is caused by the gun ports.

Good vid ..out of the top drawer !! Ps Lets hope the residents of carterton like it.... could increase house prices !!
