  • to think people who lived near raf bases new what the sound was. but i wonder wot it would have sounded like with formation taking off the sound is just incredible

  • What a BUZZ! LOVE that howl!

  • Damn that was probably the most amazing howl I've heard :D more more more I love this aircraft that noise makes me shiver all over

  • Guh, that howl made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on edge...amazing.

  • Yep totally agree. Goose pimple time. Brings back memories of seeing it for the last time at church Fenton 92.'

Brilliant watching it fly at displays, imagine a full squadron of these loaded with blue steel nuclear missiles on their way to the USSR. Frightening. Luckily it never got that far

  • Brilliant, just brilliant. Every time I hear that Vulcan howl the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

  • She has the most amazing, haunting howl! Brings tears to my eyes with overwhelming emotions when I heard this take off howl! Seen her flying this summer over Windermere, my spine shuddered and my heart took off with her! I am going to see her next Tuesday at her hangar in Doncaster; why oh why is she not protected as a national treasure? The Vulcan to the Sky Trust should not have to struggle to keep this amazing bird in the skies for us all to marvel and treasure and thank for out freedom....

  • cheers for that Jeff, superb, what a sound, awesome!

  • nice prolomged howl!

  • @imrathertall they most probably babbed themselves

  • That is up there in the top 5 howlers.

  • Id love to know what the Argentinians thought seeing this come over, its not a small bomber lol!

  • Without doubt the best Vulcan howl I've ever heard!! Brilliant video!!

  • Ah...good old 'Us and them' bomber. What a sound !

  • The AV Roe Vulcan should be made a national treasure ........ like the Crown Jewels or Man Utd or some thing ........ why should the trust struggle to keep it alive ?? The BOBMF gets loads of funding , this bird meant we aint speaking Russian or living in a nuclear waste land !!!!! Valiant , Victors need the same protection imho

  • If those Martian tripods had heard this thing firing up they would have got back in their hole!

  • Sorry bazadata, no afterburners were ever fitted to Vulcans, there was no room in the airframe for them. Only Concorde and the TSR2 had afterburning Olympus engines.

  • Sorry bazadata, no afterburners were ever fitted to Vulcans, there was no room in the airframe for them. Only Concorde and the TSR2 had afterburning Olympus engines.

  • My fondest memory of a Vulcan:) Church Fenton. The pilot flew it overhead with the bomb bay doors open then lit the afterburner. Thousands of car alarms were making cars jump about in the grassy car park.

  • @bazadata afterburner ??? not on a vulcan. in the 60's one vulcan had a rr olympus test engine with reheat for the concorde tests. but what a noise 100% pure static thrust :)

  • and those babes had nuke war head when required be afraid i am love em !!

  • one of the best sounds on the planet it just beats the c-5 whine by a bit

  • They should have bombed Osama Bin Laden with this thing. The noise would have scared him to death!

  • Awesome...

Loved to see the Vulcan at RAF Church Fenton displays ....

  • i've paid for that :)

  • a tear comes to my eyes. .............

  • @stevesroom

    Yes me too !.

  • Wow !!!

  • OMG! What is the powerplant of this machine? Rolls Royce?

  • @loudness96 4x Bristol Olympus turbojets. Those engines, through Rolls Royce, was further developed, afterburners were added. Eventually a much later (and much more powerful) version powered the Concorde.

  • @McTaff350 Great video and great jet scream. Thanks for informations.

  • @McTaff350 There were never afterburners fitted to the Vulcan though. Not on any version.

  • @McTaff350

There were never afterburners fitted to the Vulcans though, on any model.

  • @muddiford Correct. That wasn't until Rolls-Royce and Snecma started fiddling with the TSR-2 powerplant. There was also a marine version fitted to quite a number of warships, used in the same field as the GE LM2500.

  • That is the sound of God screaming

  • Beauty, majesty and brutality, all rolled into on unique ear-splitting package. Thankyou, Avro.

  • would be better if the woman didn't talk over it

  • Forgot to mention the C-130 Hercules JATO Demo close up first seen back in the early 1970's. Best JATO Demo ever.

  • On the 7th day God created the Vulcan. Absolute gift masterpiece of human engineering designing. One of my 5 favorite Aircraft I have seen on take off. The Concorde,B1 Lancer,F-4 Phantom,F-14 Tomcat, and RAF Tornado were the others.

  • God I love that noise!! Roll on the airshow season 2011!! Long may XH558 fly!

  • Trust us brits to make so much noise

  • One of the most beautiful aircraft ever made...

  • Thts what I call a proper aeroplane

  • My lifelong engineering ambition is make a hairdryer make that noise.

  • @dienkonig33 LOL - You're going to have a hard job making an hair-dryer make a sound like that! (let me know if you suceed though)?

  • By christ!! That has to be one of the best man made noises ever!! That howl would make anyone surrender BEFORE she'd dropped a bloody bomb. god bless her long may she continue to fly.

  • Long before the B-1...there was the Vulcan!

  • Chilling.

  • Sounds like communist death.

  • you can hear those engines from my house there was a squadron of vulcans at wyton and wyton is a good 8 miles from me!

  • Xh558 flew over northampton twice on sat 3rd july and displayed at FOS Goodwood on sun 4th july, fantastic to see he flying again this year.

  • @jabberwocky1974 I was there. I just crossed the bridge. If you type this in (avro vulcan XH558 low fly past) you can see my view. I'm still speechless and so hooked on this plane now. I only found out about it in '08, just before Farnbororough and saw it there also. Now I know what the fuss is about. Just astonishing.

  • LATEST NEWS 1 JULY :- Herculean efforts continue to ready Vulcan XH558 for RAF Waddington Airshow!!!!

  • Sounds like it is going to deliver Death!! ..

What an awesome blood curdling sound!

  • went on a hangar tour at RAF Lyneham on sunday to see XH558, what an amazing aircraft, to actually see an airworthy Vulcan and walk around and under her and simply be in her presence was truly humbling and a day i will never forget. to stand on the ladder looking up into the cockpit was truly awesome and an absolute honour. there cant be many people who have done that on XH558.

  • Not quite, the Vulcan howl comes from the engine intakes, only at 96% or more power, its caused by air resonating inside the intakes. The blue note made by hunters, same sore of thing but only happens at high speeds and this time is caused by the gun ports.

  • i think there are other RAF jets that have a similar sound and i think its known as the "blue note"

  • Fantastic that howl never fails to give me goosebumps. She always gets me emotional whenever I see her fly video or realtime. Great post thanks

  • that was 1 of the best howls i have heard

  • Whoooo hoooooo!!!!!!!! There's no other sound like that, it really gives you goose bumps!! Very well captured.

  • Brings tears to my eyes hearing that noise, amazing!

  • Brilliant video and awesome sound.Great to hear the howl again.Had a close up tour of XH558 at Fairford this year.Last saw her on the farewell tour at Finningley in the 90s. So great to see and hear her airbourne again!Mt faviyrute aircraft.

  • Glad you and your mother got the full Vulcan Effect, courtesy of Dr. Pleming & co .

    All power to Team Vulcan.~Rgds,

    KPM

  • Scary howl, almost like the sound the alien ships in the "War Of The Worlds" film with Tom Cruise.

  • Reminds me of the takeoff at fairford 1989

look it up on youtube -Vulcan vs B52

  • Yep first class howl.

We are so lucky to have this areoplane and videos like this to share. The HD recorders seam to mute the howl compared to old recorders, the old recorings i have back form 1992 are much like yours. Good vid ..out of the top drawer !! Ps Lets hope the residents of carterton like it.... could increase house prices !!
