@MultiHornguy Actually the M5 is correct for a Western Pacific passenger F (except for a few F3's that kept their A-200's and one other FP7 that had a rare horn).
The sad thing is that the FP9 in the video was probably in much better condition after years of work on Via than were the F7's and F3's in used when Western Pacific still ran the CZ!!
Maybe when it was with VIA, but not from what I understand when this video was shot. A couple friends of mine were working in the engine (Amtrak engine crew) and described the condition of that engine to me.
Smoked like a sun of a gun for miles, even in the cab until we blew out the cob webs, wheel profile sucked so the trucks were constantly hunting, speedometer jumped all over above 70mph, oil leaking all over engine room, the list goes on even more.
@danosf That engine was a tired beast. Rough riding due to the trucks being worn out and the wheel contour was flat. Smoked for about 10 minutes because all it ever did was idle or lightly work before we got it and gave it a proper work out. What was fun was the overspeed was still set for 90mph and we did get it up there a couple times before the ground relay kicked.
I know that Santa Fe's F's had 100+ MPH gearing and Canadian passenger F's (like the one in the video) were good for 90. I'm just asking how fast THIS train was going in the first scene.
Just my personal preference but I always preferred cab units without the ocillating (sp) light in the upper headlight casting. With the stationary headlight in the nose door to me it totally changes the appearance of the unit. To me it looks more "pure" with just the top headlight or even if the ocillating light was in the nose door instead of the upper casting. Again just my personal preference.
Two headlights were more commonly used on passenger f-units. WP passenger f-units had 2 headlights - freight units had one - so from a purist standpoint... Of course the ditch lights ruin the whole effect anyway.
WICKED!!!

The M-5 horn when approaching at speed sounds just like a K-5LA when it's going away from you at speed. Notice that?
nyshortline 7 months ago
Is that a Streamliner?

now VIA only has 6300 FP9ARM only used as a switcher in vancouver BC

I know that the M5 is the standard horn, but shouldn't it have a Leslie A-200

@danosf This is my new channel. Yah, I thought that there wasn't a difference between passenger and freight at the time.

@trainboy94 Thank you, Bob Packer of Colorado tuned it for me. Still sounds good today.

Can anyone estimate the speed of the train in the first scene? I figure 70 MPH.
RDG484 3 years ago
According to a website I was once on, the EMD F-Series goes up to 100 mph, bear in mind that I am British, not American.

Oh, I'd say about 70 mph.

Yeah that's what I figure, too.

I've just found out that the locomotive pulling the CZ is in fact Western Pacific 805-A that is an EMD FP7, check on Wikipedia if you doubt me.
johnnytheidiotengine 3 years ago
I mean, this story reminds me of Super Rescue from Enterprising Engines, Henry is the red diesel and California Zephyr is D199.

mikokat 4 years ago
It was run as an Amtrak special, and Amtrak rules require all Amtrak trains to have at least one Amtrak locomotive and at least one Amtrak car.
Gee, you'd think I was getting paid every time I used the word Amtrak.
mafarnz 4 years ago
Haha. I was joking. I know it was an Amtrak special.

No. That was a cabless booster.

Yes.
Type "Carolina Southern" on YouTube to see videos of
it.

The EA, E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, and E6 have what they call a "Slant-nose". The E7, E8, and E9 have what they call a "Bulldog nose".
Yes, the F's were built in higher numbers.
2GUNBOY 4 years ago
It depends on what kind of E-unit you are talking about:
the EA, E1, and E2 have 1,800hp. The E3, E4, E5, E6, and the E7 have 2,000hp. The E8 has 2,250hp. and the E9 (the most powerful E-unit) has 2400hp.
The E-units have an "A1A-A1A" wheel configuration, which means that they have one power axle, one idler axle, and one more power axle per truck.
The FT, and F2 have 1350hp. The F3, F7, and the FP7 have 1500hp. The F9, FP9, and the FL9 have 1750hp(later FL9's had 1800hp).
2GUNBOY 4 years ago
how often does this train run? i have never seen it before and i go on that line almost every week
maxphilp 4 years ago
E units were built for passenger service, I don't think any railroads used them (or use them now) for freight work.
wn676 4 years ago
Sometimes they used them on fast freight trains.
2GUNBOY 4 years ago
If you are talking about F-units, I don't think so. Most that are left are used for excursions and dinner trains.
danosf 4 years ago
The Carolina Southern Railroad still uses a
Canadian National F9B.

Is that horn original to the loco? It sounds exactly like what WP used.
Nice vid. Wish I was on that train!
mafarnz 5 years ago
Although the unit is originally a ex-CN unit, that is indeed a Nathan M5.
Miketherailfan 5 years ago
The horn belongs to Brian Wilson, one of the engineers on that trip. Same type as WP used on the CZ (M5).
