What is the best voltage to run this amp at? I have a 52 amp variable power supply that runs my Texas Star 350. I run it at 13.8 volts. Should I be running it at just 12 volts or should I turn up the voltage on my power supply
@BananaJSSI bring the voltage up to about 14 because once you start talking the draw is on and everything comes down. an under powered amp sounds bad and leads to more problems
@MrAlabamaOutdoorsman All you have to make sure is you hook it up strait to the battery and you have a big gauge wire going to the amp and battery. You will have to turn your radios gane and power down so you don't blow the pills. If you have a radio that is peeked and tuned then you need too buy a high drive amp.The coax connection are marked so you know which go to the amp and out of the antenna.
@truckstopcowboy You will need a three foot jumper coax and make sure your SWR are 1.5 or lower. Most of this info is on you tube or go to the amp web sites.
@JettaJ1 they only make 250hdv, the old one use to be called the killer bee which took low power input. this one, the hdv means high drive variable. the variable refering to power output via knob
@fordbroncodave i just bought a Texas star DX250 it has 2x 2290s in it. its about 250w on AM.....im sure a 2w dead key swinging to 20w is reasonable with a dx250. i know the HDV models can take a hard hit on swing my guess is the drivers inside the amp are different.....
Ok cool, one more question. I have a wilson antenna that can handle 300 wats and i found a 260 watt amp would this be too much? And whats the the difference between rms output and pep output?
@TheDude8689 any wilson antenna will take the load, a wilson 2000 will take 5,000 watts, and a wilson 5000 will take 10,000 and then some before it melts. make absolutely sure you have a heavy well grounded antenna or you will have problems. pep is (peak envelope power) absolute maximum output on a high note like a whistle. rms is your standard talk reading on the meter.
Sweet 16's yea buddy them are the best! I had one, and they stold it thinking it was the monoblock amp for bass.. Took it with my subs.. grr love to see them hook that to the subs.. I miss her dearly
This is a 180 watts PEP amp. No way will it do almost double of what the transistors are rated.
The HDV means high drive variable. The HD sticker actually really means nothing it just sells more amps.
These types of transistor configurations run well with 2 watts of dead key and 20 watts of swing. A little more a little less no biggy but keep it cool. Great amp for your basic cobra 29, 148, and Uniden cb radios. Not the best choice for your hi power exports like RCI's, RF Limited, and Strykers.
i just found that texas star KILLER BEES amp. DX 250 HDV at a yard sale today along with a cobra29 nw st soundtracker 40 channel cb missing the mike all for 30.00
@veggiepowered Thats one hell of a deal, I just bought a Cobra 2000 GTL for 20.00 at a garage sale.I`m looking to purchase a good base antenna now.Always looking for the good deal!!
Why is it called Hi Drive? what kind of pills? is it cooled? how much does it weigh? what are it's dimensions? how do you go from ssb to AM? Do the review Man! Do the review!
i'll just sum it up right here. hi drive means it takes more watts to run it (20+ watts maybe more for ssb). 2 X 2290 toshiba pills. no it is not cooled. just has aluminum fins on the bottom. weighs about 2 pounds. the dimensions are about the size of 2 cobra 29's stacked on top of eachother. there is a swich on the rear of the unit that switches from AM to SSB. i sold the amp but i do remember alot about it. -dave
hey im just starting out but i want an amp can anyone help me out with finding a cheap powerful and small little amp that is already setup and ready to go for my Cb. its a ranger and i just want an amp that i can just hook up and go 'cause i dont know how to do all the "mods" like you guys :) any advice?

@JettaJ1 the swr meter or the amp? swr meter is a power scanner astatic 700

Did the meter light blow out when he turned it on?
brandoncharleswilson 1 year ago
@brandoncharleswilson no, it is part of the talk modulation circuit so it turns on when the mic is keyed and shuts off when it is unkeyed
