  • wow, what a great way to put on fletching. didn't really understand the loop business for securing the end, but i will watch it again. my first arrows aren't so hot, so thanks i think i'll try it your way.

  • you my friend, are amazing. your flights on your dart came out perfect. Mine looked so mangled, haha. I am guessing it gets easier with every dart. I had to use fishing line, I couldn't find the artificial sinew to save my life. Where do you get yours? Thanks for posting all these great videos, lots more projects for me to try!

  • Crazy crow (dot) com has turkey feathers

  • You can get natural, undyed turkey feathers from Indian craft supply catalogs probably for a let less money that archery supply shops.

  • can any one tell me where i can find wood for darts?

  • nice method! Works good for me.thnks

  • how long our your feathers on your darts in inches ?

  • what kind of feathers did you use

  • Full length turkey feathers (dyed black by the "manufacturer"). I get them from on-line archery supply shops.

  • @Paleoaleo will this work with primitive arrows?

  • thats funny at the end

  • thats cool

  • show a photo or it didn't happened! :D

  • Awesome straight forward clear instruction... good job!

  • this is an amazing meathod but i do have to wonder, y do u bend it over and not just wrap the sinew around the feather straight?

  • Thanks for the comment. I guess he doesnt answer his own. To many videos to reply to.

  • Are the feathers macaw parrot ? I tried turkey feathers but they came from the right wing and were very hard to get to stay striaght on the shaft? That is why I am asking what feathers they were? Joesph (fly) Thomas Brendel III (fly2000jtb) youtube name Thanks for any reply.

  • @fly2000jtb: Maybe he got them from AronRa? I think those are goose primaries. Looks like a lot of the basic techniques are similar to flytying? Go figure.

  • I guess he has to many videos to reply to huh? That is why he doesnt answer his comments.

  • @fly2000jtb: LOL, he's got a few. This time of the year is also a big field season, so he may or may not be working on perfecting his craft. So, what did you finally try? Goose? Or maybe, turkey tail? I'd like to get more involved in the primitve arts, but a technological lifestyle seems to eat all that up. I think I'd be happier just sitting under a tree, chipping flint, watching the horse and mammoth amble by. Ah me. Pleistocence Park anyone?

  • I got some macaw feathers, they worked pretty well. Some lady in FL was selling them on ebay. Her bird is real old and she wants to see the darts when I am done with them. I have three ready, the first one looks like it was shot a hundred times!! (Not real good at it yet hahahha) Hope you get the chance soon its fun, Joseph T (fly2000jtb)

  • where did u get the feathers and the fake simew from?

  • Comment removed

  • I used hide glue and real sinew on my first 4 darts....what a mess! I'm going to use your glueless method with artificial sinew next time. Thanks again for sharing....jim

  • whats the size of artificial sinew that you use? Do you use the same size of string for the other parts of the dart that you make as well?

    thanks =]

  • For fletching, I use a regular size of artificial sinew, but I strip it down into thinner pieces. Usually 3 pieces out of a whole one. It makes for a cleaner look that way. Tom

  • Alright NICE advice thankyou Tom. damn if only you knew how much your vids have inspired me haha. I'm already anticipating summer.

I live in utah, i spend most my time outdoors. Graduated last year from highschool - just trying to find myself still & youve helped me a bit in remembering my life long passion which is archaeology/anthropology heh.

Just rock hunting all around this state and finding indian burials - man.. life has so much to offer. Stuff like this is my passion!

    THX for posting!

  • This is awesome thanks so much for sharing!

I had planned on making a fletching video last yr but never got to it... your technique is much better than mine though, looks alot more secure.

I do much better with visual aids. Thanks again.

  • Thanks for watching and for the nice comment.

  • from one tom mills to another, your vids are brilliant

  • Maybe we're related! Sorry for my delayed reply! I'm a slacker when it comes to checking these messages!

  • maybe lol it wouldnt surprize me, i seem to have family all over the place

  • Wow, great video! I always learn something new every time I watch one of your videos.I'm only 16, but ever since I was about 6 years old I've always been intrigued by primitive weapons. If you have any more tips or projects, please post them! Thanks

  • awesome

  • what kind of knot do you use?

  • Tom, thanks a lot! I love these kinds of projects, and I've learned a great deal from this series. Please do film some more of your ideas, and I'll be checking into Paleoworld too!

  • what feathers are they?

  • hey this is a realy good idea! im gonna try this this week. but uh what do u kill to get the feathers? or do u buy em?

  • I use turkey feathers. I buy them from archery supply shops.

  • hmm. ill check with my archery shop. hey do u know if crow feathers are good to use??

  • Yea, crow feathers are great. They look cool too.

  • Thanks folks. It's good to know that someone out there finds something useful in these videos! I have some ideas for new ones...just have to get off my butt and make them. Tom

  • This was a big help! Very thorough, well done and you made it look easy. I just might give it a shot. Thanks Tom.

  • very cool tom, i think ill try this method when im fletching some arrows and if i can find some long enough dowels ill try making an atlatl to :P

  • This was very cool. Ya know, in this story I'm writing (and which may never be finished; that's how my stories go), there is an important character who uses an atlatl. I had thought that it would only be interesting to show her using it, but now I'm thinking I could include scenes of her fletching the dart, knapping the point, and even carving the atlatl itself.

  • Thanks fellas. I don't know what I'm worse at doing...filming, editing, or "acting"! Video is definitely a good way to share this kind of info though, eh? Tom

  • Great fletching video tom, voice over is great! info is great! you da man!
