Does anyone know about P.J. PROBY????? if you do, i want to ask questions about how 3 WEEK HERO came about, featuring Zeps whole lineup as the backing band. Released on April 8, 1969
@Rareenergy I think JPJ was going to do one last bit of session work, and he brought in the rest of the band with him. They weren't on all of the songs, but they were together on "Jim's Blues". I don't know the details of the rest of the album. (JPJ was the only bassist involved, but there were other guitarists, keyboardists, drummers, and percussionists.)
Bonham got a slow hand clap.I guess if your not a drummer you don't realize what you are witnessing! what a lucky group of people. I would love to have this show recorded through a bored in HD.
Up until 1971 is when they rocked. Afterward they started losing steam. I wish I could have seen these early shows, wow! All in shape too, not thin or bloated.
@RevrendJohnson no, 1971 is way to early. 1975/6 is a whole lot better date in my opinion. between 71 and 76 they release houses of the holy and physical grafitti, both OUTSTANDING albums.
although i agree that zeppelin were better in their earlier years, i have to disagree. i reckon they were at their absolute peak in 1972. i base that on the "how the west was won" live album which is simply amazing, if you haven't checked it out, you really should. that performance was so good that i can barely listen to the original recordings anymore. also the 73 msg concert was also out of this world.
@sticksbangskins Absolutely agreed. It seemed like John Bonham turned into this super-human.. "Thing", in Moby Dick. And Dazed And Confused? Oh my goodness. Yes, it was their best year. Even Jimmy Page says the same.
4:50 is beyond me. It sounds like a bunch of pull-offs, since Jimmy never delved into tapping, but...I don't get how it's pulled off so fluidly with heavy fuzz...
@Ozzybeans I wouldn't say he never delved into tapping. He did plenty of tapping. Not quite as much as Jeff Beck did/does, but still enough to say he definitely got some use out of that technique. Van Halen said he was inspired to develop his tapping technique after going to a Led Zeppelin concert, specifically after seeing ''Heartbreaker" performed live. Page used it more for little bits of showmanship here and there, which was how tapping was usually used back then.
Rare! Only their 3rd American concert. The band had been in existence for about 4 months by this point. The day after this show, all four band members nearly met an early end during a traumatic car ride from Spokane to Portland, OR, because of the terrible snowy weather.
who ever recorded this was really lucky, Peter Grant and Richard Cole would find bootleggers and pull them backstage and beat them then smash their gear.
Yeah, Peter had a temper, a little too much if you ask me, but he was great at intimidating people and protecting his band! Did you hear about what he did to Terry Knight, manager of Grand Funk Railroad? GFR were a real kickass band when they started, real funky high energy. They opened for Zep at the start of their fall U.S. tour in '69 and Peter saw how GFR was getting the audience whipped up into a frenzy. Peter pulled Terry up by his collar and told him to pull GFR from the stage!
or how about when the 2 drunk sailors were messing with robert and jimmy and peter grabbed both of them by their collars and told them, wat's you problem, popeye
That must've been something Knerdzilla! My mom loved Zeppelin when they first hit the scene but they were one of the bands she never saw live! It was such a great time for rock! So many bands comming out with great stuff all at once, enough to make your head spin. What were you dad's thoughts apon first seeing this brand, spanking new band?!
Robert's voice was so incredible earlier on. I wonder if he just sang his vocal chords to smithereens or he smoked them dry or a bunch of both, but damn he had some pipes in 68. Holy shit.
I agree, Robert was untouchable in the early days. I know he had throat surgery some time in the 70's because of throat pollips or something, that probably had something to do with it. But I wouldn't doubt that he also overused his abilities. I mean you can only scream that high for so long. I know some singers like Steven Tyler can still hit the highs after so long, but Steven never came close to Robert, and that's where the difference is.
By March 1973, Robert's voice was affected by the fact that he caught the flu, and was a heavy smoker, and he never to this day has recovered that incredible soprano-like voice. If you listen to "Song Remains the Same" movie and soundtrack, you'll notice that he doesn't hit the high notes in "Over the Hills" like he did live in '72 (How the West was Won")
Hi all would anyone of heard of a version of how many more times real early had on tape years ago lent to some1 and never got back gutted 22 years later can not find . it was live performance and they were about to play this track how many more times when jimmy snaps a guitar string ba bababa ba so rob say its about time i introduce you to the band ba bababa ba . ba ba ba ba . and by the time he gets around to jimmys name new string has been replaced and let absolute rip . please help ty
@kyuii I know! It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard a male human voice do. The single most amazing thing. I want to do that, but sadly, I am a human, not a Golden God. I can only hit the other notes.
My older brother was at Gonzaga University & had a press pass from school for this show. He got to interview Page & Plant. Soon after he wrote me a letter with his scribbled drawing of the Hindenberg crash. He said I better buy this record when it comes out. He also said he invited them to come over for dinner at my folks Bay Area home when they played the Fillmore in San Francisco later on... I guess they had better things to do than meet the family LOL.
You know, even with the sound quality of a bootleg recording, Led Zeppelin still delivers. The mark of a good band is that you could hear them through soup can speakers and still get off on it.
The first time I heard this song,I had never heard anything like it. it was like crack from then on ,i could never get enough. If i was a teenager in the late 60's early 70's there is no doubt i would have traveled everywhere the band went.
you can see how jimmy plays that part of the solo exactly on the zeppelin danish tv appearance of 1969 which was released on the led zeppelin dvd. its in black and white.
