That's one of the best and most comprehensive review I have ever seen .... the information was concise and very relevant... Excellent job and well done.
Thanks for the great review. I have an FZ28 and I am looking to upgrade. I am glad they have added a better microphone since the one on the FZ28 sucks big time!
Great review on Panasonic DMC-FZ35. The camera is impressive. The video is so correct about finding the best digital camera being subjective. There are websites that can help with finding a digital camera to meet ones photography needs. The site that I have found to be helpful has been digital camera ratings dot net. The site divides the camera levels into beginner, amateur and professional level cameras. It certainly helped me.
Great review and this has helped me out loads on deciding what camera i should get, could you please answer a question for me and tell me is the Lumax FZ45 a newer version of the FZ 35/38?? as i want a good camera to do some videos of my RC flights. thanks in advanced for any info or help also i'll check out your website to see if you have any reviews of the FZ45 = thumbs up.
@telorinodelhoyoo So didn't watch this review all the way through then because if you watch at 6.53 onwards you will hear him say you can zoom while recording plus what camera do you think he was using for this review? because it is the Lumix FZ 35/FZ 38 and from 6.53 he is using it to do the videoing and he is zooming in and out ;-) hope this helps you change your mind as it can zoom while recording.
I really want this camera, but I was wondering, can you focus the image/video yourself, with like a focus wheel, or do you have to attach a lens if you want to do that? I'm not really a camera expert, so sorry if I sound stupid. Hopefully you understand what I mean :)
@SchussFilms men that's not stupid that's a pretty smart question and yes there is a feature called Joystick focus you focus on whatever you want !but i don't think so that this camera owns this feature
Hi I'm not sure if you'll still answer questions about this camera but can you tell me how to change the FPS on the video, if that is possible, many thanks Laurie
Hi I'm not sure if you'll still answer questions about this camera but can you tell me how to change the shutter speed on the video, if that is possible, many thanks Laurie
@bignos29 Yes, you can use a micro sd card with an sd adpter. I use my camera in that way and I've never had a problem. Tho only thing you should look into is the transfer speed (up to class 6)
hi...thicko here. I have loaded the cd into my macbook pro but cannot get iphoto to recognise the camera. I plug in at both ends and camera shows usb on and set to photos...but nothing more happens...any ideas ? Please...thanks...k
hey all , i have a little problem with my fz38, i can't find the settings to make it show me the exposure in automatic , just like you show on the video at 4:52.
But addressing these points in the video would be very instructive for all potential buyers.
You refer the main competitor, the Canon SX20 IS, I read that it takes much longer to take pictures and even more when using flash because of the use of batteries.
With video would be interesting to compare this two points.
@StingRayINC Because they take a long time to make and don't generate any money - this is my full time job, so I have to concentrate on what pays the bills. I hope to do more videos in the future, but you'll need to go to cameralabs . com to see them...
I watched the CNet review, then this review, and based on this review I was so impressed with the camera that I bought one. I absolutely LOVE it. The 18X zoom is incredible, and the Image Stabilization feature is a godsend. I have done some awesome macro close-ups, as well as some dance videos. I like being able to adjust the Color contrast as well, as I have found that many digital cams do not do a good job of reds and purples. Thanks for a thorough review; I have NO REGRETS on my purchase.
Doesn't this camera have a flash? I'm about to buy one. From what ive read, this camera suits me well. But I just realised that it doesn't have a flash. I'm not a professional but, isnt' a flash necessary?
@PrinceGerman that's what image stabilisation is for. PS - try holding a camera out at arm's length for about one hour, then hold it about 20cm from a camcorder and see if you have a shaky hand.
I nearly bought this camera then Canon announced the canon powershot sx30 with the (THANK GOD) rechargeable battery and custom movie mode.
I am waiting for your review to decide between these two since you have been so far been spot on when i have been buying cameras and i have never regretted my shopping though i am a shopping addict hehehe.
It's a format (Like JPEG) that most photographers use so that the image is at it's original file, no compressing, no details left out. It's best for editing on Photoshop, most pros use it regularly.
HELP me some1 i cannont decide between this and Canon Powershot SX20is....How important is RAW? im looking for a camera to experiment with and get a feel of proffessional photography befor i invest in a DSLR
Hello again. Another question. The Canon SX20 model seems to have manual recordlevel control. Is the same feature found in the Panasonic FZ38?
Well, I really can't decide which one of these two cameras to buy. I'm not sure about the AA-batteries of the Canon, I also guess the will put some weight on. But, what I do like is the flash hotshoe and the naviwheel (i guess i would prefer to spin a wheel instead of tapping a joystick to for, ex. set the manual focus).
Regarding the film length mentioned several times here. I guess the limitations is if you want to record a whole clip which only can be recorded for X min with the FZ38 - model. Of course you must be able to record longer (as much as the card could take) streching over several movieclips. Who wants to make really long takes? Well, not many. Just tell me if I have understood this correctly. Regards, Fredrik
@rymdskrotet Yep, that's right, you can just start filming a new clip. But the limit is annoying for people who want to record, say, concerts or long interviews without interruption.
Hello Gordon, i have a little problem, i want a new camera, my previous one was still a panasonic (poket size) and it was very good. I have to choise between this panasonic (FZ 35/38) and Nikon P90...what do you recommend? I'm interested in only this 2 models, nothing else! Witch one is better in option, photo quality, etc? Sorry for the trouble, and hope to hear from you soon!
Hi I have this camera but I have a problem! I've recorded some videos using AVCHD and when I try to store them in my computer they don't even show up! I just want to save them... I installed the photofunstudio 4.0 hd program that comes with the camera and now I'm able to see the files but I can't open them if I'm not using the program! what should I do or what am I doing wrong!? All I want to do is be able to save the videos in hd and use them, upload them and work with them....Thank you
I have FZ38 and its really great camera. Well one thing I don't like about it is Auto mode. Sometimes it tends to calculate scene wrongly and you have to set aperture higher or lower. But you can get great results if using Manual mode. I compared it with my older sony V3 which has bigger sensor and smaller number of pixels and it almost always get better pictures outside when using auto mode than fz38. Also sony has more realistic colours that panasonic.
@dicey100 Check your manual. You can focus by half pressing shutter button but be sure that your at Auto Focus mode not Manual focus (small button on top of the camera). Also change auto focus mode in main menu or quick menu to desired focus type like spot, high speed, 11 point etc...
Thanks for the excellent and comprehensive review! I have already purchased the camera but if I'd come across this video at the beginning of my research (go YouTube!) I would have bought it much sooner!
tempted but my new promotion is taking up most of my time, im exhausted by the time i want to go out and record and all my new equipment is getting dusty.
Whats this obession that Japanese and Koraen camera manufactures have with slapping German lenses on there cameras, there not really Leica lenses or Schnelder, its a bit off a gimick, anyway great video.
I brought this camera recently on the strength of this review and other comments etc. Its an amazing camera it really is and its picture quality constantly makes me smile even though I'm used to DSLR's. I've had lots of 'bridge' cameras for day to day use but nothing as good as this. Excellent review camera labs and your partner stores even include amazon which is great!
Fantastic reviews (not just this one). Your side by side with similar cameras makes these reviews quite useful. I'm trying to determine if the FZ35, like the SX20 IS, is capable of simultaneous still pictures while recording video. That feature is pretty attractive for me.
verry interesting, thank you. I have used Windows Live Movie Maker, and have satisfied results, I think. But still have to learn a o lot more for better results. With the Windows Movie Maker the maximum I could upload was 480p. I didn't succeed in copying to the harddisk C! I don't know why???? Nice regards
This looks like a really powerful and feature filled camera and this reveiw has given me some key insight about it. I'm looking for a new camera for the occasional picture (which I know would be spectacular on this camera) and and to record my YouTube videos. I currently use a cheap JVC hd pocket cam and that is only good in day and the mic is rusty, does this camera work efficiently say at night but in well lit room without grain?
I bought the camera on the strength of this review. It made the technical parts understandable and clear. I've only had it a day and I am getting quite comfortable with it. So thanks.
@cameralabs There is another difference: FZ38's film length seems to be at most 30 minutes. For FZ35 there's no limit... as long as you have enough memory.
@bogdantudoryt Didn't I mention that in the review? That the European FZ38 is restricted, like all Eropean cameras, to shorter clips? BTW, the Australia / NZ FZ38 is not restricted.
Hey Gordon! Its a really good review!:D I'm currently using a JVC standard definition DV camcorder GZ-MS90AG but im not really happy with it so im looking for a HD DV camcorder however its quite expensive so im looking at this but i have a few concerns. Im not sure if this is better than a DV cam in terms of HD or whether i should get the canon SX20i? and what format does AVCHD Produce? now my DV cam produces MOD format?
Great review <3 now time fora stupid question.. do you think this camera is light enough to hold in one hand, ie to take pictures of yourself? Would appreciate anyone's help on this pretty pretty please
@leomendoza123 It's still the latest version, but I would be surprised if there isn't a replacement sometime this year - I don't know when or what it'll do though.
I was looking for a new camera and came across your review.
I have since bought this camera and when shooting it creates files with the extension of .mts. I have got VLC to play these on my mac but have not found software to convert to another file type that is easy to upload to Facebook etc.
@willbo1234567890 In WIndows XP you need the Core AVC codec to play AVCHD files and a pretty fast computer. Windows 7 has native support for AVCHD. These files use a lot of resources. But recent hardware shouldn't have problems playing them smoothly.
thanks for this very informative reviews and ur point to point comparison with SX20IS. I finally purchased FZ35. it is simply a superb cam.. again thanks a lot for ur reviews.
I'm thinking of getting the FZ38. I have the s5800 at the moment. For the money (£229) is it the FZ38 the best out there? I like the video on it and I like the idea of long zoom, also like doing macro. Is this the best for the money?
Hy guys...I have one question. Will the FZ35/38 have a 2010. successor? I'm really into this camera , and I'm planning on buying it somewhere in July, so i thought that it would be better to wait, so i can see what the successor (FZ48??) will offer. But today I read
i cant manage to import my filmed videos to my computer can anyone help me please?

Thanks again!

verry interesting, thank you.

This camera is really spectacular. Great settings and IQ, plus several accessories to help boost perfromance.

Hi,
I bought the camera on the strength of this review. It made the technical parts understandable and clear. I've only had it a day and I am getting quite comfortable with it. So thanks.

Hi cameralabs!
There are so many extended point and shoot cameras wight now, and I don't know which one to get!
The Canon SX20 IS, the Panasonic DMC FZ35 and the Nikon Coolpix P100!
Which do you recommend?
Thanks!

Great Review! but what's the difference between the z35 and the z38?
khardonh 1 year ago
@khardonh They're the same. It's just called the FZ35 in North America, and the FZ38 everywhere else.
cameralabs 1 year ago 7
@cameralabs There is another difference: FZ38's film length seems to be at most 30 minutes. For FZ35 there's no limit... as long as you have enough memory.
bogdantudoryt 1 year ago
@bogdantudoryt Didn't I mention that in the review? That the European FZ38 is restricted, like all Eropean cameras, to shorter clips? BTW, the Australia / NZ FZ38 is not restricted.
cameralabs 1 year ago
@cameralabs Why are they restricted?

@leomendoza123 It's still the latest version, but I would be surprised if there isn't a replacement sometime this year - I don't know when or what it'll do though.

If you had the choice, would you choose the FZ35 over the G11?

Hi cameralabs
I was looking for a new camera and came across your review.
I have since bought this camera and when shooting it creates files with the extension of .mts. I have got VLC to play these on my mac but have not found software to convert to another file type that is easy to upload to Facebook etc.
What should I do?
And can I shoot in any other format?
Regards
Will
willbo1234567890 1 year ago
@willbo1234567890 Try setting the movie mode to Motion JPEG instead - the files are more compatible - but they are bigger and don't last as long.
cameralabs 1 year ago
@cameralabs Ahh okay. Just found how to change the movie mode.
However these JPEG videos are not of the same quality as the AVCHD videos.
What would you recommend I do?
Do you know of any software to be able to convert the .mts files?
Will
willbo1234567890 1 year ago 2
@willbo1234567890 In WIndows XP you need the Core AVC codec to play AVCHD files and a pretty fast computer. Windows 7 has native support for AVCHD. These files use a lot of resources. But recent hardware shouldn't have problems playing them smoothly.

I found the fuji a bit plastic, feels like a toy camera, and i think that the fz38 takes better pictures, and the autofocus is fast and accurate!
