Even if I accept that it was, for lack of a better word, 'slavery', the God of the Hebrews ultimately did not approve/condone the keeping of slaves. It all goes back to the Exodus story. God himself liberated the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. This is why YHWH is often called the "Liberator." Get into the Prophets in the Bible and you see how God is ANGRY that the Hebrews are mistreating their brothers. Slavery was not a part of God's plan for humanity and he threatened the Hebrews b/c of it.

This was the video that made me unsubscribe. The Bible is the ultimate cherry picker's delight - there's something there for everyone to reinforce their individual beliefs with. Just read a passage out loud and say - "gee wiz, that's what I (have been/will be) (saying/thinking) - therefore I am godly and morally justified. I win! Tah Dah!" Every religious person thinks that God is in their corner. The Bible as a moral compass? This would be unacceptable by Jeffrey Dahmer's standards.

@Steadno Chances are you have either not read the Jewish/Christian Bible (Old and New Testament) or if you have, it has been so outside an academic study. I have a degree in Theology and Religious Studies and on a simple level, the Bible verses are NOT formulated out of individualistic beliefs and personal "justifications" but rather generations of religious tradition. Cherry picking is not the the intent of the holy text(s). Btw, you can thank the Hebrews for much of the moral law we have today

@missfrear Very good point ma'am. 'Slavery' is often the translation taken from the early Greek texts but there have been many German and other slav translations that insist upon the word being closer to 'servitude' or 'waged service' even.

@Steadno Again my friend, let's not jump the gun. I know you have not studied religion before so we can take it slowly. First of all, all of those things you mentioned were not unique to the ancient Hebrews and what was in the "Law" as revealed to Moses, though there were questionable things in it by today's standards, God ultimately wanted the Hebrews to take care of the poor, oppressed, widows, and orphans. The "ritual law" soon became unimportant to God. Don't overstate the bad here.

Now on slavery, as you probably did not know, slavery under the ancient hebrews was a LIMITED practice. Slaves could NOT be killed and here's the kicker, they HAD to be released after 6 years of work (most of them were poor who entered into slavery for work and pay). In many way the scriptures are the way God wants each individual to see it just as you do. I don't think that anyone could say who is reading it the right or wrong way agreed.
