I've read the Red book, as well as The Eddy Van Halen bio, and see how both sides of the VH saga have things to bitch about. I find them both very interesting, believe both camps have rather large egos. Too bad they couldn't work their shit out. DLR or Sammy. I enjoy all VH, and am enjoying playing the old stuff in our VH tribute band up here in Canada.
I met Sammy Hagar when I was riding on my boat, and all of a sudden a jet black cigarette boat came cruising down the channel with "Hot Love" painted in hot pink on the side... I screamed out "SAMMY!!" and he turned and waved, we later got together for some cocktails it was amazing, really cool guy
I don't really look at Van Halen as being better or worse with Dave vs. Sammy - I just think it's two different sounds, both really good in their own separate ways
My wife and I know the RED ROCKER on a one on one basis... he is the coolest guy and so down to earth... if you EVER get a chanch to meet him.... you will know what Im talking about, I got a TEN-13 Tattooed on my neck and he autographed right under it ...my wife Judi took a picture of him doing it as proof lol lol so I got his signature tattooed also Sammy loved it !!!!
I hate how when people who like david lee Roth better say Sammy sucks.Sammy is a great singer and he seems pretty professional.I too like Dave better but Sammy is still awesome.
I feel bad for Hagar. Most VH fans (including me) prefer Roth, but Sammy seems like a really nice guy. And you gotta give credit where credit is due - he has written some damn good songs.
@rch9000 - Rock n' roll is FULL of people that is treated unfairly only because they joined the band later and "destroyed" the greatest line-up. People don't seem to get that SAMMY has nothing to do with the break-up of classic Van Halen. He joined AFTER they broke-up and David Lee Roth wouldn't have joined the band any eariler with or without Sammy. Overall I also prefer classic Van Halen but most of the material with Sammy is great aswell !
Did anyone else notice Sammy is totally coked up here? At 9 seconds, he's sniffing and he's talking 100 mph the whole interview. No wonder he was so happy. : )
@el34power That's mainly because Dave never really had to WORK for anything. He was the son of a Dr. He was wealthy and had a wealthy upbringing. Sammy was the exact opposite.
@TheHockeyCentral Sorry, Dave worked his ASS off to get VH where they were before they chucked him out. Sure he fucked me over at a live gig by showing up so drunk he couldn't sing and I really was tempted to leave (the whole concert sucked), but that was ONE show. To say any musician who is at that level "never really had to WORK" is one of the stupidest things you can say. I like Sammy and Dave, I think Dave was better for VH in 1984 but when Sammy came, he worked hard too and did well.
I said he had a wealthy upbringing and didn't come from such humble beginnings like Sammy did. That was my implication by saying Dave didn't have to work for anything.
@TheHockeyCentral Point taken :) "Anything" in interpeted as VH as well. Glad you don't think that, lol. Both these guys worked very hard to get where they are. I agree that Dave had an easier upbringing from what I've read....how accurate what I read is always in question though, lol.
@mrwasso Fella, I KNOW that. Whether he "quit" or was "booted" is a moot point, even when it happened to now. My response was to mention that NONE of these fellas are without talent, ALL of them worked their asses off both on and off stage and they are deserving of that recognition, no matter what transpired. I was 17 or 18 when it happened, I liked both Sammy solo and Dave in both groups. NONE of them had fame HANDED to them. THATS a fact.
@RockJunkie04 Its about time i see a good comment like this. I agree 100%. I love DLR era VH and Sam era but i prefer diamond dave. And IMO gary should have stuck to Extreme...he was once again IMO great in Extreme but just didn't work with VH.
@IAMERRORLAMF People undermine Cherone's three years (ironic, being the third singer), but, as a Die-Hard Van Halen Fanatic, I have to respect what was going on during that time period and how it effected things.
First off, the blame goes on Eddie and the manager for the band at the time. Eddie wanted things done his way, and Sammy wouldn't give in to that dictatorship. Eddie calls Sammy and informs him that he's been working with Dave, Sammy has no other choice. Dave was being used as well.

Hearing Sammy throw wise cracks around in the interview and hearing Ed laugh in the background
in a crazy reminder of how close these guys were. Its too bad they split up,I just like to keep the happy times and great music in my head.

I've always liked Sammy "Cabo Wabo" Hagarita, especially when he was in Van Halen. My FAV song from his solo career go as follows:
"I Can't Drive 55 (65)", "Winner Takes It All" from the Silvester Stallone movie "Over The Top", "Red", and of course "Mas Tequila".
There's too damn many good songs from his years in Van Halen. I just think they made better music in those years: 1986-1996.
