Saw Tony in concert in Catford, London over 20yrs ago, so few seats sold he called all the audience to the first three rows, came down from the stage and did the whole show a few feet from me..he serenaded an old lady who was in tears at the end of his song...a true entertainer..a memory that will always remain with me..
I just discovered this/Anthony Newley when the weird Princeton university station played it late at night on Christmas. Any other good Newley songs that anyone can recommend?...hmm, it seems that this page hasn't been visited so recently. But, if anyone happens to see this..
wow, this is very 60's. One of the last generations that used shillings, rhyming slang. Even Newley was an old fashioned Jewish East Ender and a cockney. You just dont hear that anymore. We went from this classic matieral to what we have today. How crazy is that.
@chitlika She certainly was. My wife is Chinese and she say's Joan would be a style icon in China.....If she was Chinese!! As for Tony, what a talent he was.
A delightful sense of humour throughout. A fog-horn/siren like quality to the higher register. When it starts to swing, it gets serious tho'. Streisand does this too. Magnificent.
reminds me of frosty Sunday mornings in 1960s-era Britain, listening to "Family Favourites" with Michael Aspel on the old BBC Light Programme... so long long ago.
dear god this seriously just made my day! one of my coworkers goes on now and then about 'pop goes da weasel!' and we all bust out laughing out of nowhere....it's great!
I've also hear the words, "All around the cobbler's bench, the monkey chased the weasle..." Is that the American rhyme? I always like Tony's jazzy, swinging version. RIP Mr. Newley.
This is the first record I ever owned. I must've been about 0 years old at the time. Funnily enough, that pub The Eagle is just 'round the corner from where I live now, and I'm more inclined to be popping or pawning my weasel there rather than anywhere else locally, as they have really good ales and a shed with burners out the back so you can have a harry rag/salmon & trout, whatever. *****

Anthony at his best ... this was played countless times on BBC Light's "Children's Favourites" in the 1960s ... one of my earliest musical memories!

I love his subtle chuckles while singing, and how he still sounds amazing. I wish I could sing like that!

Similar to Streisand - effortlessly switching from straight rhythm to swing and back again. Genius.

this guy sings like hell. What a voice and sense of division.

I adore this little song but I prefer his interpretation of it on his 'Pure Imagination' album. Wonderful

When I was kid I always used to sing "Pop goes the Weas-all together now" to the disdain of my nursery teacher.
Thanks to Tony and my mum who had the record.....
