Been chanting 23 years and l must correct you: the correct term is Dai-Gohonzon which is the original Gohonzon housed in Japan. This was a creative way to show others the power of this practice. The most important element is faith - if you simply say the words you will receive benefit however, to change your negative karma effectively you must believe in the power of your life which inherently is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Doctors said l would never bear children. My sons are now 13 & 11!

Yes you are right. On my knowledge, the Nichiren buddhism is the only major religion which doesnt despise the mundane desires. More than that, considers it steps to enlightment ! So go on, the only condition is to focus visualy on Gohonzon while reciting Daimoku with high determination.

This is not the case of the nichiren's odaimoku, the concept of using words just as a meditation tool are more common to theravada sect of buddhism. Nicheren tends to regard the chanting of odaimoku as being something powerful, magical and healing and savior.

We have an object of devotion we chant before, like a mirror of our lives called the Zai Gohonzon inscribed by Nichiren. We concentrate on Study and Practice. I have been in Buddhism since 86, there's been alot of trials and tribulations in this particular sect of buddhism. Even if you don't agree with the Gakkai, which I always don't, I still chant and practice. You don't need the SGI organization to keep your practice going.

mantr comes from 2 root words mana+tr meaning mind-device(or way). unless used properly they hold no effect. repeating such chants vocally, eventually, may lead to a form of sleep. actual point is to subject them to the mind so that the mind has only one subject to ponder upon(ie. mantr). once reached a point which is not definite, this last block of thought can be blown away, the individual who walks this path knows when it happens n then everything stops...umm, yes, everything looses tension

As you already know, because I have said this before to you, Ikeda's abhorrence of homicide is well known. He discussed capital punishment at some length in his dialogue with Arnold Toynbee. Komeito was separated from the Soka Gakkai around 1970 in order that SG not get mired in party politics. If Ikeda took a stance on too many "political" issues, that would put pressure on SG members to conform, which would be oppressive and discourage members from forming their own opinions on such matters.
The teachings of Niciren and the Lotus SUtra emcompass all of the teachings, even those the Dahla Lama is upholding, one of the main teachings is that Myoho (the mystic law) is not to be saught out of oneself, where as in esoteric teachings, like tibetan buddhism, its is believe that enlightenment is found thru and external entitty as the Lama himself (which is merely a title, like king, lord, buddha etc)

Ikeda and the Dalai Lama are both peace activists and both are on the advisory board of World Centers of Compassion for Children International. The DL sent Pres. Ikeda a congratulatory message for something a few months back. I've no doubt the admiration is mutual.
Doctrinally, Tibetan Buddhism has some issues, but what really matters is what kind of person the DL is.

For example, it is impossible for me to attend or practice Nichiren, but I do Chinese martial arts and zen meditation. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo is not the only path to enlightentment, but it surely is a way. For example, it is impossible for me to attend or practice Nichiren, but I do Chinese martial arts and zen meditation. Saying that Nichiren is the only way tto truth is equivalent to being a fundamentalist christian. OM MANI PADME HUM, NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO. I'm an atheistic person.

How was your meeting? I'll be going to my first real soon. I went to the SGI in my area and chanted for the first time 2 days ago. It was cool. I can't wait for my meeting!
