This speaker cleared up the meaning of "res publica" for me. Previously, I had heard a JBS video where they explained that this means "the public thing" meaning the Law. That never made sense to me. "Free from things public" makes much more sense!! In a truly free society, the government's role should be limited to a very few necessary functions. It should not have anything to do with the personal lives of the People. But regarding Israel, they got their laws from Moses, not by consent.
