"Where I saw him in action was on film sets. I spent a week in a remote area of northern Romania's Carpathian mountains, as he shot several scenes of Cold Mountain with Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger and Philip Seymour Hoffman. This arduous shoot lasted six months in often appalling conditions. Battle scenes were shot in blistering heat; later, temperatures plunged to minus 20C."
This is the kind of movie that leaves you so profoundly sad and so full of a feeling that is hard to explain. It's a love story about two people who were separated by the great War Between The States, or as some would call it, Civil War. It touches ones soul and leaves you feeling empty with regret for Ada, who has lost the love of her life after his surviving the war. Only to come back home to her and die just when their love was consummated. War is Hell!

Nicole Kidman was too old for the character. It's too bad the studio wanted to get these big celebrities for the movie. It could have been good if played by younger unknowns.
A 21st century masterpiece. Some novelists never make it ... Some after book #20.Charles Frasier got it right the first time. What beautiful prose and what a spellbinding job with the movie and the music.
I hated this part because it ruined the whole freakin movie! he goes all that way through thick and thin because he loves her so much, and then he dies. terrible ending.
I look at it this way, he died for Ada. This is the ultimate sacrifice a man can give to the woman he loves most in the world. As men, it is our job to protect and provide. He gave his life protecting.
you know this movie is QUITE tragic, not just because of Ada's loss, but there's a sense of loss, struggle, and despair throughout the entire, almost like the movie is driven by it. Ultimatly though it ends on a happy note, kinda odd.

This movie was way too depressing. I thought it bordered on being a bad movie just because of the unnecessary gore and deaths. It was trying to pander to the Oscar panel.
But I do love this song. Gabriel Yared always writes beautiful music.
@Gramps1975 That's to be expected with modern entertainment. I only remember one Canadian though (Sutherland), but there were plenty of American actors as well. One of my favorites in the film happens to be the Irish Brendan Gleeson. I think all those involved did a great job (with a classic American novel) all n' all.
yeah its a war movie, I'm glad they didn't hold back I cant stand it when they do. That was life back than, hard and depressing, I'm glad someone had the guts to portray it truthfully.
@emwall315 :Gore & death"?? This movie was about the Civil War. There was nothing happy or pretty about it! It was the bloodiest, darkest moment in American history.
wonderful music, good job with the video,... i think im gonna cry :)) I like the movie and Im also very interested in history of the civil war era. Music fits the atmosphere soo much.
yeh, I found the sense of loss unbearable. not just of the characters, but also of history. the film felt like a glimpse of a bygone time, quickly swallowed by loss. 'Ada plays' on the piano captures it perfectly

that wasn't the ending. The ending was that Inman journey was worth it and was survived by the daughter they both had.
Yes. A bittersweet ending, but by no means a terrible one

Hmm? It was basically a war movie...

@cox1356 I kind of found it funny it was a movie about the American Civil war and it was shot in New Zeland, with english and canadian actors.

@cox1356 Renee Zelwigger is canadian as well. I'm not saying there werent any American actors but the main peeps are not Yanks
Gramps1975 7 months ago
@Gramps1975 Wiki says Zellweger was born in Texas and her parents are from northern Europe.
Personally, I don't care where they're born. I'm watching it for entertainment :)
