I think so - I've seen dogs "snap" at flies just to get them out of their faces... Never actually saw a dog catch one before (meat group!) but I doubt it would be very tasty! XD
I've one recording about hummingbirds too. If you can, go to my channel and watch a video called "Beija-flor na Antena" ("Hummingbird on Antenna"), divided into 18 parts.
That was a new one on me, too! I didn't even know I had captured it until I watched the video later. It's amazing the things you can see in slow motion! :-)
I think that's the REAL secret to getting interesting footage - spending TONS of time waiting and shooting EVERYTHING you see! This was one of those cases where I had no clue what the bird was doing - I was just awaiting a "fly-off" and later when I reviewed the day's clips I discovered what I had!
I spent 3-4 hours this morning just sitting in my backyard shooting... 183 clips! There's bound to be SOMETHING worthwhile on them but it's gonna take a while to look at them all!
It's a great past time though! I have a feeling you won't get bored with the camera for a long time. So many people have a particular hobby, and buy the camera for that hobby and the camera ends up not getting used much. I've gotten such an appreciation for nature photographers (I'm not sucking up....) who can track a Peregrin falcon diving with a tele lens from ½ a mile away without even shaking or your nature footage. There are guys who use cameras, and there are photographers.
I always found it amazing to see that falcon attacking the dove in flight-type footage too. Tracking and aim is definitely an issue so I'm planning to buy/make a rifle-stock to mount the camera on. I'll also design a ring-scope sighting device (for lack of a better description) to help solve sighting issues. I may have to incorporate levers and pushrods for focus and shutter triggering, and even a laser if I get reall ambitious!
You and I think alike! I saw a program a LONG time ago about a nature photographer that used a rifle stock to mount a camera to. I also thought about using the flash shoe to put a simple tube to site the cam with- probably exactly what you have in mind. I'm big on ergonomics. hehe, today I envisioned putting a linkage near the front of the camera to operate the movie rec button.
maybe the same reason my dog bites a fly and then spits it out? To kill it because it's annoying? Very interesting video!
