This may or may not belong here, but I am a huge fan of your videos. As a complete novice where do you recommend I begin to learn to modify amps and pedals? I've fixed some of my own gear by replacing parts, and I can swap pickups, pots, and the like. I have no functional knowledge of wiring ; I can follow instructions to the letter. I have a Fender Champion 600 which I would like to convert to original Champ specs, and a friend is giving me his bricked SD1 to revive from an 808 mod.
@NapalmBBQ thats exactly how I learned ... fixing stuff.... read some basic electronics stuff and always try and figure out the circuit you are working on ... eventually you will see where the compromises are ... AND read hot rod car mags ...
@NapalmBBQ when you read about the attention to detail a hot rod engine builder puts into making horsepower you realize that any manufactured product can be improved by correcting the design compromises of mass production .... and sweating the details
@patfurlan I shot a message to your inbox. It basically asks where the best place is to buy caps, resistors, and such. What brands are best for particular items? Seems like Panasonic is the way to go for caps.
Sorry, I got from your videos that you love to share your knowledge with other tube amp lovers. I am not so money oriented myself so I hope you don't get me wrong. Cheers from Spain.
@ManMartin I once opened a Caesar Diaz Modded amp to examine it inside to look at the mod, inside written in Sharpie was a very rude comment " #$^%$ get your own mod ! Ceasar Diaz"
I don't agree with that attitude but understand why MFG goop certain circuits and artists always claim their gear is "STOCK"
I don't disclose other peoples mods: and reserve the right to keep some info for my own use.
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate that I think SRV's TS pedals were Modded.
FWIW the Caesar Diaz Mod was a hard wired version of the mod that Fender sold as the custom vibroverb
no surprises if one knows that circuit ...
FWIW I think the comercial amp leaves out a couple of the elements of the mod so the amp is not exactly what SRV played ie one or two part specs also the magic is in the final tuning not in the "schematic"
in the process of doing the pedal I got to the point where the distortion was too much ... it sounded "wrong," less like a ts9, but it also sounded like the IN STEP album which has a much harder or harsher tone ... that was a confirmation for me and a Ligtbulb moment
it articulates very well, yes SRV was a killer player but everything else was modded mercilessly to try and get more tone ... the ceasar diaz amps, the endless refretting, strat neck swaps reversed tremolo block... he openly says he was on a quest to get a bigger tone.
If Diaz could hot rod vintage amps and fuzz faces why not generic new pedals. since it was well know he used 808s ts9 and ts10 without care
I always thought that at lot of SRV's tone came from a. his fingers, b. the volume. That modded pedal definitely has more sustain though. Nice job. Does it still articulate as well?

@patfurlan Will do. I appreciate the advice! Why hot rod car mags? They're cool, but I don't understand how they apply.

@ManMartin no I'm not money oriented ...
"give a man a fish and he is fed today, teach him to fish and he is fed for life"
other people are very money oriented and will take without hesitation or thanks
