It simply does not compete in the same market price range. the 1DX is expected to be around 6 to 8 grand while the 5Ds are around 2 grand. Not the same performance but not the same market either

Honestly the 5D III is what should be saving the 5D line.. It's sorta sad to see though that they're "apparantly" upping the MP a lot (I think I read 28MP somewhere?). Perhaps if they Up the MP by a bit to say... 25-26, then maybe they could add a little speed for something that doesn't cost the same as a 1D/1Ds/1Dx

What I'm looking for: optimized video with clean hdmi 4:2:2 high bitrate out, better dynamic range on video, def better processor, no 12 min/4gb cap on videos, better cooling inside the camera to prevent overheating during videos, 60fps in 1080p, better codec. The inherent problem is that, unless Canon improves the AF on the 5D mk III, they'll pretty much be shooting themselves in the foot with that line. I can understand trying to save their 1D line, but at the same time, releasing a 5D mk III without improving the AF will pretty much kill future sales on their 5D line. I don't think a megapixel upgrade and additional video features will be enough to get people to buy. They have to upgrade the AF, or people will just buy discounted 5D mk II's.

5D II's main shortcomings: No (built-in GPS) and No direct GPS connection interface (something the Nikons have). 9 AF points is abominably scarce a number. The rolling shutter, although not specific to 5D II exclusively, is yet another headache.

 There are of course many more, but the afore-mentioned points are the prime drawbacks of the 5D II.

and that's the problem with canon- it artificially cripples its cameras in order to not compete with itself. i had the 1d3 and 5d (around when 5dII came out) and i sold it all to go to nikon. the d700 is what i always wanted canon to make, but i gave up on holding my breath...

Actually i think alot of people are quit excited for the 5D Mark III the difference here is the 1Ds form factor and ergonomics and faster bust rate this appeals to alot of professionals, the 5D's successor will shot at higher ISOs not to mention an updated processing engine a better AF system and better video capabilities wireless flash control etc. I AM EXCITED LOL

I feel the autofocus and the fps are invariably linked.....i.e. the 7D needed a good af system to keep up with it's 8fps.....however I feel 5D mk 3 users would feel cheated if the AF system was not at least up to the 7D system, considering how old the 5Dm2 is now....and how good the 7D is, and how much a 5Dmk3 is likely to cost.

I expect Canon to have improved on everything. The thing people really want is a cheap competitor to the Nikon 3Ds image quality in my opinion.
