  • mainstream this, mainstream that. listen to the man's beauty and stop being such a self-consious little shit.

  • is this not on iTunes??? :(

  • @emkitch1111111 OH SHIT NOW WHAT???!

  • Ill listen to the saddest songs till we start talking again

  • I believe this was before bon iver right? :) Justin is just wonderful

  • @poragirl93

Yes. I think this is from 05 or 06

  • Too much debate and not enough listening...brilliant...check out jacko hooper if you have a moment...if you like this yer in for a treat

  • "mainstream" to most people just means music they don't like... music is opinion... stop debating.

  • @MrAngryvirgin Mainstream music to most people is mass produced music that sounds good on paper, but in reality is a soulless-in key generic songs from artists who appeal to the masses and to make the max profit in the music industry.not to say that some mainstream bands don"t stick out, they are just hard to find, or is that just me who thinks that ?

  • @sommervilleTRS117 I agree completely that's why i put "mainstream" with quotes, because more times then not... they just use that word for a sound they don't like or when their private musican gets discovered. i'm a huge justin vernon fan and im glad he writes from the heart and not from his producers line up

  • grammy deserved.

  • sooo beautiful!

  • I don't know why, but everytime I listen to this song and it gets to the part where it completely stops and then starts singing again, I have the impression he stopped because he started crying or something.

God this song is so beautiful and sad...

  • I would like to marry this man right here.

  • @YesCarlyTheLover you and every other girl......and guy

  • @YesCarlyTheLover Me too, and i'm a guy.

  • Justin Vernon has a fantastic amount of soul.

  • Who gives a shit what is "mainstream" and what isn't? Can't you idiots think for yourselves?

  • at least mainstream is making a comeback

  • Such a talented guy... Yet people think mainstream artists are better

  • @bigdaddypit412 sorry to burst your bubble but bon iver is quite mainstream. recent collaborations with Kanye West and Lykki Li cemented that. not to mention the countless late night shows he or the band have performed including letterman, later with jools holland, and most recently SNL. He is fantastic and deserves every penny he makes and especially deserves every penny they give him to budget for his band so we can enjoy such beautiful music.

  • @aboyabeard I think he's meaning that it's not like Lady Gaga, LMFAO and stuff. Yes Bon Iver is very popular but I think it isn't mainstream. Mainstream music is mostly made by artists who use unknown technology to bend their voice or do wild videos about going into the club. Artists like Justin Vernon, Ewert and the Two Dragons and so on, they are the kind that want people to listen to them or they just want to get off their chest's. The mainstream people just want to make listenable music.

  • @aboyabeard There is a difference between "mainstream" and widely respected. Mainstream carries a negative connotation of conformity and consumerism. Bon Iver should not lumped in with that shit. Sure, he won a grammy and is getting more and more popular but his music is by no means similar to that of other "mainstream" artists like Rihanna, or J. Cole, or Nicki Minaj (that filthy animal) lol. He's just that good that he is able to reach a broader audience with poignant music.

  • Justin Vernon - in every one of his projects he is flawless. Beautiful, haunting, graceful - the emotion in his voice makes my heart stop. i love his music so much. it's perfect.

  • go to google, type "rainy mood" and open the first result and start this song, then enjoy ;)

  • @Goodmute Awesome, thanks dude :)

  • holy shit... this is hauntingly beautiful

  • oh and listen to his cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me" . . . Fantastic.

  • you can't help but love him!!

  • Very good...found it randomly...enjoyed

  • Wow this really is exceptional. Anyone know where this recording came from? I'd rather have it in my itunes than constantly open as a tab

  • @AdamRockMusic It came from Heaven.

  • @Bob4JAne1 I'm sorry, I know how lame an answer that was, must be the wistful sounds coming from my speakers.

  • All I want is to marry him.

  • I love feeling the depth he has in his music through his voice, the pain and sadness, but also a beautiful tinge of hope.

  • @SharpestKnives Did you ever think that maybe Vernon doesn't want money? Were you aware that his shows with the smallest groups are always best? I have a feeling that he would like to keep it that way..

  • People, I wasn't trying to cause a stir or any sort of bad vibes that may be cast on the video, I was merely saying that sometimes artists alter their musical style and preference when they become rich and famous, to a less personal, more mainstream sound, and I just want the pure grace of this mans music to remain. By all means, I would love the world to know what this man can bring to them, not only musically but emotionally also, and I just want that quality to be eternal within his music.

  • @Mr94941 So far I feel like Justin and Bon Iver have managed not to fall prey to the mainstream musical style disease, since their last album was just as fabulous as the last. Fingers crossed! :)

  • @TheSim1derful Haha, you dont listen to much indie music huh? None of it ends up that way. Good news! Only shitty alt bands sell out

  • @StandardofPurity Ends up what way? *is confused by your comment*

  • @TheSim1derful He obviously means not to fall prey to the mainstream musical style disease, as it is a reply to the statement you made in your comment.

Conversations usually are a series of sequentially *connected* utterences.

  • @Bob4JAne1 I know what conversations are, smartass. I was confused by the ambiguity of the statement "ends up that way". It could either mean indie music doesn't end up being commercialized, or it doesn't stay in its pure, pre-commercialized form. You mean the latter.

Call me an idealist, I still think music can survive the mainstream machine, and I think Bon Iver has done just that.

  • @Mr94941 The only problem is it does not matter what you really want someone else to do, or be like. Vernon will do what he wants to do and what makes him happy. He is not the type that will break for a bunch of fame or for a bunch of anything. Worry about you, and focus on whatever that looks like, sounds like, etc. I never respond to anyone here or anywhere else, but I know this guy and he's not going to break. Now focus on yourself.

  • @Mr94941 Wow so true, i just feel like copy past your all text all over again, and again, and again...

  • I dont remember how i came to know justin, but i know it wasnt because of some big mainstream explosion of hipsters. Ive been listening to justin for a long time and he has really helped me through some tough times. Justin is a god.

  • @Girlyskater95 Justin Vernon has been one of my favourite artists for 2 years now. He has helped me through some dark times as well, his music is eternally awesome.

  • everyone just quiet down......and feel what this guy has to say.......the rest of the chatter can wait till its over

  • rain sound the alarm

    and stain my broken heart

    the things violinist

    buried in my gut

    there are chances or choices

sometimes you just have to cut

    wow

  • I hope more people get to listen to this and appreciate it as much as most of the fans. The one thing I've always respected about Justin Vernon is the fact that he can put so much emotion into each and every one of his songs. It's beautiful, definitely keeps me at peace in the toughest of moments. Definitely considered a talented artist in my books. Cheers!

  • Have more faith in him and his music. Let everyone know of good music, and the real artists will be the ones who stay true. In the past year or so Justin Vernon, Arcade Fire, M83, Explosions in the Sky (and more!) are being played on Top 40 stations, proving you can hit it big AND still put out some of your best work. It's just too selfish to keep something this beautiful to yourself.

  • I don't believe Mr. Vernon really cares about being on the "golden", star-studded, polished pedestal marked by popularity and money anyway. He already makes money from people like us, and from what I hear from his music and lyrics he seems like the type of guy who embraces the, as @Mr94941 calls it, "untouched, unpolished standard of music on a quality pedestal". We're not being selfish here...just tired of seeing sellouts and bandwagon fans.

  • @Sharpestknives No, you are not understanding him/her correctly...

  • Sheperds Bush Empire, Septemeber 2008: Who was there? I was leaning up next to the bar, overlooking a bloke who looked like Hurley from Lost doing the sound decks with an ipod (ipods seem so dated so soon!). I'll never forget it. I felt uplifted when I left. I felt I'd seen pure, uncorrupted music of a kind that is rare these days. Music to express feelings, to release emotion: for catharsis. It felt as close to a religious experience as an atheisit, such as myself, can experience.

  • Why are so many people talking about Bon Iver here? He is an amazing, passionate musician, but should this not be about Justin Vernon's talent?

  • @AaronBellMu5ic same person

  • @AaronBellMu5ic bon iver=justin vernon

  • Breathtaking, heartbreaking, beautiful.

  • this song just makes me feel lost, searching for something I can never find

  • he is such an inspiration too me, sometimes I want to cry because finding this sort of music as good as him is so impossible nowa days with all the chav stuff.

  • goooosebumps. (:

  • Music will always be music and an art. Regardless if it's known or unknown, the enjoyment of art is based on personal preference. Good art should be shared and it just depends if people respected it or not. And as for bad art, I'll leave you to discover that for yourself, for my judgement is my humble opinion.

  • i fucking love when it can be heard justin getting up and openning the door and all u can hear are the birds singing.. and then he restarts the magic !

  • @palidell justin vernon doest make music to show that he has better motoric skills than a dog.

  • Music becoming popular does not make it any less great

  • It saddens me how many negative comments I see on Justin Vernon's videos. If you like it, GREAT!! That's why you're here. If you don't, move on. Please find music you do like.

  • @olivecoloredeyes I see this comment on the internet all the time. To me it is very childish to tell someone what to do - allow them their opinion, no matter how negative.

  • Where can I download/ buy his music?!

  • J. Tillman - James Blues, it's right over there to the right of this.. Click it. This is also lovely by the way.

  • beautiful, all these lame comments saying how they wish it doesnt go mainstream lol, thats pathetic. The only grudge you should hold against mainstream music is the large corporations taking the money for themselves and not the artists. If this music was mainstream i would have more faith in the world because the majority will be listening to great music.

  • I only wish the guitar was mixed a little louder..

  • Yeah I cant stop listening to it either.. I need to go buy some strings for my acoustic. This is exactly what I want to create.

  • G A L A U...

  • @Mrpiggyinthemiddle, Justin Vernon is the lead singer of the band Bon Iver.

  • This bloke sounds almost as bad as Bon Iver. Who is he anyway?

  • @Mrpiggyinthemiddle

He is wonderful. That's all you need to know :)

  • @Mrpiggyinthemiddle trollolololol hohohohoho

  • This mans heart must have been broke very hard cause i understand where he his coming from.

  • When you've found your forever love, only listen to this song in total privacy, for pity's sake; especially if you know you'll cry. My humble advice.

  • This song makes my eyes rain.

  • @sarahdanita Best comment ever :D

I will quote you someday, your comment made me smile =D

  • I hope this kind of music never makes it big. I want it to be just for me and the few who still hold the untouched, unpolished standard of music on a quality pedestal. The standard that, even with the music of today, is still regarded as art, and not money.

  • @Mr94941 I wholeheartedly agree.

  • @Mr94941 AGREED! :) Truely is beautiful xxx

  • @Mr94941 I agree. It may be selfish but I love being able to feel like I have songs like these all to myself :)

  • @Mr94941 Well said my friend.

  • @Mr94941 So if I understand you correct, you think that Justin Vernon shouldn't make any money on making this fantastic music, because you want him for yourself? I hope you're joking...

  • @SharpestKnives you are so right

  • @SharpestKnives I think he meant he doesn't want this music to be tarnished by big corporations and whored out. That music like this is truly appreciated by those who actively seek it out, the common populace isnt equipped to appreciate "real" music.

  • @Subversion85 Exactly.

  • @SharpestKnives no. but mainstream kills art. and let's face it, most people just can't comprehend

  • @FreshHareUSA Mainstream doesn't kill art, art is killed by money grabbing artists trying to sound like other mainstream artists. A standard needs to be set, i wish this was mainstream because if it was then other artists would be aiming for good sounds because it would sell well. Also "most people just can't comprehend"... really? Taste is taste, you honestly believe that you're taste places you above "most people"?

  • @SharpestKnives hmmm I guess what Mr94941 tried to tell is, that Bon Iver should be loved and listened only for his music and not because everyone has to (like, a song appeared of him on the twilight ost, so everybody has to like because of twilight. Not because of bon iver or his music)

I know it sounds sad, but thats how it mostly goes...

  • @SharpestKnives I understand Mr94941. I get the same feelings to where I only want the few elite dedicated listeners to know his music and truly appreciate Justin's work. On the other hand he needs money to live,of course, but in his interviews he says he is doing well.If he can live in his dad's cabin for 3 months alone he can pretty much handle any obstacles. He is making money no doubt, so good for him. But this music is beyond perfect and should only be appreciated by true fans.

  • @SharpestKnives Of course he's joking man. He was expressing himself, just trying to state his approval of this guy's music. You obviously didn't understand him correctly.

  • @tremoloheart Well in that case. This guy is amazing! Just began listening to his music a few months ago and now I'm seeing him in the summer. Amazing stuff!

  • @SharpestKnives No he is saying that i hope this talented musician doesn't make it otherwise he will be poisoned by the rich's of the media , upon which he will probally stop making this kind of music we all find our little time to listen to , Hence your been an word twisting fag and a hypocrit.

  • @SharpestKnives

No I would also like to keep Justin Vernon out of the mainstream where hipsters can ruin him. Keep art alive.

  • @SharpestKnives no,of course he didnt say that.he said that today is made for the artists 2 make money and this is why it is a low quality.he ment that bon iver makes this amazing music because he does it in the name of art and not money.he makes money from the music, not music for the money.

  • @SharpestKnives this particular person would prefer them not to become mainstream. Although this almost certainly reduces total income it reduces the people that listen to them and as most do "jump on the bandwagon." This enables people who just love this music to listen to it and reduces the mainstream influence on the music and stops it from changing from the beauty and art which it actually is.

  • @jVlaC LIKE COLDPLAY!!!!!!

  • @seth2386 what do you mean like coldplay.

  • @jVlaC Man coldplay was the shit when they first came out, clocks yellow they were intense and passionate now there so uz its not even funny they were formed into a mainstream pop band....PArachutes was their best album. It sucks cuz there good people there interviews are interesting and pure but in my opinion they conformed for the money. If thats what they wanted cool, but they just don't do it for me anymore...just my opinion though

  • @SharpestKnives that's not the point..... you're an idiot

  • @SharpestKnives You completely misunderstood....If i may intepret mr...i think he is saying today that music on the pop level the radio level is driven so much by money and not quality...anythign that gets the club pumping shall we say. Or sounds cool on a ringtone. But this guy along with a other such as damien rice and horse feathers even mumford and sons. Their music is pure and driven by passion, not driven by the amount of cash awaiting them at the end of the record.

  • @seth2386 All music should be driven by passion, and Justin Vernon is a great example on this. What I was saying before, that I think an artist like Justin should earn a lot of money on his music, because he deserves to earn a lot money on it :)

  • @SharpestKnives however i'm sure they want to make money and as well they should, such a rare gift deserves to be rewarded

  • @Mr94941 fucking hipstar lol

  • @Mr94941 unfortunately this guy is nominated for 4 grammys.... but we can look at it in a positive way, the rest of society may be waking up to what real music sounds like.

  • @Mr94941 fucking hipster

  • Comment removed

  • @Mr94941 wow that was pretentious

  • @Mr94941 You can have the idiot reality TV stars, athletes and politicians, and anyone else who makes a dime for something utterly useless, all to yourself then. This man, and people like him, should be the ones "making it big." They shouldn't stay hidden, on some imaginary pedestal.

  • @Mr94941 that's very selfish of you. art like this should not just be yours, it should be shared amongst the majority. if the art of the artist would be affected by something as trivial as money, than he was never good to start with. but as you see, justin vernon's music still remains a beautiful art even though he is seen with more recognition.

  • @SASJKL i will tell you exactly the same thing i told Shrpestknives. no,of course he didnt say that.he said that today is made for the artists 2 make money and this is why it is a low quality.he ment that bon iver makes this amazing music because he does it in the name of art and not money.he makes money from the music, not music for the money.

  • @aleksissoulafoula regardless of whether justin vernon makes money out of art or art for money, my point initially was his statement that he wants his music all to himself and nobody else. i find that very selfish and silly as music should be shared and cherished by everyone who enjoys music. what i said about money is merely a rebuttal towards mr94941's claim that if bon iver will stop making good music because of money.

  • @SASJKL well, yeah, obviously i did not take much notive of this part of the comment. i shall agree with you.

  • @Mr94941 Dude Bon Iver has already grown

he has songs in films, people cover him all the time

And i think Justin is the main reason for that

  • @Mr94941 I understand you comepletely. Everyone is so sad that mainstream music is untalented. But really, i'm overjoyed by that fact because it makes the talented and beautiful music that not many people know SO much more special. I too have your hopes.

  • @youshouldbesmiling That's just stupid.

  • @Mr94941 You're the most selfish person ever.

  • @Mr94941 Dude your are so right man, i feel it is as a gift intentionally left for me to find to experience and cherish, music like this just for lack of a better term soothes my soul

  • I love the way i can never do anything else whilst listening to his songs. I can only stop and listen.

  • Does this remind anyone of Nick Drake a bit???... cause it does for me :)

  • @loonyleper I defintely hear it, it sounds like he is playing in open d

  • Did you recognise the fact that at 5:25 he stops for a while, then gets up, open the door, walk outside and continue playing the song, still recording it! I like this interpretation so much. The studio version becomes live.

  • @bigmuffmama ur so smart and your taste in music is amazing.... tell me do you actually know ANYTHING about music or do you just listen to what other people listen to because you are "cool" have intrapersonal problems you have a severe problem with bullying at school/work, your father beats you and treats you like the scum you are and your mother doesnt understand your sexual orientation, you are confused about the feelings you have around dogs and sheep and all of this drove you to be a dick

  • i love him. with all my musical heart.

  • Inspirational.

  • 4:55 sounds like he is fighting a yawn

  • there should be a lyrics-video of this song !

  • Lara <3 :b

  • never heard this song before its gorgeous

  • Make me think of my best friend who no longer speaks to me. Why I don't know.

  • Breaks my heart.

  • He sounds like he's suffering when he recorded this song. It's almost embarrassing to witness a stranger at such a personal moment.

    Beautiful music.

  • I need tabs for this.

  • @bigmuffmama Seriously. You just went to each of his videos, begging for attention. This is the 4th time I've seen this exact comment from you. If you don't enjoy this perfect music, just stay away from it. We don't need someone like you ruining our experience with Justin Vernon/Bon Iver with your ignorance and self-hatred. Let us love, and go listen to Slipknot.

  • @distantapollo Woah dude, no need to bring slipknot into this, their early shit was great, so is mr vernon. Don't be ignorant just cause he is.

  • @TheKingBoards Nono, I'm not saying Slipknot's early stuff is bad, It's just full of anger.

  • I have this album... Hazeltons, I listen to it daily, along with Blood Bank EP... I'd recommend getting Hazeltons, so beautiful!

  • @amandaann07 MY NAME IS HAZELTON!!!

  • @bigmuffmama If his music "smells like ass" and he's a "hack crybaby whiner" then why the fuck are you listening to him, you obviously don't know what good music sounds like. People come here to listen to his powerful lyrics, it's not for fucking imbeciles like you who wouldn't know about something so absolutely mind-blowing and beautiful if it hit you in your fucking face.. People like you are a fucking waste, do something better with your time than write about something that you don't care for

  • I love how he conveys his emotions in this song. It kinda makes me feel connected to him. It just about kills me at 4:56 when it sounds like he's crying. This song definitely comes from the heart. Thank you, Justin

  • why does that fucking emma watson vid keep popping up? go away, this is justin vernon!

  • such a haunting song with so many layers to it

  • lol hunt to find them i put in his name and found the song XD

  • @monkeyteaser268 I've never even heard of this guy...but as i kept clicking away at youtube videos starting with Passenger - "What you're THinking"....I found this guys music...and I'm glad i did.

  • @usmctelles But please tell me you know Bon Iver... same guy.

  • *faints*

  • I hate youtube comment sections

  • i tried to write a comment on how amazing this song is, just the guitar in the beginning and his voice, there's so much raw emotion, i just love it. so much.

  • @bigmuffmama

    1.) you're a pussy

2.) i would fuck you up

3.) then listen to something else you fucking idiot

    THE END

  • Sounds like he falls over at the end?

    a tad confused..

  • This is just the most perfect song.
