Mercedes quality today isn't even close to the quality this engine was. I know M103's that have beaten up every day, they where pushed to the limiter every day and got around 470.000 - 500.000 km on the clock. Show me a petrol engine that can do that! Without new pistons or something other, those M103 may have blown a head gasket,but who cares

@NFreund but you have to keep in mind Mercedes put over $600 million for research into this car so for the time everything was only the best. The W201 style took them into the mid 2000's for the C Class look exept for the hood. Mercedes wanted them to last and unless you wreck them they will be classics. Unfortunatly my father didnt change the oil in his 190e for around 70000 and now that I have it( after an oil change every 4k of course) it runs like it did off the factory you are exactly right

@NFreund heat isnt the only reason that theres sodium in the valves... and it was porche if i can remember who invented that not mercedes.. when i learned my trade.. during cylinder head design and volumetric efficiency testing at the shop i worked in, we found that a sodioum filled valve- expanded less when at full op temp- reduces weight- masivly overlooked factor here lads cant beleive ye missed it lol.. lastly on a test head.. almost 1k over flating point on standard valves.. lighter spring

have you people ever seen the exhaust from a WW2 airplane? there's no exhaust manifold unless there's a turbo, fairly rare in those days. stubby exhaust pipes, that's about it. Iconel valves can take a lot of abuse.
