Thank you for that comment. No it's not on par with Xbox 360 or the latest 3D PC game. Sorry to disappoint you there, but hopefully the gameplay will be the strong point. It's a bit better now than what you see here.
Try my zombie game at my website for a look at what it might be like.
Take note. This is the effort of a 1 person team. XD
Give me a company and a staff and a budget, and you'd see this idea fully realized in 3D. So you'd be making any type of Superhero you could want, and then you'd enter a GTA 4 type city, and be the Hero there with free roaming sandbox gameplay. You face drama and tense situations as you try to put an end to crime in the city...
Well it's been in development for a long time. It's not bickering, it's a good idea to read what I posted. Even the major game companies could learn something interesting. I've played tons of games, and they always ended up missing something...
Go to my website if you want to download a game to play.
I'm now tweaking the Powers and Working on the Events- Events are problems that arise for the player to try to solve. I've borrowed a little idea from one of my Favorite Games, GTA. When the player is defeated they respawn at the Hospital. Ready to try again. This is a little less harsh than the "You're Dead" blacked out screen with red words and game termination I had before... It is a little more heroic also to be able to dust yourself off and rush back into the fight. You do lose some XP tho.
Now where XP is concerned. You won't want to keep getting defeated, because you could lose so much XP you revert to a less powerful hero, So your hero has a weakness and can become weaker and weaker by being defeated... You might become so weak that you have to start re-building your hero. So be wary if you decide to take on that Tank. If could knock you back to ridding the sewers of Rats and Alligators... Again... XD
Heh, I should post a new video of the Game in action! There are a few changes, the Character Stats are no longer in the game I saw no use for them really now the Player's Character increases in Speed and Strength by levels, so at Level 0 the Hero is young, and not very strong. As you defeat menaces you gain experience which makes you become stronger. The Player begins as a Superhero though, and you get your powers right off the bat. The game is more focused on how well you use your powers...
Good news! Gazillion Entertainment has signed a deal with Marvel Studios to re-kindle the Marvel Superhero Universe Online Game. So it's back from the dead! We may be able to play in a Marvel MMORPG after all! It was too much money to pass up, so I'm glad it got picked back up!
Sigh... We'll I've been working on the Superhero game again, Re-coding the Character engine a bit, so the player can move from level to level of the game without needing to re-load their character... What a pain! : /
Devised Super Hero or Super Villan Balance. If you kill innocent people you gain Villan Points, if you kill other Villans you gain Super Hero Points. If you have notoriety as a Super Villan, then people will flee from you and the Cops will attack you along with other rival Villans. So being a Super Villan doesn't help you it's a Punishment. Although my Super Villan Rules the World he's in heh...
The difficulty will have to be in the scenario, overwhelming odds, hidden solution, time based. As much as I'd like to have the player go into his backyard and practice his heat vision until it's powerful enough to do damage to someone, that just probably won't work. It would have to be like a comic book. Here is your character, here is the dillemma, fix the problem. Build your character, take him into a situation, and win the scenario.
Haha, right now the stats also have little bearing on the outcome of battles... That happens when you deal with Superheroe's, the concept is just so wild, it's hard to establish traditional leveling or stat based accomplishments. Example, Freeze power; will it just freeze a little until the player is more accomplished? Hah, a PC facing down a gun won't have time to learn to use his/her power, it's do or die... This is a different game concept, i've noticed. Play mechanics have to be different.
So back to work on this game for a while. I have a plan to have episodic missions for player's characters to do, kind of like a comic book episode... Available from my website. [Not anywhere near ready yet, just a concept].
I would like to put out episodes over time, and keep the game interesting. I have an idea to get story concepts from outside concepts, so anything goes, from a Zombie outbreak, to a huge robbery, to a Space based emergency, anything could be a storyline for the episodes...
Well if you see in this video at the charater creation screen you have a list of powers to choose from, you can pick 4 powers and mix them, so you could pick Flight, Super Strength, Fire Blast, and Ice Blast. Or an combination of the 20 powers.
and one more question the game have a big number of powers? and can add more powers and costumes, maps etc i think the answer is yes, but only for curiosity, and for boring the players can do this? hehe
Ah yeah, there are about 20 powers you can pick from but your hero can only have a maximum of 4 powers, I chose that because I have never come across any Superheroes with more than 2 or 3 main Superpowers, with the exception of Superman... Also the Costume creation is shown in a one of my videos, it's simple in that you choose only the color of the outfit and if the player has a cape or not. I'm afraid I can't do the extensive costume design, that would only be feasible in a 3D version.
your right jrag the world have lots of people that will like your game,no one game (sorry for da bad english) lives of graphycs.... for an example freedom force is worse in grphx and physics that ummmm....the new game of spider man but in my opinion is very very best than spiderman because of his gameplay and mods maps custom content and the most important the HQ atmosphere so is this im talking about your game let the players use the imagination sometimes cause he have a classic hq atmosphere !
Custom maps; well a level editor would be possible but I don't think that would happen. The Save Engine, and Character/Costume designer took the better part of 9 months to program. The main goal was to allow the player the ability to create and save multiple charaters and use them in the game's scenario's which was acomplished. A lot of work, that was!
dont listen to PancamoXXL... your game dont suck your game OwNs man your ideas are pretty good and the classic old style look is cool a lots dont stop your work i clame i am a freedom fighter (game) fan and fuck the graphics i dont play graphics i play games good games and the grphx of this game is very cool and nostalgic ... Lets go jrag1000 dont stop working!!! not for too much time ;)
Hey man i am so happy because i know that the world have inteligent and creative people like you creating games with simple appearence but with lots of fun and related stuff (i liked your games a lot!!!!!) im Brazilian and true comic book and games fan reply please where can i get a demo of this true masterpiece?????? :D
Heh, thanks for the support! I'm still working on that one, another project has moved to the front of that one for a bit. I hope to get some of these games releasing soon. :)
PancamoXXL is looking at the game for Graphic quality, I like the Xbox 360 just as much as the next guy, but 2D games have a special quality about them that draws people to them. Plus it's easier to make these if you are a 1 person designer. I try to focus on games that you don't see.
So I'm thinking I should really just stop working on this game altogether. I've learned tons of coding breakthroughs even attempting this, but now the industry has finally caught up. Champions Online, D.C. Universe Online, wow nothing then everything. Plus there is Ultimate Alliance, and X-Men I and II for Xbox and 360. Plus a lot of other Superhero games based on individual characters...
STILL NO OFFLINE CITY OF HEROES OR D.C. UNIVERSE THOUGH. Give me one of those but offline with downloads.
The Baldur's gate RPG is slow and methodical, I've examined that concept and came to the conclusion that it really would not be that good in actuality. Reasons: Superheroes are traditionally now you see them now you don't. Rarely do they or would they trudge through a maze or try to solve a puzzle. They are like this BAM! BOOM! WHOOOSSHHH!!! ZING! ZZAAAPPP!! TADA! WOW! Look up in the sky it's a bird it's a plane! No it's well you get it. They're like that. not magnifiying glass to the street.
Lets examine City of Heroes: Well I've played it. It's really fun. It gets old. It gets fun again. It gets old again. Good: SuperHero! Customizability! Flight! Freedom to an extent of movement! Super Powers! Multiple Superheroes!? O.k. as far as the World being overly populated with Heroes, "I thought that might be a rare thing" well it's not and you are nothing special... Plus it's online only! I at one time thought a Baldurs Gate Superhero RPG would be good, but that might get boring...
Optimum game: GTA 4 with Superheros and the ability to ROMP through a City and Catch badguys, prevent disaters such as fires, saving people from the top of buildings, rescuing people from train tracks, stopping subway muggings, or just flying around or walking around. Imagine a lifelike city with you as a Superhero in it. You could sit around and do nothing or run around and do everything, sandbox style. Heard about a bad gang in another part of town, go there for a few nights and clean it up.
New Update... Well the Top Down version like some people have mentioned is pretty limited Graphically. Ruling out 3D totally the only options left would be 2D traditional side scrolling >:/ or FPS Static View >:/ Hmm... With the latter Flying is out of the question... And that pretty much destroys a Superhero if there is no possibility to fly around, that is the 1 sole power that would say THAT IS AN ORDINARY NPC, and THAT IS A SUPERHERO.
this game sucks man...no offense....who do u think will play his kind of game? , old old style , not even 2d..1d i think it is..has nothing interesting...this type of games i was playing on my good old buddy 286...sucks...
I've been working on 2 versions actually, the version you're commenting on and a 2D Sideview version, although the 2D version looks better, it doesn't allow for the expanse and depth of the game I have in mind. 3D is out of the question for a single game designer. heh
In a Sidescrolling game you would have better art, but linear game play.
Plus your totally missing the features that those old games never accomplished. Such as designing the look of your character.
I've been waiting for a decent "offline" Superhero game like this for ages, and no of the professional companies seem to "get it" they don't catch on. No one wants to play a "Linear Superhero Game" in this type of game there is randomness, ever superhero game i've played has been limited to a single storyline... If I can do this game the right way, it will be fun check out my other games, and check out my website.
Well it's a work in progress... I've got the parts down that not many games give you that you can buy today with all the glitsy graphics. If you have a little imagination you might have fun with this.
If you have a Free-Roaming world with NPC's and quests to do and badguys to knock out, why wouldn't it be fun? You can make up a lot of different characters.
that was pretty badass...i know i could never do anything close to that. I can do math like a mother f**k but when it comes to programming and stuff like that, ouch.
Heh, thanks! Yeah it takes a while, the Artwork is actually the hardest part. Working out the interaction and powers and the save engine comes in a close close second! heh
So to everyone that's seeing this. It's not about the graphics, it's for people with a little imagination. The graphics just give you enough to put you there, plus i don't have the time to put that much effort into it. Anyway to the old Marvel Superheroes Paperback RPG, the Champions Paper & Pencil RPG and the D&D people, you know what I'm talking about.
Now it's going to be closer to an Action RPG, but to date there has been no 'OffLine' game like this.
Plus I'm trying to do destructive and interactive environments, so when you punch the guy across the subway station, he will actually smash through a glass window if he collides with it.
So also the game concept right now is to break it up into Scenarios like a ComicBook. I was toying with the idea of a Full Roaming World, but I think I can get faster results by building page by page type levels, I'll play with both Ideas and see. Right now Im trying to finish the powers engine the maingame.
Thanks! I tested the superpowers and came up with a total of 4 powers that you could add to any character you make, and I don't even think you'd need that many, so there is lots of room to make a pretty interesting character combination I think.
It's very early but I think i've got the idea nailed down.
I can't do it in 3D because that just takes too much effort for a single person, but 2D top down should be o.k. I tested a side scrolling version of the same idea, but top down allows for more depth.
So 4 powers are available to a character out of 20 or so different powers. In the comicbooks most Superheroes actually have 1 main power that sets the characters personality. 2 usually is a maximum, so 4 should be more than enough.
At the end of the Video did you see Superman using Super Cold Breath to freeze the Machine Gun firing maniac? Yup you could make any kind of character and add Superbreath but didn't it look cool as Superman? I can't stop the player from Typing in say Spiderman and building a Character that resembles that comicbook character and giving him say spider web powers... You could do what you wanted. Plus I think it will be neat to try out different character designs for different problems.
I also found that when you did [Freedom Force], the designers almost smacked your hands by slaping a ridiculous price tag on the character if it was too strong, as a way of keeping you from breaking the story with "Superman" I don't believe in that, I'm of the opinion that if you want Superman you should have him, and just throw Superman level problems at him. Level the Playing field, not cripple the player. I don't know what they are thinking.
O.k. I'm gonna make a comment! Superhero Computer games are the hardest to try to design! Superheroes don't fit well into reality, because they do really weird stuff like shoot lazer beams from their eyeballs, punch holes into brick walls, defy gravity, and dress in really weird outfits, among other things like running faster than a speeding bullet, wearing capes and tights, and having really odd names like Spiderboy or Superguy!
Yeah yeah I know there is City of Heroes, Champions Online, but I noticed there is no even crappy Offline version of those games, and none planned except Freedom Force, which is really good, but just doesn't lend itself to really custom characters, or at least when I played it, I found it really hard to have a truely custom character, without having to essentially design one outside the game in 3D package and import it first converting it to something understandable by the game engine...

Have they even Seen any of the Superman Movies?
