I love Leonard Cohen and i usually love U2, but they are not quite up for this song to be honest. Bono can be annoying sometimes and this is unfortunately one of them :/
ya know, i'm continualy amazed at how willing people are to condem other people for simply being human... i really like u2, and if they want to sing and play with someone they honestly respect, i dont see why thats such a big problem.
i dont agree with the comments here, as much as i don't like Paul, I can't begrudge the fact that he want's to work with HIS musical hero's, his influences. He does make a donkies bollox of this song though! U2 Joshua Tree, thats about as good an album as one can listen to.
@buckleygeneration as much as I disagree with your U2 bashing, I concede that maybe this is necessary for the music of older legends to continue existing. U2 are the 'new boys in town' relative to Cohen, and I understand how you would prefer the LC-only original. Just like how I was (*@#&( pissed with Mary Blige wrecking the U2 masterpiece, emotional and understated, with her excessive wailing flourishings.
@buckleygeneration (continued) But this might be a necessary evil. mary Blige's feature introduced One, though ravaged, to a new audience of popular radio listeners. Like how I'm now introduced to LC via U2 (I'm 20). And there's no better way that to discover music organically, on your own. *off to check out LC's Hallelujah, since he was the original composer*
@comp0stable While you obviously know that I dislike U2, is has much more to do with image and personality than it necessarily does with music, though their music past 2000 has really only been getting worse for me. A big problem for me is how Bono always attempts to associate himself with older, much better musicians, and how he wants to set himself up as an equal to them, when he just isn't. But I do like some of U2's music, and I heartily agree with you on the Mary J Blige thing.
"It's a voice marinated in Kirschwasser, sulfur, deer musk and snow; bandaged with sackcloth from a ruined monastery; warmed by the embers left down near the river after the gypsies have gone. He has a voice like a carpet in an old hotel, like a bad itch on the hunchback of love. It is a voice meant for pronouncing the names of women – and cataloging their sometimes hazardous charms. Nobody can say the word “naked” as nakedly as Cohen He makes us see the markings where the pantyhose have been."
Love this tune sooo much it's better than sex!!!! But i haven't had sex in a while so MEH what can i compare it too??...Luv U U2 and Cohen...Canada's forgotten gem
Exquisite! The master among the masters. This man, Leonard Cohen, is a God and a gentleman. The day I saw him performing in Las Vegas, it was a great day in my lifetime. He doesn't know how important he is... a man of virtues.
This song is awesome! Leonard Cohen is superb. It's too bad that this documentary was marred by Bono's absurdly pretentious commentary. Oh well. Still great stuff.
its masterclass, so smoooth and cool!

I question Cohen's choice to let U2 in on the performance, but not even Bono can ruin this perfect song, though not for lack of trying.

Cohen's voice is brilliant, for me better than the original recording. Add to it Edge's poignant guitar work and you have a masterpiece.
