I just stood behind the front screen door holding my digital camera. Things got a bit hairy towards the end of the video with the last two strikes landing pretty close to where I was standing. I wish I had a tripod (and a better memory card/batteries) so I could have kept filming without endangering myself. The lightning maintained the same intensity for the next five to ten minutes. I had never seen such a lightning display before or since.
You haven't see anything yet. Wait until the Great Tribulation starts. Acts 2;38 is still God's plan of salvation. Obey while u have a chance. Jesus Christ is coming soon.
@VideographyOfStorms Forgot to reply to your message! Thanks for the kudos! I knew that such a strike was coming with the unbelievable intensity of the lightning to my north and west. I've lived here for almost 35 years and had never seen such a freaky, continuous, lightning display. It was close to a "perfect storm"; temps near 80 degrees with dew points at least as high as the low 70s. Perfect conditions for good C-G strikes!
I just keep coming back to this video. I'd like to put it in DVD and run it through my surroundsound. Grew up East Coast - live in California. I miss these monsters. Thanks for sharing this bad boy!
just breathtakingly awsome, but the storms that i see in ohio, because i live there, are better!!! if you want to see svere storms, then come to ohio!!!!!!! ive seen lightning that curls up like a dragon!!!!!!!!!
I keep coming back to this video. Incredible storm. I live in Southern California but from East Coast. I miss the incredible air mass thunderstorms you guys get back there. Thunderstorms in California are rare and not much to write home about. Keep this good stuff coming - just don't get dead.
Every now and then I also "relive" that night through the video. When I do watch it I realize how not-so-terribly-smart it was standing at my front door, inches from the outside where a very intense lightning storm was happening! Still glad I was able to tape it; even gladder I didn't get dead!!
Hi !! Great vid, no matter what camera you used!!! My mother in law lives in Ringoes (south Hun cty I guess) and my wife said they used to get some real big ones back in the day. We live in south jersey, I'm from here and where I'm at, the dynamics or energy always splits right here where we are, most of it goes north and some goes south of here. The lines of t-storms react in that fashion, so we always wind up watching someone else's show! Weather patterns change, I suppose. Great vid!
Thanks for the kudos! I'm sure you got some beauties this past week with the stalled front and the remnants of Hurricane Bill going by. We've been getting smacked around this summer with rain and thunderstorms, especially these past couple of weeks.
Ringoes is in southern Hunterdon and they do get their fair share of storms, maybe since the land is flatter than where I am so storms are less likely to get split up.
Well, that's true with the front stalled out(that's been the case all summer with the ridge to our east and the trough to the west) we did get some c/g lightning but again not as intense as what you guys get up there!!! But anyway we may ALL have to deal with this guy called Danny later in the weekend!!!
That storm would be what my Dad would used to call a 'hum-dinger'.......We don't see those kind of storms very often, especially at night, but when that intense lightning and crashing happens like that right over the house in the dead of night, I am hiding under the blankets.....its so creepy to be woken up in the middle of the night by a violent storm like that.
Not with this storm. Some years ago the house got hit and we lost some of our chimney! Four years back I was sitting at the computer with no storms within 50 miles when a bolt from nowhere hit the telephone box, 40 feet from the house. Some of the electricity went through the phone line (we had dial-up back then) and right into the computer. The jolt knocked the mouse from my hand, melted a part of the mouse pad, and blew out the modem and computer monitor. My hair was standing straight up!
'll have to find my vid of the radar loop from that night. There were multiple super cells that night. This may have been the same cell that ended up hitting Brooklyn. I remember a large part of a northern cell broke off and ended up converging with the southern cell that went over my house (and 20 or so minutes later Brooklyn). The vid I posted was when the storm was on route to Brooklyn
I'm glad you liked my video! I live in extreme southwest Warren County. Just a few minutes from PA
And my dream is for an exact repeat of this storm next summer and setting up my tripod near a window.
But for now I am very excited about the potential some meteorologists see for a snowstorm here in NJ around the 21st-23rd. Nothing like an early season snowfall! Do you love snowstorms too? I like all extreme weather as long as it is not too costly and deadly.
Thanks for the kudos! Actually I haven't watched this video for a while. Even though it happened more than one year ago now, I still get goosebumps watching the last three bolts. That last one was really really close.
I just watched your close lightning strike videos, very cool! Whereabouts in northwest NJ do you live?
Here in Missoula, Montana, Techically, 8-9-08 but whatever..
anyway, i am watchin an absoutly mind blowing lightning storm hundres of miles away from me in the sky. I can't hear a thing, but the visions the lights are creating are far far beyone beautiful, and Cosmic. I'll post a video soon.
We just had another line of storms come through at 4AM yesterday, and this line had amazing amounts of lightning (definitely rivaled the 8/8/07 storm!). I was too tired to grab the camera for this storm and I had to get up at 6 for work. Seems as if any thunderstorm we get in NJ drops almost constant C-G bolts; lightning killed and injured some people on the Jersey shore yesterday afternoon.
wow thats a good vid!! the lightning near the end was to near for comfort!! good job you went in!! lol! did the lightning keep going like that after? it seemed very powerful and constant
Thanks! That last bolt was really close, probably only a couple hundred feet away. Self-preservation kicked in! The storm parked itself overhead and dropped similar lightning for the next 5-10 minutes; the house was constantly shaking. If I had a tripod and kept the camera filming, the rest of the video would've been like the last 30 seconds or so.
Excellent footage, my friend! I really enjoyed this a lot, and I must say that those last three bolts really startled me - some of the loudest thunder crashes, too!
Thanks! We rarely get storms like this in New Jersey so this was a rare treat. The storm fed off of 80 degree F temps with dew points not much lower than that (VERY uncomfortable night!) so the fuel was definitely there for the lightning.
Thanks for the reply! Indeed, high moisture levels are definitely a commonly large contribution to frequent violent lightning, but the kind of dewpoint your're referring to is amazing! I've just added a video response to this awesome 8/8/07-Tstorm with my own 7/28/89-Tstorm video...this one also has some tremendous lightning and thunder shows...enjoy
i live in warren county phillipsburg and on my web i have this same storm jetted right to edison passaic county then small tornado touched down in brooklyn ny but my clip is from 12 am till 4am tited WHAT A STORM 2007 then i got news on this storm titled SERVERE STORMS 2007 check it out all
My god, there were 4 tornado warnings around the area. One for Somerset County, NJ, next for Kings County, then for Queens County and finally Nassau County, NY.
I did take radar animation video of the storm entering NJ. I'll post it for you and anyone else interested in seeing it. It'll be called radar animation of 8-8-07 thunderstorm. Search that and it should come up. And yeah you're tripod idea is good I think I'll try that this summer to.
I was in SW warren county NJ during that event, just to the west of hunterdon. It was about 2:45. I recorded it too but the quality sucks so I didn't post it. I am 19 and lived in Jersey my whole life. I too have never ever seen lightning this intense before. As great as this video is it doesn't fully show how intense the lightning and thunder was. It was actually religiously errie how those defeaning thunderclaps never ended. Those claps at the end were the same at my house also.
In retrospect I wish I'd started recording around the 2:00 mark and then kept the filming going for the next 5 to 10 minutes because the lightning and thunder almost literally did not stop in that time! The whole house was shaking with the thunder, the lightning looked like someone had a huge flash bulb outside every window.
The next time I film a thunderstorm I think I'll use a camera mounted to a tripod and leave the camera since some of those last lightning bolts were waaaaay too close!
Can I say that THIS 5*-Tstorm video...which I rated this AS--is soohhh awesome... I love it to shreds!!! The loud claps of thunder too...I adore to shreds.... Maybe you and all others here like to try out my own 7/28/89-Tstorm YouTube video... it too got lotsa nighttime CGs with lotsa thunder.
Thanks for the rating! All the ingredients came together for that storm: it was almost 80degrees at that time of night, very high humidity, and a mini low pressure spun its way from Pennsylvania. The oddest part about the video was that it wasn't raining, even with all the lighting and thunder!
this storm hit hauppauge which is western suffolk long island aroudn six am. it woke me up and i literally felt like the earth exploded it was so bright and LOUD key word LOUD
What kind of calls were you getting? I'd imagine there were some people whose houses were hit by lightning! I just realized that it wasn't raining in the video with all this lightning flying around. Weird stuff.
i live in canarsie were there was a direct hit the thunder was louder then that and the lighting was non stop i have never experienced that in my whoel life and i never want to again!
I live in Spotswood. Even though I got the tail end of this storm, It made its mark. That storm was sick though, it woke me up and I stayed up taping it.
I live in Warren County, and was lying in bed watching TV when this started at 2AM. At about 3:15, it was very intense, and I was afraid of a tornado, so into the living room I went. It was over by 4. It was a very interesting 2 hours.
A few minutes before I started taping I was looking north and northwest towards Warren and the lightning was literally continuous. Only one other time in my life can I remember lightning that did not stop! I was watching the bottom "crawl" on the Weather Channel at the time and it mentioned Brass Castle and Washington boro getting hit with dangerous lightning, 1/2 inch hail, and 70mph winds so I knew what was coming!
Yep. I live in Washington. It was nuts. I too watched the "continuous" lightning. And it was a solid 2 hours. The last time I saw a storm like this was in Knoxville, Tenn.
it was the worst in the bronx that friday befor the tornado we had the worst lighting storm in years they said it was so loud and so much at the same time it was even scary for me and in 24 and a weather geek lol this was the craziest few days i ever seen
Wow dude- I laughed at your "okie dokie" comment, b/c if I were you, I would've said the same exact thing. Sick capture. I was mildly awake for that but it arrived in Bklyn 2 hours later and I slept right through the rest of it.
DUDE, you just had 3 lightning strikes in a row, each one closer, during the last 20 seconds of this vid, holy shit!!! I live in South Jersey and we didn't get this thankfully. I'm a big time storm lover but that storm you guys got was a ridiculous.
Yeah, the storm was approaching fast and that last bolt was probably only a couple hundred feet away and the thunder shook the house. That's when self-preservation kicked in! The lightning and thunder continued with that intensity for five minutes after I stopped filming. I wish I had a tripod and long lasting batteries to catch all of it!
Ya, i guess global warming is "just a theory". The storms we have won't get more intense and frequent and less predictable. Oh, and 2000 lb sows fly, jimmy hoffa is alive and chillin' with elvis, and president bush is the most peace loving president of all time. ;)
my street was hit by lightning for the second year in a row and we had downed power lines again. This was on July 30 but this storm may have topped it.
oy vey it did hit my hometown torndo wise

Wow dude- I laughed at your "okie dokie" comment, b/c if I were you, I would've said the same exact thing. Sick capture. I was mildly awake for that but it arrived in Bklyn 2 hours later and I slept right through the rest of it.

DUDE, you just had 3 lightning strikes in a row, each one closer, during the last 20 seconds of this vid, holy shit!!! I live in South Jersey and we didn't get this thankfully. I'm a big time storm lover but that storm you guys got was a ridiculous.
regibold123 4 years ago
