@JamilaHossain : Asafoetida (Hing) has a very distinct flavor and is there more for digestion that anything else. If you can't find it, feel free to skip it.
This simple type of khichdi is made all over India, not only in Gujarat. We do have a Gujarati style "Masala Khichdi" - you can search for it on our channel or website.
very similar to the Maharshtrian 'varan bhat'. In Maharashtra however, khichadi is the same, but with a tadka (fodni) of mustard seeds OR whole cumins and ofcourse currey leaves....some people optionally add 'goda masala' for added flavour.
Add more veggies and you have 'Bisi Bele Bhat' from coastal Karnataka...
Thanks for sharing the recipe. Did you use split, hulled mung beans or whole? Also where would I find a recipe for Gujarati soup that Khichadi is often served with -- I didn't quite get the name?
i can't find asifoetida anywhere around here, i still never tried it... organic turmeric is also very hard to find. i made some today by heating up a quarter tsp of cumin seeds in some 1tablespoon of olive oil in the pot then add in everything else after the cumin seeds fry in the oil for a few minutes.

hi guys- kadhi khichdi rocks! thanx for your variation khichdi. will try.
how come your moong daal is yellow cause we use the green moong daal. wheres the difference? r they different varieties or has either been processed in anyway. I know whole moong is green and the split moong daal we use is also greenish.
Hey..u guys mentioned in the video tat this Khichdi is for "SICK" ppl & babies..do u have khichdi recipe for Normal ppl?? anyways will try 2 find frm the internet for spicy khichdi recipe..Thx anyways!
@chicagonri-khichdi is an all rounder. its normal food and a staple diet in places like gujarat. What they mean is that because of its texture and health benefits etc it is especially good for sick/ elderly or babies like for example soup/broth its for every1 but especially good 4 sick people.
Hmmm. I did not know that. I thought you cannot add asafoetida in water and boil it. You need to either roast it and then add it or add it during vaghar in heated oil. Thanks anyways for reply and video.
Majavi gey - been craving khichri for ages, plus it's good for my diet - don't forget the papad with it!!

can i make it with chana dal?
aparnak002 9 months ago
@aparnak002
Khichadi is meant to be a light meal. Channa daal can be used but it will make the dish very heavy.

Hey...is this the same as gujrathi khichdi..??

You can find asafoetida at your local Indian grocery store (if you have one) or try online at herbco (dot) com.

Do you add asafoetida in this?
einsteinwallah 3 years ago
Yes, we do. Just a pinch. Asofoetida helps with gas problems associated with Daals or beans.
