unfortunately, once mine gets heated up, most times it just forms a ball that hovers in the middle of the lamp and barely moves :( anybody have any suggestions?

@muh1h1 because the heat comes from the lightbulb on the bottom. so the "water" on the bottom is hotter than the one in the middle or on top. so is the wax rises up it cools down and gets hard again.

@muh1h1 ja es ist wachs. wenn sie kalt ist und du sie umdrehst siehst du das es ein fester klumpen ist. aber sowohl das wachs als auch das "wasser" sind geheime mischungen und firmengeheimnis. darum sind mathmos lavalampen am besten weil keine andere firma deren rezepte kennt wie die das wachs so schön zum fließen bringen. denn mathmoslampen bilden immer sehr schöne formen wenn das wachs flüssig ist.

But basicly how it works is the wax heats up and rises but then it cools down because it is at the top and drops to the bottom, and it repeats.

Of course it's not lava in it! It's some kind of oil and wax in it. The purple in this lava lamp is the wax and the forms it's making is the wax being heated up. And it's cooler longer up in the lamp, so it "freezes". I think you understand.

Thank you for the compliment BMcCue7! The room is in fact completely purple and has lampshades and bedding to match. It's may favourite colour. I didn't paint the curtains though :-D
