clarence ashley is one of my favorite old time singers, i was reading the ralph stanley autobiography where he mentions that ashley was touring with the stanley brothers sometime in the 40's, but not as a musician but as a minstel comedian preforming in blackface, always figured clarence had a dry kinda sense of humor, cant picture the guy doing those skits haha
Pentagle did it brilliantly at the end oif the 60's, Joan Baez did it earlier, and this is the AMAZING earliest recorded version (which I first heard on the magnificent and towering 'Anthology Of American Folk Music that I bought some years ago) of an incredible song that stretches back deep into the Scottish and English Folk tradition! Essential!
Without a doubt Clarence is my favorite Old-Time musician. The sharpness of his lonesome voice adds a lot to the authenticity of his style of playing. In my opinion many young banjoists still can learn very ,very much from his records !
aw, why did someone have to go and say he did blackface? totally detracts from him for me.
