  • They are my demon, they are my soul. Through the good and the bad times they fill a hole. I hope one day I will be free, until that day the drugs are on me.

  • best song ever

  • Reminds me of my dear old Dad when he had cancer and the words are so apt. xxxx Great band.

  • @lisajayne71167 What a lovely touching post, I hope you are doing ok, with love and peace to you x

  • This is perfection..one of the best bands ever performing one of the best songs ever on LJH...thanks for posting ...song always makes me think of my mom...

  • No useless glitzy talent competition or manufactured band or boy-band could ever make something as touching as this.. it's real. Real music is hard to come by these days.

  • One of the best song writers to have ever lived , All bow to the god like genius that is Richard Ashcroft !!!!!!!

  • Who ever was the band manager, promotion dude, or record label company messed up with the US market. This band deserved much better promotion. As an American I am sad that I didn't listen to them more over the last decade ago. Thankfully YouTube is helping to correct my folly and can see the live performances from Glastonbury and Jools Holland. Richard > Noel

  • Thank God for The Verve-'nuff said

  • British pop blows away shallow American garbage. Just AMAZING. Urban Hymns couldn't be duplicated on "Forth" unfortunately.

  • THERE IS FKN HOPE FOR HUMANITY FOR AS LONG AS WE HAVE THESE LIFESAVERS ON OUR EARTH.....PURE FKN TALENT

  • The English level of sophistication is beyond america

  • This was so much better than all the rest at that time, and I was in love with them too! Same night Nick McCabe inspired me to pick up a guitar when they did Life's An Ocean, everybody else was raging about John Squire and I just saw McCabe as an otherworldly creature who didn't fluff his lines due to Cocaine abuse. The longer I play guitar the more I realise I will never emulate the bugger! He's a Clapton, Gilmour or Hendrix but will never be remembered that way.

  • Wow.Sublime!

  • Brings a tear on every time.

  • What a top performance!

  • beautiful song,,,,,the verve is an underrated band,,,greettings from Perú

  • for awhile i was suffering from clinical depression, and this song helped me get through some of the worse times in my life. i was turning to alcohol most of the time, and feeling guilty for the sake of doing so. thank you the verve for helping me getting through the most difficult in life.

and after that, this song always made me reflect about those dark ages, and how i can overcome it. very simple but powerful, very soulful. i thank the band from my heart.

  • Really beautiful song

  • the whole performance is brilliant and my favourite of this song, but the ending is just so powerful. eyes closed and pure passion from a man totally in tune with top class music.

or should i so *was* in tune...

  • Four albums, three breakups. Well, that should earn then an entry in the The Guinness Book of Records. What a waste of genious..

  • Makes me cry every time I hear this song. Beautiful.

  • Pure class...

  • Ashcroft is a twisted brilliant person!

  • So many bubbles

  • It makes you sick that Amy Winehouse - Rehab on Jools Holland has 1.2 million views and this only has 55 thousand!! This song is epic, and i love the string arrangements in all the Verve's songs!

  • @spannersam92 come on why does that make u sick? let those kids watch amy if they want to and we´ll stick to masterpieces like this

  • His voice is so pure live, really impressive!

  • Just Class!!

  • odd way of recording it though....they've just concentrated on richard as though the others don't exist

  • so trippy mega reverb going on there

  • reminds me of my High school years... relaxing

  • klien ,he must be a jew with a name like like that and of course money to be made out of other people, typical jew.

richard ashcroft.........lives it as it is....lucky man is a all time favourite, passion

  • Richard Ashcroft is undoubtedly one of the most gifted, talented british songwriters in the last 25 years. FACT

  • Simply adore the melancholy they produce... Love it

  • The ending is just epic!!! :)

  • I love this...its funny that after all this time people are still learning about the verve and the entire scene at the time...peace.

  • I was 17 and it was my first year living in the Manchester... I wanna cry! So beautiful....

  • Pure English Class

  • WOW!

    The Verve

    Radiohead

    Travis

    Phoenix

  • uk corporations didn't do enough to promote these guys in the US>>FUCKING AMAZING!

  • I totally agree!! I'm from the U.S. and I love this fucking band. I remember when this record came out like 12 years ago. I thought it was the best thing I'd heard in a while and still holds up to this day. I think it sucks that Mick and Keith were royalty pricks with them.

  • It wasn't Mick and Keith who sued them, they had nothing to do with it, it was Allen Klein the manager of the Stones at the beginning of their career. He took advantage of The Stones contractually and owned the rights to their songs up until the early 70's. He was the one that sued the Verve. because it was a Mick and Keith composition, their names were added as co writer to Bitter Sweet Symphony but Klein through ABKCO owns the song. Klein was an asshole. Everyone agrees.

  • It was the same in Australia, I only heard there other stuff because I actively looked for it.

  • the best live performance of all time! great song, great voice, great guy!

  • beautiful performance by everyone here, what a voice that man has..

  • top song..

  • monnick706 my thoughts exactly

  • wht a tune love his voice

  • great tune.

    thanks for the post.

  • I much preferred The Verve before Urban Hymns.

But this is pretty beautiful tbh

  • Whos the fifth member? And why dont they ever mention him. Hes in some of there group photos.

  • Can't remember his name, but he replaced guitarist Nick Macabe for a bit, Macabe came back then they toured as a 5 piece, when the band reformed he dident join them.

  • Cool, thanks a lot.

  • lol! no problem!, wikipedia will provide with all the answers though.

  • simon tong that was his name!

  • His name was Simon Tong.

Apparently, they didn't ask him to join because it would cause communication problems within the group.

  • f....ing sweeet =O

  • F**king amazing!

  • the drugs don´t work . I adore very much this song.

  • Goosebumps. Amazing!!

  • Oh this is beautiful! What an amazing performance. I love their sound - dreamy, melodious, and full of meaning...

  • great!!!

  • you're such a music noob

  • De gustibus non disputandum est!

  • classic

  • Nick McCabe is all over the place there -- and not in a good way. I always wondered why [The] Verve spilt up - and now I know. Still, the new album will either be amazing or awful -- I'm hoping for the former.

  • easypeesy, I thought so, too. What's going on with him? (ha: "I always wondered why the Verve split up - and now I know.")

Yeah, I'm not sure, though, that it was McCabe that brought about the split. Richard's rather bloated ego at the time seems more like it.

  • 33mallo: from what I've read recently I think you might be right. Hopefully the shee-itness of his solo work will make him think twice before splitting The Verve up again.

  • Agreed!

Also, I just had to take another look at McCabe on this video. I felt an attack of vertigo coming on as I tried to follow his movements. Just amazing that he managed to stay upright through the entire performance. I'll bet the rest of the band was relieved when it was time to exit the stage. (Simon Tong is a trip, too: He always looks like he's ready to fall asleep.)

  • cool i didn't know this broadcast was released on dvd. best performance of this song i've come across.

  • Richard Ashcroft is a fucking genious.

  • bellissimaaaaaaaaaaa

  • bellissimaaaaaaaaaaa

  • The best song and singer ever. Great

  • Pure Quality, Love It!
