They are my demon, they are my soul. Through the good and the bad times they fill a hole. I hope one day I will be free, until that day the drugs are on me.
This is perfection..one of the best bands ever performing one of the best songs ever on LJH...thanks for posting ...song always makes me think of my mom...
No useless glitzy talent competition or manufactured band or boy-band could ever make something as touching as this.. it's real. Real music is hard to come by these days.
take it from Richard .... and take it from ME ; drugs just DON`T work !!!! Believe me ,after 22 years blowing my ass off I can honestly say ; DOPE SUCKS!! 13 months totally clean now , used to smoke trainloads of grass... has cost me the love of my life... my future and ( almost ) my personality ...but you know what ?? its NEVER 2 LATE ; kick da habit and start LIVING AGAIN!! LIFE`S G R E A T !!
Who ever was the band manager, promotion dude, or record label company messed up with the US market. This band deserved much better promotion. As an American I am sad that I didn't listen to them more over the last decade ago. Thankfully YouTube is helping to correct my folly and can see the live performances from Glastonbury and Jools Holland. Richard > Noel
This was so much better than all the rest at that time, and I was in love with them too! Same night Nick McCabe inspired me to pick up a guitar when they did Life's An Ocean, everybody else was raging about John Squire and I just saw McCabe as an otherworldly creature who didn't fluff his lines due to Cocaine abuse. The longer I play guitar the more I realise I will never emulate the bugger! He's a Clapton, Gilmour or Hendrix but will never be remembered that way.
for awhile i was suffering from clinical depression, and this song helped me get through some of the worse times in my life. i was turning to alcohol most of the time, and feeling guilty for the sake of doing so. thank you the verve for helping me getting through the most difficult in life.
and after that, this song always made me reflect about those dark ages, and how i can overcome it. very simple but powerful, very soulful. i thank the band from my heart.
the whole performance is brilliant and my favourite of this song, but the ending is just so powerful. eyes closed and pure passion from a man totally in tune with top class music.
It makes you sick that Amy Winehouse - Rehab on Jools Holland has 1.2 million views and this only has 55 thousand!! This song is epic, and i love the string arrangements in all the Verve's songs!
I totally agree!! I'm from the U.S. and I love this fucking band. I remember when this record came out like 12 years ago. I thought it was the best thing I'd heard in a while and still holds up to this day. I think it sucks that Mick and Keith were royalty pricks with them.
It wasn't Mick and Keith who sued them, they had nothing to do with it, it was Allen Klein the manager of the Stones at the beginning of their career. He took advantage of The Stones contractually and owned the rights to their songs up until the early 70's. He was the one that sued the Verve. because it was a Mick and Keith composition, their names were added as co writer to Bitter Sweet Symphony but Klein through ABKCO owns the song. Klein was an asshole. Everyone agrees.
Can't remember his name, but he replaced guitarist Nick Macabe for a bit, Macabe came back then they toured as a 5 piece, when the band reformed he dident join them.
Nick McCabe is all over the place there -- and not in a good way. I always wondered why [The] Verve spilt up - and now I know. Still, the new album will either be amazing or awful -- I'm hoping for the former.
33mallo: from what I've read recently I think you might be right. Hopefully the shee-itness of his solo work will make him think twice before splitting The Verve up again.
Also, I just had to take another look at McCabe on this video. I felt an attack of vertigo coming on as I tried to follow his movements. Just amazing that he managed to stay upright through the entire performance. I'll bet the rest of the band was relieved when it was time to exit the stage. (Simon Tong is a trip, too: He always looks like he's ready to fall asleep.)

British pop blows away shallow American garbage. Just AMAZING. Urban Hymns couldn't be duplicated on "Forth" unfortunately.

easypeesy, I thought so, too. What's going on with him? (ha: "I always wondered why the Verve split up - and now I know.")
Yeah, I'm not sure, though, that it was McCabe that brought about the split. Richard's rather bloated ego at the time seems more like it.
