When Nomura introduced Zack to Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, I was so surprised while I was playing, that I nearly cried... Or perhaps I did. After I played crisis core, my heart sunk in the end. I died along with Zack as we fought our last battle together. I could no longer play Crisis core after my first playthrough. Man, I never figured I'd get this emotional over a game, let alone a fictional character. Final Fantasy has really changed me. Lets Hope FF Versus XIII isn't a let down.

I believe that it was of a more personal matter. Had Zack not stepped in, Angeal would have done more to force it. He knew how to get Zack to fight him, which was to threaten Aerith, Cloud, and Tseng. Angeal had everything-- except for Hollander, of course-- planned out. It was a more of "Suicide by Student." He knew he had to initiate the fight to the death, or Zack never would have faced him.

Despite what he's done or been forced to do, despite his age, Zack is still only an innocent small town child, barely in his teens and he loved Angeal, maybe not in an 'lovers' or 'brotherly' way, but the man took care of him and put up with his smart-alec ways and in the end Zack appreciated not to mention looked up to the other soldier. Angeal was his hero. Being forced to kill the one you look at as a father let alone look up to can sometimes break you.

As much as I Iike Cloud, I never really did care for Cloud/Aerith. I always thought Tifa would make a better/more understanding partner for Cloud.

BUT I absolutely LOVED Zack/Aerith in Crisis Core. Aerith always struck me as being a normal, cheerful girl, and despite being a SOLDIER, Zack has the personality of a normal, cheerful guy. So it works. :)

It's kinda sad for me to see everyone fighting over who loves aerith more/who aerith loves more. Love is not a "if it's not A, it's B" sort of thing. Love is complex. I think that Aerith loves both Cloud and Zack. Not because she's a player or anything.

She loves Zack. She still keeps that Pink Ribbon he bought for her. She loves Cloud too, you just need to play FF7 to see that. Just because she falls for Cloud after Zack's death doesn't mean she loves Zack any less.

@Verliet427 Actually, Squeenix intended for Cloud's love interest in FF7 to be ambiguous. Which is why the date scene can vary between Aerith, Tifa and Yuffie (Barrett too, but I figure that was for the lulz) Which means that Clerith fans are just as much right as Cloud/Tifa fans.

This is a cut scene from Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core. Zack is crying because he had to kill his close friend and trainer, Angeal. Angeal is the original owner of the Buster Sword, who then gave it to Zack after their fight. Then when Zack dies, he gives the Sword to Cloud and tells Cloud to be his "Living Legacy". Just thought i would summarize it for all of you who had questions. :)

@TheSoner51 I don't think Cloud's character was meant to be they typical hero type, per say. That's kinda the point. He thought he was a hero, a SOLDIER, but he's not. Personally, I think powering through that was the real challenge Cloud had to face. Basically, FF7 is a story about Cloud growing up.

Cloud is such a dork in FF7. I love him. A character doesn't need to be a 'hero' for people to adore them. Sometimes, people adore them for being human.
