A dear close friend of ours who we meet in our local pub every weekend puts this tune on the juke box every time (it's the first tune he puts on, his 'signature'.) Even when we've been sat in the beer garden in the summer, we know he's arrived when we hear the chirpy tones of nut rocker, lol! We've grown to love it now, it's a really catchy little number!
I would like to make y'all aware of a new publication which features thousands of comments from YouTube. It is entitled 'You Are A Tube!' compiled by Steven Fried PLC.
Ali Hazen replaced Ernie Freeman on piano for this B. Bumble & The Stingers hit. The rest of the crew is the same, Tommy Tedesco on guitar, Earl Palmer on drums and Red Callender on bass. This was first recorded earlier in 1962 by Freeman, Palmer & Rene Hall on guitar as Jack B. Nimble and the Quicks on Del-Rio Records 2302.
Kim Fowley has stolen composer credits of this one from a great Russian composer , but so have many many others; Fowley should be better known as a record producer/ arranger; he even worked with classy Finnish rock band Wigwam some 40 years ago, i.e. album Tombstone Valentine; that´s recommeded listening if you´re interested on Nordic / Finnish rock.
May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.
@VinDcator Yes the piano gives this song a magic kindof sound. The boogie piano and the tinny one. Is that a piano or a harpsichord played with the boogie piano?
This originally was Ernie Fields Orchestra - check out "In the Mood"on YouTube by them (1959), with "Christopher Columbus" on the back of that single - true nostalga!
Also look up "Ernie Fields" to find a website you can hear a sample of "Christopher Columbus".
Why doesn't anyone make novelty records anymore? I guess they stopped being novel.
0:54 -- That looks dangerous. I hope someone was standing by with a fire extinguisher -- especially considering how much hairspray girls used in those days!
Rene Hall is very underrated. Can sombody post a picture of him on wiki? Drummer, by the way, is de recently deceased Earl Palmer, also on all Ritchie Valens records - except on live at Pacoima.
Rene solo here is from start to finish a masterpiece!
one of the first records Sid Vicious played bass on. truly an underrated bass player but you can't argue with his performance here. Also, the maraca solo by King Friday XIII is amazing!
Actually the guitar player is Rene Hall. Very unsung player who also discovered Billy Ward & the Dominoes & played guitar on their songs including Sixty Minute Man, Chicken Blues, etc. - Rene also played on Sam Cooke's songs, al the Ritchie Valens songs, Larry Williams, and many more. Al Hazan is playing piano here.
@mutleybird Al Hazan: "While we were actually recording the track, I needed Rene Hall, the guitarist, to signal me when to come in after his solo guitar break, by nodding his head. I asked him to do this because I kept losing track of where I was while we were playing the song. Not only did Rene have to concentrate on his guitar performance but he had to worry about keeping me on track as well. I just faked my way through the whole session but somehow it all worked out."
That is why Youtube and the internet are great. First time I have heard that tune was on Emerson Lake and Palmer Pictures at an Exhibition, back in the early 1970s. Hearing the original is so very enlightening.
I looked up this tune because I was on a website that told you what the number one song in the UK was on the day you were born. Nut Rocker was #1 on the day I was born.
I was 10 years old at the time and taking piano lessons. After I heard this record, the hairs on the back of my neck rose up and I knew it was all worthwhile. Still one of my favourite piano pieces and sooooo ahead of it's time .
I remember when this was in the charts, a mate of ours( there was about six of us just come of the pictures) jumped on the piano in one our local pubs in Beckenham High Street in the U K, and played this, we were thrown out by the rather burly publican, great days ,thanks for posting.
DID YOU KNOW .... this was recorded at the home studio of Jack Jackson (of radio fame) in Maple Cross. His son, Malcolm, produced it. I used to use the studio for my D.J. Demo Tapes
Al Hazan is playing piano. The drummer is Earl Palmer of Phil Spectors "Wrecking Crew" and the guitar player is Tommy Tedesco also of the "Wrecking Crew".
In 1962 this went to #23 in the U.S. and #1 in the U.K.
Tommy Tedesco! Too cool! He was a Heavy-duty session guy throughout the 60 's & 70's......
Love the sound of his guitar & note choices he makes. Hard to believe this was recorded in a home studio- it's got such a cool, live sound to it. This is certainly one of THE great instrumental tracks of the day, right up there with Sleepwalk and Apache.
I'm a musician and producer myself. I'm a big collector of the early instrumental records of the 50's and 60's. I'm also a big surf fan. I have a rare cd release of the first album and I also have a book on older records and it tells the story of the group and the records.
I'll take your word for it JD. My information came from Malcolm Jackson (Jack's son) when I was recording a demo tape at their studio all those many moons ago.
You sound pretty positive about your information, so pleased to put it right. I'll believe anything - someone told me Ringo was a good drummer once!!
