I wish there were a Salome version having a man play that role. Well, that may be a serial killer or psychopath in real life. In real life, they are mostly men, although in art they are mostly women. In any case, this opera is really good; music is really beautiful and the singer is unbelievable.
I remember seeing this the first time, and every time she gets to "das Geheimnis des Todes" and the remainder, I still shiver visibly....In some ways it's so scary because she has such a "girlish" voice, and then goes into that scary chest voice with a little gravel in it...and her sense of timing is extraordinary. By the way - I assume she never did it onstage, but does anyone know for sure?
@MuscleDaddyCMH Nope, pretty sure this was a one-time studio thing for Stratas. Thank goodness Gotz Friedrich had the idea of casting her in the role. Can you imagine being without this performance?
@WiseMonkey888 who interestingly isn't even named in that source. we really know very little about her. we know her name because of Roman historians and that this thing allegedly happened. that's pretty much it.
Teresa Stratas, Astrid Varnay, Bernd Weikl are the artists. This version seems staged for a movie like display. Teresa may not be singing, don't know. Richard Strauss has written the opera of woman's struggles . The subtitles are great. In my opinion its universal drama set to music. The opera is available on Amazon.
A question: was this performed with a different cast and then filmed with another cast and lip-synchronized ? She's not singing.......she's mouthing. If you ever have sung at all, you know that you MUST have the mouth wide open to get that volume.
Still, this actress is the best. The singing is pretty great, too, but I don't know the name of the actual diva.
But even Tetrarch is not synchronized. This is not a live operatic performance.
@90lysander Thanks for informing me that it's Stratas. I'd never seen or worked with her before, so I never knew her voice other than her Lulu. I didn't recognize her. I'd been wondering who had that brilliant and powerful voice. This performance isn't in perfect synchronicity with the recording, but who cares with this much power of delivery. I have never seen a better Salome in my life, and I've seen many.
I'm in Berlin studying German: opera is a great gateway for learning it. Thanks !
@BestAmateurViolinist Under the circumstances, it's perfectly understandable that you weren't sure. A lot of opera films are made this way, with singers miming to their own pre-recorded soundtrack. And yes, Stratas's performance is exceptional: it's not something she'd be able to do in the theater, but on record the smoothness and beauty of the voice are perfect for the role, and of course she looks like a million dollars! All the best.
@BestAmateurViolinist Yeah, this is not a live operatic performance. It's a movie version of the opera and the audio was proably recorded in studio and then put in. There's been other opera that have been like this as well like Il Barbiere Di Siviglia and Rigoletto.
The tiny blossoming leitmotif when she sings "Nein! Doch es schmeckte vielleicht nach Liebe" before falling back into a sinister buzzing is pure genius. It may be weird but it's my favorite part of the opera.
What I find interesting is that, although everyone knows that what Salome did was pure evil, and she's going to Hell for the death of Saint John the Baptist, the music for the aria in which she expresses her love for the severed head, is quite romanticized, grand & beautiful. The Oscar Wilde play also uses flowery and romantic language which is extremely at variance with the evil of the moment. Strauss set the Wilde play to music in the most perfect adaptation of a play into opera.
Exquisite! Someone has politely turned down the volume of the orchestra for Stratas in this recording, so that we can actually hear her sing, or at any rate we can overhear her. This isn't a role she could whisper this way onstage -- she'd be scarcely audible. Nevertheless, her voice brings an intimacy, delicateness, and color to the role that would be impossible otherwise. She's trying to rescue Salome from Strauss.
Don Giovanni is comical the violence is mild at best. She kisses the head of the man she murders. She's crazy. Don Giovanni dies and everyone rejoices. The opening scene gets kind of violent but not near decapitation.
Cheeee!! Faltó masa sonora!! Salomé es Richard Strauss, Postromanticismo, Gran gran orquesta, mucho metal!! No oí eso. Y los timbales?? Faltó orquesta!!
god how i love it when a soprano can do that on "des Todes" and sound really creepy and a bit filthy way down in the basement (and the bit after it about tasting blood) LOL Great - reminds me of Welitsch
Indeed this is the first time that I have seen someone portray Salome as someone capable of loving even if in a twisted way and not just a spoiled brat who always has to get what she wants. The lyrics and music of her final aria express her anger at her spurned feelings, her sorrow at how he never saw the real her underneath the decadent debauchery of her environment, her lust and passionate love that drove her to madness.
WOW!! This production with Stratas is the most iconic of all. This opera is probably the most underappreciated, undervalued and underperformed opera! An opera where Judaeo- Christianity meets Greek tragedy and hair raising Creepshow!
But why regret that it is underperformed..? Now we will have monopoly :-)
I value the Götz / Böhm / Stratas interpretation because it captures the neurotic quality of the religious and erotic obsession quinbessential... Slightly androgynous, silvery timbre and overwhelming dramatic sensibility..
On recordings I don't know that you can beat Nilsson. But this video is truly amazing (I own it) and Stratas's characteriztion of a teenage girl is totally believable and her singing is glorious. Plus there's the extra bonus of Astrid Varnay wringing her hands beautifully as Herodias!
Salome has always been my favorite opera. This filmed opera is extraordinary. Watching all 3 parts of the Final Scene allows the listener-viewer to enjoy the ultimate obsession. Many, many thanks to the poster for this sharing with the world this wonderful video. Strauss music takes one out of this world. It's as if both God and Satan were struggling for Strauss soul when he composed this magnificent work.
Though her voice, obviously, wwas never able to carry this role on stage, Statas makes full use of the studio... this is perhaps the most tender and subtle interpretation of this role I have ever experienced. Instead of the electrification of Mattila's, the madness of Rysanek's, or the strong nobility of Nilsson's (haven't heard Welitsch's yet)- and I most definitely love all of them- here, we have a peculiar teen-aged girl who, unlike the literal Biblical character, truly loved.

Wonderful singing and terrific acting. I like a younger sounding, more lyric Salome (as much as I love the hefty dramatic Salomes). Stratas is great. Her terrifying mixture of innocence and cruelty is thrilling and credible. She sings this monologue in both a romantic and gloomy way, just ideal. Varnay is also terrific! Pity that this is a film, since the lip synching makes it somewhat less "real".
