  • The over modulation of this song is just awful and doesn't do this song the justice it deserves. Sorry, just my opinion....But a great song, tho....

  • Ron, you post the best sounding oldies on Youtube...Your friend Tommy

  • Joe South really was the best at telling like it was and is. There is a great rendition of this song available, Type in Sam of The Baseballs and the big German does it well!

  • Preach on......how true!!!!!

  • Such a great song. I was in high school when it came out. My Daddy loved Joe South's music/songs. Great to hear it again. I can't believe I didn't buy the 45 or the LP back then.

  • He sang them the way it is. Love this post thanks Ron..

  • @007bigrain- you are very welcome!

  • I like Bryan Ferry's cover too..

  • "I feel my temperature rise and then I go for her thighs, and I say 'guacamole in my shoes... guacamole in my shoes...'" - Cheech

  • classic tune.....childhood favorite....

  • I grew up with a mother who did not allow gossip, saying "ugly" things about people (dissing then) or making fun of the less fortunate. If we couldn't say something nice about someone, we said nothing at all. We had to "walk a mile in their shoes." I will forever count my blessings for having had her as a mother. Thanks for uploading this and bringing back some old memories.

  • I came home from three tours in Viet Namn in 1969. I thought the song was about me.

  • @allanstrawn It was

  • This is great. No wonder Elvis liked it and sang it in Vegas.

  • Timeless classic....

  • OMGGGG i thought everyone had forgotten this man and this song. ty rwells for putting this on. In 1970 i was 8, and this was my favorite song.

  • @brgdixon- you are very welcome! Ron

  • @brgdixon I was 18 in 1970, and this was one of MY favorite songs.

  • allright

  • bryan ferry covered this on his ablum "another time another place" 1974..

  • I grew up as a pre-teen in the 60s; teen in the seventies in north Georgia. I remember thinking at the time this song came out how I wished my friends could REALLY hear the song and know that it was coming from ME. So, if people can't hear it now, don't be too disappointed. Many of them weren't listening then, either. Kind of like the song "Vincent" by Don McClean; " they're not listening still. Perhaps they never will." Ah, well. SOME folks listen. I guess that's enough. Great posting. Thanks.

  • @mysunshine413- you are very welcome! Very nice comment! God Bless you, Ron

  • @mysunshine413 Great comment! Fortunately, there are still some of us who are listening. But I'm afraid we are few and far between.

  • RIGHT ON !!!!!

PROBLEM IS THE YOUNG PEOPLE CAN'T HEAR THIS SONG !!!!

EVEN IF THE SONG WAS PLAYING IN THE SAME ROOM AS THEY ARE IN, THEY CAN'T HEAR THIS SONG AND THEY CAN'T SEE YOU OR ME !!!

  • @jimmyd10100 the sunset in SF no long is all irish, it is all asians now. Not that i have anything against asians. But it is just interesting how things change.

  • BOY, THIS SONG IS SO TRUE & A DAM GOOD SONG. wISH WE HAD MORE LIKE EM 2DAY!!!

  • After listening to about a dozen Joe South songs, it just occured to me where Elvis found his 70's Vegas sound.

  • Listened to this playing on the AM radio yesterday and really heard the lyrics....always something how music can tell a timeless tale. Whether 1970 or 2011. Some things never change...Peace.

  • very very well done !

  • the gospel!

  • I have always loved this song. It tends to go hand-and-hand with my sense-of-values.

Joe South was one of the best artists to hail from the South.

  • grew up in san francisco in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. grew up in the sunset district which was mostly irish guys I grew up with. we used to cruise in our hot rods and lisen to this song. the song says it all. this is a brutal world we live in! went in the marines in 1971. I know what the violence is all about and being poor. what I don't like is the people that take kindness for weakness! never under estimate anyone. its all about respect to me.

  • @jimmyd10100- thanks for the great comment! Ron

  • @jimmyd10100 That's right ,I hit the lottery in 1971 too.I went from peaceful Nebraska to all out hell. It is all about respect like my Dad always said "Be careful on which end of the snake you grab " Peace .......

  • @jimmyd10100 I know you commented about two months ago...but you are owed a response from someone out there...so they volunteered me...You are 'aces on'...41 years have passed and this is one of the few soul-hearted songs that say it...'Child of Clay' by Jimmy Rogers fits into that rare closet of music as well...check it out if you haven't already... I wish you the best brother...you know it...you explained it well...

  • @jimmyd10100 Wow .Well said.

  • Myer Melbourne used to sell Shoos brand of children's shoe and the advertisement on TV used this song. It brings back strong memories.

  • @rwells47 I should have said most anything by him is cool !!:)

  • Elvis' version laughs at this version whilst nodding his head and saying "poor child!"

  • Only checked this song out because of a recommendation. Meaningful, positive, and a new favorite. Most of my favorites are 80s Rap, Sublime, Marley, etc., but this is awesome!

  • I love this song. Wouldn't it be great if we all walked a mile in each other's shoes? Maybe there would be more peace in this world. Thanks for sharing.

  • Believe it or not, I vividly remember hearing this song on the radio when it came out--even though I was only FIVE YEARS OLD--and it's stayed in my mind ever since! God bless Joe South for creating such a positive, powerful musical masterpiece which could help shape the character of young and old alike.

  • What a song...

  • Yes, this song is more meaningful today. Listen to his "Games People Play" as well.

  • One of the songs that turned me on to Positive Music aka #Posimusic 30 yrs ago. Lyrics as ebfan41 says are as true today as they ever were. "The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy." ~ Meryl Streep

  • Republicans should listen to this song.

  • May all listen to this song; Democrats, Republicans, Christians, Atheists, Muslims, Jews, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Indians (American & East ), Asians, Shiites, ETC. I think you know what I mean - that, in my opinion, is what the song does.

  • Correct! However, EVERYONE, regardless of their political views, religious affiliation (or non affiliation), nationality, popularity, color, or size should listen to this song.

  • BTW: thanks rwells47. I love these old songs.

  • Freddieboy44- you are welcome! Ron

  • Ya know, I think of Joe South like Bill Watterson. He did what he had to do and didn't stick around and become a commercial cliche. Things may have not worked out exactly that way but I believe it that will be the final summation.

  • Cool--- :-) !!!!!

  • I walked amile in a guys shoes once and he had me arrested

  • Good one! But at least you had alotta sole! Ron

  • I just couldn't help it. I really do love this song. And Joe. Thanks, Robert

  • I hope you didn't make a heel out of yourself.

  • if the world would take this song to heart, well, the song speaks for itself

  • A song for the ages with such relevant words that echo to this day with the most powerful of messages!! Peace and love are the solutions to all that is wrong. We hurt each other and animals and our blessed earth. Walking in someone elses shoes and feeling their pain and suffering and the heavy load they carry, would we then begin to appreciate each other more and start the healing process. Joe South has given us songs that are so powerful in meaning and so touching to the soul!!

  • yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
