Joe South really was the best at telling like it was and is. There is a great rendition of this song available, Type in Sam of The Baseballs and the big German does it well!
Such a great song. I was in high school when it came out. My Daddy loved Joe South's music/songs. Great to hear it again. I can't believe I didn't buy the 45 or the LP back then.
I grew up with a mother who did not allow gossip, saying "ugly" things about people (dissing then) or making fun of the less fortunate. If we couldn't say something nice about someone, we said nothing at all. We had to "walk a mile in their shoes." I will forever count my blessings for having had her as a mother. Thanks for uploading this and bringing back some old memories.
I grew up as a pre-teen in the 60s; teen in the seventies in north Georgia. I remember thinking at the time this song came out how I wished my friends could REALLY hear the song and know that it was coming from ME. So, if people can't hear it now, don't be too disappointed. Many of them weren't listening then, either. Kind of like the song "Vincent" by Don McClean; " they're not listening still. Perhaps they never will." Ah, well. SOME folks listen. I guess that's enough. Great posting. Thanks.
@jimmyd10100 the sunset in SF no long is all irish, it is all asians now. Not that i have anything against asians. But it is just interesting how things change.
Listened to this playing on the AM radio yesterday and really heard the lyrics....always something how music can tell a timeless tale. Whether 1970 or 2011. Some things never change...Peace.
grew up in san francisco in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. grew up in the sunset district which was mostly irish guys I grew up with. we used to cruise in our hot rods and lisen to this song. the song says it all. this is a brutal world we live in! went in the marines in 1971. I know what the violence is all about and being poor. what I don't like is the people that take kindness for weakness! never under estimate anyone. its all about respect to me.
@jimmyd10100 That's right ,I hit the lottery in 1971 too.I went from peaceful Nebraska to all out hell. It is all about respect like my Dad always said "Be careful on which end of the snake you grab " Peace .......
@jimmyd10100 I know you commented about two months ago...but you are owed a response from someone out there...so they volunteered me...You are 'aces on'...41 years have passed and this is one of the few soul-hearted songs that say it...'Child of Clay' by Jimmy Rogers fits into that rare closet of music as well...check it out if you haven't already... I wish you the best brother...you know it...you explained it well...
This is one of the greatest songwriters ever and no one hardly knows or remembers him...a shame...you cannot count all the hits he has written with both hands!!!
@nickatnoon61 Well, glad you agree........ but geez louise, you got a lot of anger going on......... listen to some mellow jazz or anything calmng. ;)
thanks for posting this song.i wore the record out playing it and an old 8 track tape too. i go to church with a bunch of people that joe is singing about. they can't see the wrong they do just the others around them
@rustyspoke Yes I know the type you are talking about. I don't go to church much anymore.......... still believe in a higher power, but think our American Indians had the right idea....:)"
Aw thank you for posting this song........ back in the late 60's I had a 45 of this and just about wore it out !!! ...........')" It fits a lot of situfations....... Thank you .
Only checked this song out because of a recommendation. Meaningful, positive, and a new favorite. Most of my favorites are 80s Rap, Sublime, Marley, etc., but this is awesome!
I love this song. Wouldn't it be great if we all walked a mile in each other's shoes? Maybe there would be more peace in this world. Thanks for sharing.
Such a pleasure. "I may be common people but I'm your brother", a message I needed to hear today. Thanks for putting this up, I also like the visuals you provided. God bless!
Believe it or not, I vividly remember hearing this song on the radio when it came out--even though I was only FIVE YEARS OLD--and it's stayed in my mind ever since! God bless Joe South for creating such a positive, powerful musical masterpiece which could help shape the character of young and old alike.
One of the songs that turned me on to Positive Music aka #Posimusic 30 yrs ago. Lyrics as ebfan41 says are as true today as they ever were. "The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy." ~ Meryl Streep
May all listen to this song; Democrats, Republicans, Christians, Atheists, Muslims, Jews, Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Indians (American & East ), Asians, Shiites, ETC. I think you know what I mean - that, in my opinion, is what the song does.
Correct! However, EVERYONE, regardless of their political views, religious affiliation (or non affiliation), nationality, popularity, color, or size should listen to this song.
Ya know, I think of Joe South like Bill Watterson. He did what he had to do and didn't stick around and become a commercial cliche. Things may have not worked out exactly that way but I believe it that will be the final summation.

The over modulation of this song is just awful and doesn't do this song the justice it deserves. Sorry, just my opinion....But a great song, tho....
