Can't decide with my 77, 4.0 Toyota V8, The Japanese 5.0 V12....or the Australian pushrod V8s that came in the old school Crowns. I want this car to evoke the performance heritage that Toyota was denied by the U.S. import constraints. My good friend was the original owner and thinks it should rock the 4A-GTEU, build it for 9,000 RPM. The car was vandalized by two kids who thought it was a Mustang, and mercilessly kicked the shit out of it in some kind of patriotic protest, took me years to fix.
This is a truly transcendent car!! I have always liked the look of those cars, and you've done it some true justice with this exotic v8 and tranny swap. Triple thumbs up for the build!!!
i just read a car craft mag. talking about how toyota used styling ques from the 1970 FB mustang ford a 1977 Liftback celica, and i must say O_O wow...........
this is a new discovery for me lol, i love old cars, but hate rice burners, but i dont think this qualifies haha, where would i even buy one of those???
Added to playlist Cars, drag racing, dune buggies. Do you have any dashcam videos? Holy shit, I didn't know those had even been made! Looks like they were emulating the American muscle cars.
@mickra28 that's great how an auto manufacturer builds cars good already ....... bought and loved by many......also able to make great and not a typical everyday car that's already great. i seen they said "moving forward".......... haha i think TOYOTA did and said hmmm lets build something great and let the car guy step it up a level.
Thats nice you've done a good job . Was it a mission to do the v8 conversion. Ive got a 76 celica coupe im keen to put a v8 in it but im not sure how much work it will take.
sounds way better than those crap Civics with the muffler extention that sticks out 3 ft. from where the back of the car ends. Beautiful car mickra 28
@70moparbaby Toyota did it deliberately. They modelled these tiny creatures (about the same size as a Mazda MX-5 Miata) on the '69 Fastback Mustang. But this is the first time I've seen one that sounds, and even goes like a Mustang. There's a company in Australia that shoehorns this engine into An MX-5, adds some wild bodywork and a supercharger and calls it the Bullet Roadster.
i have that car except mines year 2000 lol i was wonderin tho is that a import type of car or muscle cause i dunno if import existed back in those days
@WarsOfHell not muscle, that car came with a 4cyl originally, the quad cam v8 might make it muscle but they didn't have those back in the day. There have been people tuning imports since they've been imported, so I guess it's where the tuner imports came from. I have a classic datsun that I've tried to keep a classic modded feel, Mods that would have been done the same back in the day ( Headers, sidedraft, matchbox dizzy , ect). does that make it a tuner import?I dunno, I don't really think so
i have a question for you i have a RA29 and i just put the belt for the smog pump in now the car wont stay at idle when it warms up i been trying to figure out the problem but no one seems to know what the problem is the moter is still stock its a 20 r can u help a fellow celica man out?
its a import this is the first gen of the celica i think not sure but it is one of the first year of the celicas brought to the us i have one and it is still a work in progress
well really anything that is "imported" from another place is an import. back in the day cars like the 2000gt, 280z, etc,,, those were the "import" "muscle Cars"
Unbelievable car! I usually prefer the early 70s Cellys, but I've gotta see more of this. Have you done a writeup or photo slideshow anywhere of your build? Must have been a ton of work. Where do you live?
beauty!
