  • That guy is abusive to his wife AND his daughter. Just look at their faces. Since he attempted to rape Griet I've no doubt he sexually abuses anyone unfortunate enough to live in his household. That's the vibe I get anyway.

  • you painted my wife in dry piss ....ahahaha loved it

  • i feel like half of the book is missing there in this movie....:(

  • oooooooh the wife of vermeer is so beautiful, fantastic, im truly struck with awe

  • @acerflots She is very lovely!

  • is the painting in baroque period ???

  • Oh, it's pronounced Peter? The entire time I was reading the book, I pronounced Pieter's name as "Pe-ay-ter" >_<

  • It almost seems as if Vermeer looks like a cross between Jack Sparrow and Will Turner. Am I not the only one who thinks so?

  • @dizkidliz lol that's exactly what I thought so too xD

  • @dizkidliz I agree. Which reminds me-I wonder how someone like Johnny Depp would have done this role? Not nearly as good as Colin Firth I am sure but he probably would've given it an interesting spin.

  • is that colin firth?

  • @CrAZychicke Yes it is.

  • griet is poor but inteligent , that´s a wonderful virtude on that male world by those times....

  • Its so nice to know different culture..im lucky i never live in such early days..its reaaly full of dont's specially u gotta move so finely, cant even look on mans eyesor stare straight to him,or to the people higher than u..:(

  • @Mharziy05 and THAT is precisely, why those times were so fine!!°

  • oh colin colin..the things u do to me in this movie....so sensual..a painter who sees what a normal person cant see

  • Vermeer portrayed by Colin Firth... am I in heaven?

  • I think scarlett johansen did a great job in depicting the vulnerable life of a young girl as a servant since she is away from home and under scrutiny of those whom she is serving who may forget to treat her as they please. So its not awkwardness but rather cautiousness. I like the scene where she dropped the washcloth at the window to remain the pose so as not to disrupt the artist in his creative thoughts. Subtle humour. Another subtlety is the great number of historical info in how the cultu

  • The whole film is like a moving Vemeer painting, the color, lighting etc.I lived four blocks from The Met. in NYC,I would go daily,it was free and empty in the 50's to about 1963,then it got more and more packed with people,by the 70's it sucked.I miss the place,I've lived in Hawaii 26 years now,the most isolated spot on the globe, furthest from any land mass.I have this film in my collection about 1400 DVD's. I've watched it maybe 20 times.

  • i don't think johansson did a great job...

  • griet is like that briony from atonement...

  • i read the book and never thought that it has a movie, that explained why i see scarlett photo in the book lol

  • this movie seems sad and mistery

  • It's not fair that the rest of the world doesn't speak Dutch! Grietje wouldn't have to be shortened to Griet and lots of things in this film could be understandable when people knew Dutch history! Would have been nice too, if this was shot in Delft only! But noooooo, they had to go to Amsterdam, Damme and somewhere in Luxemburg. Great movie by the way!

  • @gyqz you can know dutch history without speaking dutch and plenty of movies are set in one place but filmed elsewhere

  • @chippyrox OMG I LOVE YOU, I was thinking of the same thing. I'm glad someone agrees.

  • Scarlett Johansson was the perfect person for this role, i cant picture it with anyone else :)

  • These people really suck at pronouncing Dutch names...

  • OMG JUST SPOTTED ROLO WEEKS. haha i saw that he was in this movie on imdb but i could never find him...now i have and im so happy. hehe,Rollo Weeks is my favorite actor and there he is 7:00 farhtest to the right of the screen. yay!!!!!!!! go ROLLO WEEKS

  • why is she sooooooooooooo white

  • @bimskies cuz the real girl was that white, Scarlett is not that white

  • i´d love to witness a dialogue between griet and kstewart...LOL.

still like em both though. plus johansson is not always like this. ;)

  • Pieter is hot, but Vermeer is way way hotter. :)

  • @VictoriaRu29

He does not expect that in the least bit. If girls fall after him it's only because there reminising about the wet shirt. You have to admit, he is very charming and handsome in interviews.

  • wtf with Catharina's hairdo in the dinner scene

  • @scspacesout I have always thought the same thing. That was a BAD hairstyle.

  • I want the master so bad... I see him in my dreams pls somebody help!:D

  • griet is less akward in the moive than in the book

  • @HappyHyperHuggieNinj yeah, she smiles in this movie, i dont recall she smiled much in the book

  • Van Ruijven' comment was really mean and humilliating. "It is almost as if she was thinking"

  • I dont know, I just didn't imagine vermeer as the way he is here.

  • I remember a scene where that pig grabs Griet as she is serving. He yanks her to him in full view of his wife and, I think, daughter. She drops the china plate that she is holding.

  • @scorpietta Later on in the movie, I think, now that I recall.

  • Griet is so awkward! I didn't interpret that from the book!

  • at 9:00 is that a maniquinn or a real woman? O.o

  • DARCY :DDD or at least thats how i associate the painter guy to. haha

  • @emaecho777 hahaha i know right? Love pride and prejudice (:

  • the wife is a horrible woman; nothing likable about her at all. Churns out children and then has little to do with them. Ghastly woman.

  • LOL when i first heard the baby crying i was half asleep and i thought my cat was meowing at me

  • That collar around old grandma's neck reminds me of a papier-mâché resembling a slice of a pineapple (1:07).

  • @rayva1 lmfao!

  • Ugh the rich. So high-strung and boisterous. I love how Tracy depicted Johannes as being a silent man preferring solitude with serene paintings than being a typical rich man enjoying grand parties.

  • The wife has such an obnoxious arrogance. Ick.

  • I like the music and visuals of this movie more than the actual story.. Its like the style of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, in my opinion.

  • those windows are plexiglass... (and they look like it) tsk tsk to the set dresser....

  • I think she is wonderful as Griet here...

  • @shreeyatyagi Yeah. i think that she acts in the same way as Griet should.

  • Am I missing anything by watching this in parts? Is there anything inbetween the parts?

  • i know some people say that this movie is boring but i really like it were learning about this painter in art and that painting there really is so much more to the story thn you know.

  • van ruijvens poor wife emily :( hes so cruel to her and very obviously unfaithful

  • van ruijvens poor wife emily :( hes so cruel to her and very obviously unfaithful

  • @yesaliya

yeah, I realized my mistake a little after I wrote. thanks! :)

  • I just realized- Vermeer is Boromeer From the Lord of the Rings! Ha Ha

Why does Griet not wear her trademark hair kerchief the way she is supposed to anymore?

aaaaaa....look how they just dumped their waste into the streets....

So Griet does bot even have a little sister who dies of the plague or brother in this? So may details missing...what a shame....

  • @ForRussiaWithLove Actually Vermeer is played by Colin Firth, not Sean Bean (who is Boromeer from LOTR). just for info:)

  • love the way colin says stay as you were. his tone is so sexy in that moment

  • Pieter s Scarecrow 4m Batman

  • Griet you are vision milady :)

  • although the movie is good so far....

when i read the book, a far more detailed and better movie played in my mind with the the characters looking all different. but the actress for Griet looks pretty much similar to the painting.

  • quel beau film, chaque scène semble un tableau !

Les mistresses ont l'air de garces cependant ,lol

  • I like Pieter-he's not bad :)

  • @SuperPeach7 Cillian Murphy!

  • @SuperPeach7 though Pieter is in need of a haircut

  • is that Frans sitting on the other side of griets mothers?

  • so many good things to eat

  • the guy that likes greet is a jerk.

  • Poor emily van ruijven

  • the butcher boy who likes scarlett is really cute.

  • he is scarecrow from batman begins.

  • really? O.o

  • yes he is i looked it up on imdb.

  • really? i didnt hear mention of him at all and i didnt see him O.o lol

  • if u look up girl with the pearl earring on imdb and look at the guy who plays pieter (no that is not spelled wrong) and if u click on him the previous movies he has done will have batman begins on the list.

  • Yes, but I expected someone cuter with blonde hair...

  • Where's Agnes? Did they take her out of the movie? How sad.

  • yeah both agness and frans arnt even in the movie

  • i dont know why but i really wish i lived there, the setting is just soooo je ne sais quoi, wonderful...

  • I didn't understand the windows conversation. lol

  • Griet asked the mistress whether she should wash it to which the mistress replied, she need not ask her about such things as her duties. Then Griet adds that washing it might let in the light or change the light and they looked at her with surprise, that she could be so astute for just a maid.

  • Oh, okay. Thanks for clearing that up!

  • her birth celebration dress is ment to be green

they should really stick to the book :D

  • the film has nothing to do with the book uahuhuahuahua

  • griet has the same annoying akwaardness as kristen stewart......

  • @aquafishyum it's part of their character for the movie. the characters in real movie aren't the same as their personality in real life.

  • @aquafishyum Ahahahahahhah, that's funny. xD She does.

  • @aquafishyum My sister thought that was rude but I thought it was completely true. lol.

  • @aquafishyum its not being awkward its thinking about whats she's saying and being sublte and aware and not b;unt and insensitive

  • @aquafishyum but luckily Scarlett knows how to turn it on and off for a role.

  • @aquafishyum `

    Yeah , i agree..

But than at the other hand, kristen has it in every movie.. this actress needed to play like this, because of the type of person she needed to play?

I think she does it brilliant

  • @aquafishyum yeah but at least she has good acting to make up for it.

  • @aquafishyum Dont ever say that.

  • @aquafishyum you are a total bitch. why should someone be harrassed and judged and laughed at or bitched about just because they are akward? It's just cruel and it's bullying. I don't know much about Kristen Stewart but i'm shocked and disgusted at the amount of thumbs up you have recieved. Just shows how horrible people can be.

  • @aquafishyum sorry about my last comment. i think i may have over reacted. i still mean what i said but not quite so harshly.

  • @aquafishyum I guess it is .. "authentic".. since she must be submissive to her masters/mistresses at that period.. Johanson has the ability to act well in a lot of different characters.. She was acting like this because this role demanded it. (submissive/poor/shy/medieval? girl that doesnt have much of a choice but being a maid) Kristen acts the same ALL the time, in all roles she plays, her face expression doesnt change at all.. To me she doesnt want wrinkles.. LOL

  • @aquafishyum have you read the book

    thats how she was

  • @aquafishyum if you're going to criticize, at least try to spell correctly -- oh, and you're wrong, by the way

  • @scribbled309 ----Aquamoron wrote that a year ago, will he or it return?Griet in that caste/class system, was to be subservient with head down. After all that was a good job.History has it's RATS no matter the era.Scarlett is my taste in a woman, looks and personality,so I'm bias.I think her acting is great. In the book and or life, was Vermeer,so pussy whipped ?The bit ch wife, and her mother,Miss Smiley, and the bulldager to be daughter,no wonder he stayed in that room.Scarlett, right on the table yup

  • @aquafishyum Its not annoying really it tells the story and besides whats wrong with being private every other celeb is out there Kirsten is one of the ONLY celebs that keeps her things to her self and is not really into the spotlight.

  • @xPrettyGirlSwaggerx Especially considering the poor thing has numerous rabid fangirls breathing down her neck at any given moment.

  • @aquafishyum That was how women were at the time.

  • @aquafishyum Except for the fact that Scarlett is actually acting and beautiful...-_-

  • the painters wife looks like a doll her face realy looks from that era

  • Is that a compliment or an insult? lol.

  • Who is he in this movie?

  • It's funny how they speaking the Dutch names out! When they say a name, all the times i want to improvers it XD

I hope you understand this, i'm Dutch

  • Yeah I know! You just want to tell the actors that what they are saying is wrong and you want to correct it. :)

  • Im not dutch but i was just curious, what names do they say wrong?? Im not trying to be mean or anything like that:P im just wondering.

  • It's not Wrong, but i will say it on the Dutch way. We have difference languages, and we have an difference articulation. Dutch is not an easy Language to speak and learn.

  • Dutch is a bit similar to German, isn't it?

I am German and can very much understand when you guys are talking. And our pronounciation is similar. We wouldn't pronounce Griet with that English "R"

  • yeah...the dialects like Limburggish for example or Brabant!

  • i think this will be a touching film

  • And the music is really great. Has anyone watched "Painted veil" with Norton? The same composer made music for this film.

  • which one is Fran? sorry, this is my first time watching it.

  • omg your looking for rollo too? i cant tell either :(

  • I love Rollo so much, i wish he would be more obvious.

  • omg me too! hes my absolute favorite actor let alone celebrity! i still cant find him dang! i bet hes soo cute!

  • @Emywaterlily I have seen it on tv a few times. only colin could pull off the long hair look and still seem intense and sexy.

  • Loving this film. Totally awesomnesssssss.

  • @hey1127 it is a good movie but I must admit as good as scarlet johannson is I wouldn't of checked it out if it wasn't for colin. :)

  • good, indeed
