is it me, or for the new series, the lightning sound effect has changed on the names, it kinda spoils it now :/ see the Comic Relief opening, that is the new one.

Strangely this one is supposed to be closer to the original, but somehow feels different. The whole trademark dr who sound (from Delia Derbyshire) doesn't feel real.
@17thSHIT It's closer to the 1981 theme (Peter Howell version) a little faster IMHO. I do think it's brighter and a little happier, which is the feel of the current seasons of the show under Smith's tenure as the Doctor.

@edinburghskeptics Perhaps the title is incorrect for the show, but that fault lies with the BBC- all the official marketing and release of the season refers to it as 'Series Five'. This title is correct by official standards.

Both the previous theme and this one are the best so far. I give this one the edge because it feels a bit darker, edgier and, dare I say, sounds more "fun". The second movement is a nice touch...reminds me somehow of the days when I watched Sir Peter Cushing, William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee all play the good Doctor.

nice choice of the 3d, im so use 2 ppl sayying plasma screen, i almost was about 2 type for u 2 get a 3d, meh...... plus, they inventing a small 3d projection thing so you can wacth it on ur wall, but if they never thought of that and i just thought of it for the 1st time, i claim all rights 2 it if they never thought of it yet
The fifth series was good, but I really want Amy and Rory out of it. Please make them take their sexual activities somewhere else, because all this kissing and slutty assistants just ruins the episodes.
@Gameking53 Very good point but they should keep them in. It's always good having two companions, especially boy and girl, it take sus back to the good old days of Pattrick Troughton. And all the kissing, that's what wrecked Season's 1+2.

I was personally getting tired of the Doctor kissing the companions and more specifically Rose and the Doctor supposedly being an item. I like it better when the Doctor is more of a friend/fatherly figure than a lover. It keeps us remembering he is a many many years older. That's probably also why I liked the Donna/Doctor team - only kissed in life or death.
@Gingrnut DT one was lame, really rubbish, just a bunch of red waves flying around. For 21st Century it was really bad comparing to the 80's where they really made an amazing openning that blew you off your seat. This is much better, and five years with the same openning, it gets boring after a while.
this new series is so much better. i had no interest in 2009's episodes (sorry, but i didn't) but when i saw the first episode of season 5, with the new doctor, new companion, new tardis and new theme tune, i'm lovin it again. I love the current opening
i love this, but i prefered the tardisy going through the vortex bit of the old one better, fav bit if 0:34 onwards, the major key. I LOVE DOCTOR WHO!!! how sad, haha x
@georgercop It's probably one of those they've had to figure out the timing of when to use it in the end credits. First season of the restart they didn't even have the middle eight because I believe whomever composed it didn't want to do it or didn't know how to compose it.
Now, if they'll do an album version of this tune like they did the 2005 theme I'll be happy. This one would be fun to juggle to.
I just wish I could hear an explanation from Murray Gold as to what exactly he was trying to do with this version of the classic theme. Certainly, I like it, but at times, I'm left confused by some of the decisions he's made (such as the downplaying of the opening bass line in favor of this new melody). Still, it's a great addition to the list of versions of the Doctor Who theme.

would be a really good theme if it wasnt following the one before it!! The title video looks too much like a CBBC production imo! Matt Smith has surprised me in being a really good doctor, but just not as good as Tennant, which is no bad thing, because Tennant was beyond excellent!!

I really enjoy this theme now more than I did when I first heard it, it has grown on me. Every Saturday when it booms on the screen it gets me prepared for a good show.
Ok I am getting seriously fed up of the bbc leaving the brillant middle 8 out of the closing credits of the new series. The only episode that actually featured it was 'The Beast Below'. I dont get it, when Murray Gold left it out in the beginning of the first series many fans complained so it was replaced. Why isn't that happening now?!
This theme....it's painful. He did an Ok first theme, then by Voyage of the Damned he'd made it, in my opinion, perfect for what it needed to be. And with this terrible drum beat, lowered bassline, it just...it just doesn't get you in the mood for Doctor who. Also, the extra melody he added at the beginning isn't as good as the one he had in earlier seasons. I think it's still there under the main theme. Still ...that drum beat. The whole point is the DUN DUN DUN of this theme, and its gone!
What I don't understand is that Murray Gold specifically said he would NEVER want to 'touch' the theme, and that he would keep the sonic 'boom' at the end. Both have been lost to an extent. What the hell?
A good series, but I didn't like the Daleks as much as I used to. I don't know why, but it looks as if a big American corporation grabbed the designs and "improved" them. They're overly colourful, commercial looking, over emphasized and obese. They look like something that comes with a happy meal.
@GiratinaofFury: The piece of shit Doctor Who movies (not the TV movie) had technicolour Daleks. Bad example, but they were british. Terry Nation's original Dalek comics had Daleks of varying colours and subsequent spin-offs and continuations of that sort of thing. The colours are due to a wider variety of ranks, that's all. That and tying into the British elections.
I'd prefer this more if they cut down EVEN MORE on the orchestra stuff! The synths are really good in this one compared to the previous series' as this will add more originality to it instead of the current orchestra bandwagon
I've really liked the changes Steven Moffat has made to everything so far in the series, especially the daleks' awesome design. Wonder if the cybermen will have a new design. Hope the cracks storyline is a good one. Really enjoyed it so far.
@jimbo11235813 I hope the cybermen return to a more classic approach, with the guns and all! I'd like to see them in their true original form -- their parallelism with communism was lost come the 70's and 80's when they became robots. They were originally supposed to counter the Dalek's facism. That's why they want to make everyone the same. They were truely horrifying in the 60's. It's a shame their stories were so drawn out, lost, and they looked cheap!

Oh, I do love this new themetune, just as equally as I loved the previous series. That last series had a small metallic edge to this, where this one has a more rounded edge so it doesn't pierce your eyelobes.
I hate everything about the new series exept the new doctor and amy pond. Everything else (new tardis, new logo, new screwdriver, new theme tune etc...) I hate

The logo is 1000X better than the older, the tune is nearly the same, the TARDIS is just better and looks wider and the Screwdriver looks like a real one this time, the other one was a kind of pen with a fucking light... I like it very much but i prefer the new one !
The full theme is really rather good. But the cut down version at the start just doesn't cut it for me. It takes far too long to get to the proper tune.
But its a minor quibble when it comes down to it. The episodes are what matters and they have been fantastic so far. Matt and Karen are both wonderful. I couldn't really ask for much more as a whovian right now.
I only saw 4 episodes of this series like everybody, but DAMN ! I LOVE IT !!! Matt Smith is really good and Karen Gillan is THE perfect companion for the Doctor !
Hate this theme, the one in 1963 and 2005-2010 were much better.

1. The themes good but I think it needs a bit tweaking in some areas.
2. The daleks are good and I like the new design and colour coding but they look like plastic now.
3. The Cybermen really need to have some stories they have hardly been used since the return of the series.
4. I think Matt Smith does a better job than Tennant

For 21st Century it was really bad comparing to the 80's where they really made an amazing openning that blew you off your seat. This is much better, and five years with the same openning, it gets boring after a while.

this new series is so much better. i had no interest in 2009's episodes (sorry, but i didn't) but when i saw the first episode of season 5, with the new doctor, new companion, new tardis and new theme tune, i'm lovin it again. I love the current opening

i love this, but i prefered the tardisy going through the vortex bit of the old one better, fav bit if 0:34 onwards, the major key. I LOVE DOCTOR WHO!!! how sad, haha x

@georgercop It's probably one of those they've had to figure out the timing of when to use it in the end credits. First season of the restart they didn't even have the middle eight because I believe whomever composed it didn't want to do it or didn't know how to compose it.
Now, if they'll do an album version of this tune like they did the 2005 theme I'll be happy. This one would be fun to juggle to.

I just wish I could hear an explanation from Murray Gold as to what exactly he was trying to do with this version of the classic theme. Certainly, I like it, but at times, I'm left confused by some of the decisions he's made (such as the downplaying of the opening bass line in favor of this new melody). Still, it's a great addition to the list of versions of the Doctor Who theme.

would be a really good theme if it wasnt following the one before it!! The title video looks too much like a CBBC production imo! Matt Smith has surprised me in being a really good doctor, but just not as good as Tennant, which is no bad thing, because Tennant was beyond excellent!!

Ok I am getting seriously fed up of the bbc leaving the brillant middle 8 out of the closing credits of the new series. The only episode that actually featured it was 'The Beast Below'. I dont get it, when Murray Gold left it out in the beginning of the first series many fans complained so it was replaced. Why isn't that happening now?!

This theme....it's painful. He did an Ok first theme, then by Voyage of the Damned he'd made it, in my opinion, perfect for what it needed to be. And with this terrible drum beat, lowered bassline, it just...it just doesn't get you in the mood for Doctor who. Also, the extra melody he added at the beginning isn't as good as the one he had in earlier seasons. I think it's still there under the main theme. Still ...that drum beat. The whole point is the DUN DUN DUN of this theme, and its gone!

A good series, but I didn't like the Daleks as much as I used to. I don't know why, but it looks as if a big American corporation grabbed the designs and "improved" them. They're overly colourful, commercial looking, over emphasized and obese. They look like something that comes with a happy meal.

@GiratinaofFury: The piece of shit Doctor Who movies (not the TV movie) had technicolour Daleks. Bad example, but they were british. Terry Nation's original Dalek comics had Daleks of varying colours and subsequent spin-offs and continuations of that sort of thing. The colours are due to a wider variety of ranks, that's all. That and tying into the British elections.

I'd prefer this more if they cut down EVEN MORE on the orchestra stuff! The synths are really good in this one compared to the previous series' as this will add more originality to it instead of the current orchestra bandwagon

I've really liked the changes Steven Moffat has made to everything so far in the series, especially the daleks' awesome design. Wonder if the cybermen will have a new design. Hope the cracks storyline is a good one. Really enjoyed it so far.

I'd like to see them in their true original form -- their parallelism with communism was lost come the 70's and 80's when they became robots. They were originally supposed to counter the Dalek's facism. That's why they want to make everyone the same. They were truely horrifying in the 60's. It's a shame their stories were so drawn out, lost, and they looked cheap!

The old one sounded very adventurous and even a bit.. i dunno.. celtic?
Not saying this one is bad, but i do prefer the last one more.

Oh, I do love this new themetune, just as equally as I loved the previous series. That last series had a small metallic edge to this, where this one has a more rounded edge so it doesn't pierce your eyelobes.

The logo is 1000X better than the older, the tune is nearly the same, the TARDIS is just better and looks wider and the Screwdriver looks like a real one this time, the other one was a kind of pen with a fucking light... The full theme is really rather good. But the cut down version at the start just doesn't cut it for me. It takes far too long to get to the proper tune.
But its a minor quibble when it comes down to it. The episodes are what matters and they have been fantastic so far. Matt and Karen are both wonderful. I couldn't really ask for much more as a whovian right now.
