  • I'm 22, I really want to take this to heart and stop being scared of the world... before I am old, unhappy and filled with regret.

Also, this was written by Mary Schmich.

  • (cont...) If you agree with what I have said, don't thank me for this advice came from kind and generous people like yourself. Spread the word, and if you get the chance, tell the nice gentleman who wrote this song! He has helped me so much through his words, and I wish to repay the favor any way I can!

  • Remembering the compliments and forgetting the insults is hard, but I feel I could offer some advice for those of you who are struggling with this. When someone insults you, if you think it is true-ish, just use it as constructive criticism. Assume they are just trying to help. If they're making it up, it just means they're taking their frustration of other things out on you.

Whether compliments given to you are true or not, it means that person had a good reason to want to make you happy.

  • Seriously!? The "sunscreen" is only to represent how most facts are insignificant to what is truly important in life. It's used to contrast material interest. P.S. this video was an actual graduation speech heard by the musical composer who wrote this to start his music career. Not to sell anything but the truth of getting older. I first heard this when I was 20 and at 40 I understand it differently.

  • I remember when i saw this music video from MTV long time ago...but i liked this song back then and i like it even more now. I think this is one of those songs everyone should hear.

  • Great inspiration to pick up one self.

  • 26 people are vegan straight edge health-hipsters who think the point of this song is to sell you chemical sunscreen

    *facepalm*

  • @datim I am a vegan and I love this video! :)

  • I've watched this ten times in a row. Cant help it!

  • 26 people forgot to wear sunscreen.

  • I just turned 22 today... and just found this.

Refreshing feeling, little cramps in my stomach.

  • Wow. I want all my friends to watch this. Makes you feel, not so bad about life.

  • the poor guy probably got skincancer from tanning, man knowing he'll be dead soon, becmoes often very wise from thinking about his past

  • Sunscreen is a scam proposed by the general population of the elite corporations! sun is bad bla bla, but you can eat and drink fluoride all day no worries....sun gives you vitamins your skin and body needs. too much of anything is bad as it is written in stone, but chems? no thanks! Come on thumbs down bitches

  • The person who wrote this could well be a genius!

  • @crsnvll The guy who wrote this is a writer, which explains the awesomeness.

  • So happy to have this on my iPod.

  • This is a song I need to put on every morning to realize what's important in life!

  • Is this brian tracey. by any chance

  • @deathqb What's up with the racist remark?

  • nice illuminati doctrination. damn I used to love this song

  • I have never received a love letter... :(

  • @Annamisasa

I Love You.. I hope that you find this some day and know that it is true. Love is out there... You will find it when you least expect it. So Love those that don't expect it first. and it will be found by you..

  • It's not 'The Desiderata' but it's still good.

  • Um actually sunscreen CAUSES cancer. lol

  • @MRfullon Suncreen does not cause cancer. Radiation from the sun does. However many of them do not block all radiation and thus do not work efficiently protect you. And they may contain vitamin A, which inreases the rate of cell reproduction, also speeding cells spreading skin cancer.

So choose wisely and do not spend too much time in the sun

  • 21 people "FAILED" at Life

  • My dad told taught me the most important lesson of life. "There are two ways to live life. You can either curse god for what he did not give you and complain, or you can make the most out what you were given and thank him daily for the opportunity to live".

Thank you lord for this opportunity you gave me

  • Where can I watch TLC's waterfalls music video ?

  • De-lite-ful & I'm turning the big 6-0 (no!) this week. Dance everyone!

  • EPIC

  • Anyone know who the background music by?

  • youtube will get old.

  • wow! It's interesting to listen to and realize how much of it is true. Glad I found it on blazle.com

  • OMG I FINALLy found it. I have been nostalgic about this song since FOREVER and I never knew its name. I feel accomplished. Great song!!

  • We all feel these things at some point, to say we don't is silly. But the bottom line is, doesn't this song make you feel better when you do? :)

  • We are all dying from the moment we are born..... it's that we truly LIVE while we are in life that matters

  • this reminds me of my drama class......every morning we look in a book full of little instructions for your life. we pick one every morning.

  • What's the number to that dude. I think i know how to forget insults...

  • anyone who says this song is a lie, it's lying obviously...

  • There's a lot of confused people out there. Baz Luhrmann is an Australian director (with a very Australian accent). He isn't the guy talking and he didn't write it. As others have said, it was actually written by article columnist, Mary Schmich, & was copied and emailed all over the world by an unknown student. Baz got a hold of the email, hired a local actor to record it & put his recently completed version of "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)" with Quindon Tarver in the background.

  • all I can say is live each day as it where your last. always love, forgive and hope the next day you get will be as great as your last. tommarow isn't promised to anyone.

  • I feel like I should listen to this everyday when I wake up.

  • @adamAH64 I LOVE YOU .YOU NEVER NEED A INVITE, I WOULD'NT NOW WHERE TO SEND A LOVE LETTER? IT MIGHT BE READ BY THE WRONG PERSON!

  • I am 22 years old now and I am looking back on photos of myself when I was 16,17,18, it is amazing how fast we get old.

  • @markhope1nz haha yeah, i bet a lot of teenagers must be saying right now "oh no, i'm ugly, i'm fat" they don't know what they're talking about, i mean i hope they say the same thing when they turned 50 and they look back at their photos when they were young ;P No one knows what they got until they lost it

  • was richard nixon noble?

  • @lidleheart God bless you man that was an honest reply.. You will be succesful believe in it and it will arrive at your doorstep

  • brilliant

  • Book of Ecclesiastes of the 21st Century!

  • (:fhdfhj

  • floss...

  • very cool, and worthwhile - nearly all of it.

  • I love this song, haven't heard it in like 10 years... I was feeling really low when I got home because all of my friends are more successful than me, have their own homes and I'm still living with my parents... But you know what, I have a job I enjoy, I have my health and a wonderful partner, I'm only 23... Everything's still ahead of me and I should be grateful that I get along with my parents, I have a fantastic brother... I may not be successful, but I'm working on it, life is good.

  • @liddleheart Its been like 8 years since I last time heard this song and I didnt get the message of the song. Now that I grasp it, I am even emotionally moved as I noticed that I have lived according to some of the advices of the song, and as it gives relief on these harsh times when a hellish amount of work lies ahead :D And its just a damn wonderful song ^^

  • very funny song!!! i love this song!!! holy fuck this is great!!!

  • Love this! lol =)

  • I am a Muslim..

This song (or speech) makes sense in some parts but not in others. As a believer, I am never worried about the future.. I was taught to accept fate with all its goodness and tragedies..doing so is one of the pillars of Islam.. =) I feel alive when I am worshiping God.. and I think that we are all important parts from a bigger story.. One day, existence on Earth will cease.. and the divine test will be over.. Truth will overcome everything..

  • .. the real life will begin after the dream is over.. No matter what we did, we all know what right we did, and all of our short comings.. we will be content with Gods judgment on Judgment Day.. because he is just.. he is ~Justice~.. and the most merciful of all.. he is ~Mercy~.. those who did wrong to humanity will be punished.. nothing is lost.. no one will be missed.. the Divine Scale that dazzled the Angels will weigh all of our deeds.. not an ounce will be missed..

  • .. and hopefully, sadness will become happiness for those who where patient and knew.. and people will accept their final fates.. in the ultimate life.. Therefore, this clip talks about the "miner" life.. which shouldn't worry you too much.. don't overdo your selves with it.. and don’t get caught up with all its false imagery and traps.. be aware of your existence.. and seek peace and harmony..

  • i was told to always remember this song as its called class of 99 the year i left school

  • This sad this song my school sang at the last day of school in 5th grade

  • Inspiring but sadening at the same time

  • I've listened to this many times, inspired. This time, I cried.

  • yeah thank u google ^_^

    lol

one of the best i've ever heard.. it really helped a LOT :))

  • Thank you Google, for helping me find this! haha

  • fantastic

  • Why are people saying this is a mood lifter? When I hear it I feel as if this guy wants to remind me I can die any day, and its ok to be a failure.

  • he's saying to live each moment like your last, and that failure doesn't mean you won't ever succeed again.

He's saying that worrying is futile, and that taking risks is sometimes worth it.

  • you sound like a verry negative person. cheer up!

  • Haha no not at all I'm actually very positive in all I do! But I was just pointing out some people said this song is a moodlifter, when I dont find it as such due to its downtempo and foreboding mood, if anything its the opposite!

  • He is saying just that.

  • Love this.. have it on my MP3 and listen to it when i feel down. Always cheers me up

  • great!!!

reminds me of my english lessons :)

    so much truth in it!

  • get to know your parents.

You dont know how long it will be before theyre gone for good.

That makes me well up inside

  • You're not the only one.....

  • The BEST advice ever received, and when in doubt.. this really helps.

  • if you ever feel down or angry, just listen to this song

  • ditto!

  • I never knew Baz Luhrman made this video. ... Learn something new everyday. :)

  • Oh i remember this. My teacher played this for us at the end of my sophmore year. It's a really good speech.

  • No, you're fishing for attention on a popular public website in which you are fully aware that no one truly cares about your problems. But that's ok, I have acknowledged your existence, which is all you wanted in the first place.

  • @samanthalynn6790 yes and we acknowledge yours.

  • Stop attenion seeking, your life is probably fine and you have a nice husband/ wife and living in a stable home with two kids and a pet dog/cat.

I dont see why you do this because everyone will abuse you because you are trying to make everyone feel sorry for you and grasp your attention but ive noticed you jeramiah85 and i do honestly feel for you feel sorry you having to write on a website to get attention and aswell what is the point.

  • Happy 10 year reunion, fellow class of '99ers. Did you remember to follow the advice?

  • well i don't need the sunscreen soo much cos i tend to stay indoors a lot but i am glad i have taken care of myself in soo many ways. I am unmarried, undivorced, good lungs, heart, still have all my teeth and above all happy with myself. I have nothing to show for my struggles but I have my self respect.

  • Cool story bro.

  • indoors or not, you'll still get affected if you have your windows open, or have any amount of sunlight indoors.

you can look it up if you don't believe me.

  • @RollDeep1000 if you're happy i guess that's what matters. ive seen half of europe in the last four months and still dont feel ive found any purpose and am depressed on a regular basis. so good for you. we all need to find our own way

  • @RollDeep1000 Awesome dude X)

  • people who are voting this video down, don't understand it. This perfectly described the late 90s at the time and just fit wonderfully.

  • best song ever !! so much truth

  • :D nicee

  • The wierd thing is this is really smart!

  • to the g.e.d. class of 1999: there is no sex in the champagne room.

  • I loved this song when it came out...and I havent listened to it in probably 9 years...I think it might have just rechanged my life. Definiatly reminded me of some things I need to remember more often. Its so true its crazy

  • hey everybody I'm from El Salvador Central America I would like to know what's the name of the song that the girl sang.

  • wanted to turn it off but could not - so freakin' true. Had I only known many many years ago! Just great

  • it is a nice video. But i think he was being sarcastic or so with the forget insults and remember compliments bit. Because he mentions himself "if you succeed in doing this. Tell me how" and kind of emphasises that you have to accept the bad with the good, and not only the good.

  • he just means that it's so difficult to forget the insults. we remember an emotional blow more than we remember a compliment, unless it's perfectly timed. whereas insults are always perfectly timed, but in the wrong way lol

  • wow i can't believe how many of you havnt heard of this tune, i used to know it off by heart when i was a young lad.

No wonder i loved it so much wht a powerfull tune!!!!

  • AMAZING!!!

so powerful and beautiful. it really makes you appreciate being alive

  • Very true

  • Heard this on Radio 1, I'd heard it once before from around the middle but that was the first time I'd heard all the way through. Now this is the second. And WOW, the lyrics... just gives me something else to think about while revising for exams, good things though.

  • where can i download the song without the speech?

  • I heard it on radio 1 too, its a fantastic song/lecture and all the advice makes sence and very good to cheer you up if your feeling blue. (b^_^)b

  • so did I! ...on radio one i mean. really inspiring song. im revising at the moment and really struggling with how much these exams are going to define my future and it really cheered me up to hear this. and wow Rattja, thats some great advice, thanks :)

  • heard this on radio 1, today, love this song!

  • This makes me want to cry lol

  • inspiring

but it makes me feel bad

    even if i'm 16

  • @xOEHLALA now you 17,see you next year

  • very good and mindful song.

  • iubire uita-te la minutul 4:38 :D

  • the worry part hits home the most. I worry about everything. I wonder how much time I've wasted already doing that. And 90% of the time you worry for no reason at all.. but I'll add this (about not worrying so much) ; if you

succeed in doing this, tell me how... This is my 5th time watching this today. I haven't heard it in years. Thanks!

  • I know exactly how you feel, it was me a year ago. I do no longer worry much, or sometimes not at all.

What I do is live by the rule that "It will solve itself in the end, somehow"

I do not believe in faith, or karma, but I do feel that everything happens for a reason. Think that everything that happens give you experience that can be useful later =) Just try to do what you think is right.

Feel, evolve, look around you, see the beauty in the world.

    Don't worry, be happy,

  • I admire that and thank you for sharing your experience. Gives me hope that it IS possible to change. =)

  • awesome

    i needed this

    thanks dude

  • I love this. I think its an amazing speech. Who ever the hell wrote this (: bitch would make a hell of a teacher. -.- better then the pedaphiles ive got.

  • I believe we can try as hard as we want to make things happen in our life but in the end our destiny is not determined by ourselves. I believe in a heavenly higher power and if we have questions in our life we should ask the higher power.

  • Best advice around.

  • watch this on shrooms

made me so happyy i cried

  • The race is long, and in the end it's only with yourself.... That is the truth.

  • Every one should listen to this at LEAST once a week.

  • we played this in my yoga class

  • Wrong, you make a conscious decisions to help increase the chances of personal success. i.e having income to take care of yourself or others. Those that CHOSE not to continue with school or spend their money on impulse tend to have more difficulty in life. It's a fact. Also, people know the difference between right and wrong. Those who chose to do the "wrong" things tend to have more difficulty in lift.

  • Awesome song, I love revisiting this wonderful bit of advice.

  • yes you do

  • agreed.

  • Ilike the other version of this "video" a lot more, the one with subtitles in a weird language, with footage of people and stuff

  • 8 thumbs down for writing my opinion. sheeesh!

  • really? how so?

  • @bluelite28 well whatever dude, you still cannot deny this is all true

  • "Do one thing every day what scares you" - what do you, folks, do? Great video!

  • Baz Luhrmann is the guy speaking, but it was written by Mary Schmich, a reporter for the Chicago Tribune in 1997.

She said, "if I was ever asked to give a speech at graduation, THIS is the advice I'd give".

Probably the finest set of advice ever written.

    Well done Mary!

  • "worrying is as affective and trying to solve an algebra problem by chewing gum" So many statements in the song mean so much to me. This is just beautiful.
