There's a thing he does in the turnaround a couple of times that seems like it goes across the bar line...but I don't hear it as a mistake, just his own thing. This is a great version in my book, and if you want to be able to tell the difference between the real deal and a fake, look for a version of this by Stephanie Trick on YouTube. Her playing is flawless, clean, and utterly without soul...
stride isn't about making sure you never make a mistake. who can play perfect anyways? maybe art tatum came close to flawless playing but seriously! and besides there is no "correct" way to play carolina shout, no two people in the world play it exactly the same.
It's a shame to see all this pointless nonsense below but a joy to be able to see Joe Turner play. Forget arguments about his style, he's fantastic, go buy the Joe's Back in Town CD and get over yourselves!
I said nothing about Joe Turner being sloppy, he is one of the greatest greats, so whoever is taking umbrage, go cool off somewhere and get off my boat.
No-one here knows or ever will know what they are talking about when it comes to dealing shit 'bout this kind of shit, this shit 'is the shit' you shits, so just leave it the shit alone and just get the shit along.... oh shit maybe I shoud'nt have said that cos here comes the shit.
What a fantastic stylist! This is probably the best rendition of this on youtube, other than the Johnson and Waller ones, of course! Turner is a little bit sloppy here, and he doesn't always quite make all the notes which he intends to hit, but I wonder how much the piano itself is to blame for this?
@KawhackitaRag: What you mean "sloppy" He was just being himself, so stop comparing him wit' who he isnt, and likewise, aye ok I await the stressed corrections
@vimana19 There's a difference between being yourself and being sloppy. Joe Turner was sloppy. I hope he has other songs that he plays better. Even an amateur version such as mine is cleaner. Goodness.
@vimana19 We're talking about how Joe Turner's playing seems very nonchalant and unenthusiastic compared to masters such as Fats Waller and James P. Johnson.
@josiah566 Well I know what we are talking about, I just don't think those who criticise know what they are talking about. It is utterly pointless making comparisons. Joe Turner was..., well, just Joe Turner and in my view he was as good as Tatum and Waller, take that from someone who can probably play Tatum better than 90% of Tatum spraffers, comparison makers, and spraffing wannabees. I am afraid that includes your good self, sir. Goodness!!
@vimana19 Then if that's the way you want to think then alright. Music isn't meant to be interpreted one singular way anyways. What you think of my version of Carolina Shout matters no more to me than what I think of Joe Turner's.
@KawhackitaRag This is the sloppiest and most disinterested version of Carolina Shout that I've seen/heard on Youtube. It's truly awful. Nothing says "I don't care" quite like playing a 3:00-minute song in 2:10. There are much better versions played by Stephanie Trick (particularly her Switzerland performance) and Bernd Lhotzky.
One of the greats who unfortunately is largely forgotten today. I have a couple of his recordings. He was great and knew all of the greats of his generation (Art Tatum, Fats waller, Williw "the Lion" Smith, etc) before moving to Europe.
A bit messy, IMO.

No recorded version beats the 1921 recording (1921-1926 LP), although I like this too. He plays it in his own kind of funky way.
