When i played the bass just for 3 months when i was 15 years old this came on the television. I taped it on video and the tape broke because i watched it too much!! Thanx for posting!
@Pinstripedtie yes because music is ALL about how fast you waggle your fingers and has NOTHING to do with playing what you feel and making a great sound, isnt that right? Any other amazing insights you wanna add?
Bootsy's a groove player. He doesn't need to show off any overly fast or fancy technique; he knows what the funk's about! I never knew bass could be sexy until I heard "I'd Rather Be WIth You." Bootsy's a true innovator, not just another dime-a-dozen technique player.
@jedimind24 I dont mean to bash. sorry for coming off harsh. the 'secret' really is to just listen and keep at it. tab really are worthless. hit me up if you're interested in some mini-lessons or help. a'ight? peace
@jedimind24 WHY WOULD YOU EVEN WANT TABS FOR THIS???? This music is about LISTENING.....and in this "lucky" modern age..WATCHING. Tabs get you sent to purgatory.
I believe he's vocalising to help him figure out the "upstrokes" because there's no drummer there. Well I'm from a guitar background, but I play the funk on that bass too. It's like "vocal the down note", then play the up note if you break each note down to sixteenths. "ooh" don't play "uhh" pluck that note.
Hey man, its hard to explain, I'm tipsy and my work alarm went off on my day off.
The secret is....You have to have a serious love relationship with your instrument of choice. He's talking sweetness to his his bass...He's happy as hell with it beyond what you and I could ever imagine probably. Now get together with some other funksters who also have that same passion, and thats how we get to enjoy the likes of superstars like Boosty,George,Roger,Rick James...etc. Simply amazing to me when I'm listening to their music.Peace all.
Check out the YouTube video titled "Red Hot Chili Peppers with Bootsy Collins." Pay special attention to the wide-eyed adulation on Flea's face. And remember that RHCP's early album, "Freaky Styley", was produced by P-Funk legend George Clinton. If RHCP hates this kind of music, why did they play with Bootsy and work with George?
ahaaa.... no they don't. perhaps you should get your head out of your butt and realise they did some funky stuff in their earlier days, and not only the soft stuff they play today.
bootsy with James Brown literally invented funk..Ala 'Sex Machine'etc .Jimi Hendrix wasn't the cleanest player either, but a genius all the same..like bootsy.
I dont find hendrix to be a sloppy player... I could somewhat see where you get that idea though but i still believe he wasnt enough to be called sloppy. Jimi page, now that guy i definitely consider sloppy.
I remember watching this many years ago on rockschool, i laughed my ass off then and still do now when i watch this clip, Bootsy is awesome, larger than life, you either have "the funk" or you dont and Bootsy has it in spade fulls. Larry Graham is awesome too, need to find some old GCS stuff its been too long.

well i firmly believe that the talent this indiviual lacks is that of what a bass player needs in order to be considered a bass player. this is truely funky in every sense of the word. even the multitude of after market effects that helps make up for lack of talent doesn't do the trick in this instance. this is exactly the same as considerig david hasselhoff a very good actor. the very thought is extremely preposterous. prostate cancer examinations are more pleasant. thank you and good bye.

no i amn't. you're the one who isn't very smart. i can assure you that my head is tilted and an eyebrow is raised and my arms are definitely crossed with a very unpleasant look on my face. and in a minute i can almost guarantee you that i will start tapping my foot in disapproval.
comparing Victor Wooten to Bootsy is like comparing a hamburger to a big thick juicy steak. Stanley Clark, Stuart Hamm, Marcus Miller, MarloweDK, Les Claypool, and Larry Graham. look up some of these guy's videos on YouTube and then come back and give me your opinion on where Bootsy stands with these guys.
now you're getting into rock and roll. there's Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Geddy Lee from Rush, Chris squire from Yes, Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and many more. these are all great bass players as well but play a different genre of music.
Well, I wasn't comparing the two, but since you mentioned it...
Les Claypool, Marcus, Victor, Oteil Burbridge, etc. etc. usually mention Bootsy as an influence. Bootsy usually lists Stanley Clarke and Larry Graham as major influences. They all respect each other and have worked together. Stu Hamm is a little different, but I'm sure he's met Bootsy and is familiar with his work.
After all, the fact still stands that Victor was supremely excited to work with Bootsy.

Victor is a great bass player but obviously on drugs or just very polite. how could someone who is so much better than someone else be so excited to work with that individual ? i don't get it.

oh i wouldn't doubt it. if you're a bass player and you haven't hit the big scene yet, playing with someone who has would be awesome. but once again, Victor and been there and done that. not only that but has done it on a level that's not even touchable by Bootsy. i'm a bass player myself and i can't compare myself to Bootsy but i don't use him as any inspiration. Victor drops my jaw ever time i hear him. he never ceases to amaze me. and very humble at that. now that's impressive.
I've played with some big names before.. Oteil Burbridge, Keith Horne, Paul Henson (who wrote several for Oteil), etc.. It's never been anything big, but just sitting around and jamming. At any rate, if I had a chance to jam with Flea, Robert Trujillo, or John Myung, I would, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it. However, if I knew Bootsy wanted to jam, I'd go anywhere that I had to.
I can see your not a fan of Bootsy. Victor was excited to play with Bootsy, because Bootsy is one of Victor's idols. I'm a bass player myself. I wish i could play with Bootsy. Bootsy's style had classical trained cats like George Duke, and Stanley Clarke trying to copy him. Listen to "Reach For It, Dukey Stick and Slowdance. Parliament,Funkadelic would not have reached high levels if it hadn't been for Bootsy. Victor may be better than Bootsy, but not funkier and he's very humble too.
Man,the only guy you've mentioned that plays in the same league as Bootsy is Larry Graham:he's a Funk musician who plays(and write)SONGS;there are 2 keys elements in there:the first one is funk & to be funky ,it has to be dirty(the exact opposite of Stuart Hamm).the second element is the SONG;Bootsy(& Larry) have played on worlwide known SONGS.Stanley or Marcus used to be funky in the 70's,Victor can be funky but he doesn't play funk music and Marlowe is just a funk cover bass player...
Yeah, you hit the nail on the head there with the "it has to be dirty". A good funk bassline's almost sleazy, and can cause involuntary movemtn of the hips.
thats cool, i remember i taped it once on a sound tape. a friend of me had it on video back in early 90's. i havent seen this ever since and was very surprised to find it here.
