  • Very groove, very funk!

  • I'm not joking, this one video influenced about 80% of my bass playing when I'm playin' some funky stuff

  • @berend1burg Definitely 0:15 ;) ...

  • I want my freakin bass guitare and play it like Bootsy!

  • funk masterss

  • @Pinstripedtie jalous u can't be funky?

  • @Pinstripedtie ..............

  • @Pinstripedtie you are like the dumbest human alive

  • @Pinstripedtie

Listen to his James Brown stuff that's straight bass

  • @Pinstripedtie yes because music is ALL about how fast you waggle your fingers and has NOTHING to do with playing what you feel and making a great sound, isnt that right? Any other amazing insights you wanna add?

  • That guy is funk to the fibre!

  • Can you hear mah drummer? NAW... can't hear him

  • CAN YOU HEAR MY DRUM!?

  • I am very interested in having the seris on DVD that you have. Where can I get them?

  • This is badass, im just now getting into Funk music.

  • Hahahaha Bootsy is really feeling it !!!

    Listen to his words hahahaha

  • can you hear my drummer hahahahahahahahaha

  • Is he saying baby but just pronouncing it weird? cause it sounds like he's saying "bobble"

  • bootsy is the funk

  • Nice clip - seems I remember seeing Rock School clips and BC way back, in the mid - 80's? Is this from that era? Great video - thanks!

  • Bootsy's a groove player. He doesn't need to show off any overly fast or fancy technique; he knows what the funk's about! I never knew bass could be sexy until I heard "I'd Rather Be WIth You." Bootsy's a true innovator, not just another dime-a-dozen technique player.

  • ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO GET TABS FOR THIS

  • @jedimind24 your ears man, your ears.

  • @jedimind24 learn to play properly then you won't need tabs. The only good thing tabs are good for is smoking

  • he's playing part of a bigger song... it's called "Tear The Roof Off That Sucker (Give Up The Funk) - by Parliament" also kown as "Give up the funk"

google that along with the word "TAB" and you should be all set i assume :)

  • well thanks for actually helping out instead of just bashing me for not being able to learn by ear :)

  • @jedimind24 I dont mean to bash. sorry for coming off harsh. the 'secret' really is to just listen and keep at it. tab really are worthless. hit me up if you're interested in some mini-lessons or help. a'ight? peace

  • @jedimind24 WHY WOULD YOU EVEN WANT TABS FOR THIS???? This music is about LISTENING.....and in this "lucky" modern age..WATCHING. Tabs get you sent to purgatory.

  • i have the whole episode i recorded it when it was first shown on tv.I have 4 other episodes as well

  • well can you send it to me. please lol

  • liquid, drippy, greasy fonk

  • I can hear his drums and I'm only 1/8th as cool and funky.

  • I believe he's vocalising to help him figure out the "upstrokes" because there's no drummer there. Well I'm from a guitar background, but I play the funk on that bass too. It's like "vocal the down note", then play the up note if you break each note down to sixteenths. "ooh" don't play "uhh" pluck that note.

Hey man, its hard to explain, I'm tipsy and my work alarm went off on my day off.

  • i love this guy he so cool when he play he's like " uh" " well alrigh" " uh huh" lol so fucking awesome

  • "Can you hear my drummer ! "

    Great stuff!

  • still have the whole of this series on vhs(now transfered to dvd) if anyone is interested!!!!

  • Yes, I am ver interested. Please get in touch!

  • Dude if you have the Whole thing then please contact me ,I want this!

  • @caistervet I want a copy of this joint right here

  • He uses something similar to an "envelope filter" but yea I'm sure it works with the electric

  • does anyone know what effect he is using? and does it work just as well on electric guitar

  • He uses a Mu-Tron, made by musitronics company. That pedal has been discontinued, unfortunely.

  • 0:15 Right!

  • The secret is....You have to have a serious love relationship with your instrument of choice. He's talking sweetness to his his bass...He's happy as hell with it beyond what you and I could ever imagine probably. Now get together with some other funksters who also have that same passion, and thats how we get to enjoy the likes of superstars like Boosty,George,Roger,Rick James...etc. Simply amazing to me when I'm listening to their music.Peace all.

  • lol, nice effect

  • i love that setting. like this synth talk thingy i have its so good.

  • what that a mutron phazer he got, funk is definately delicious

  • If one could have sex with a bass - this would be it... dang - he feels it... I can smell the funk! yeah baby -ah huh

  • it's gotta be the glasses.

  • WE WANT THE FUNK!!!!

  • Thats Amazing!

  • '''aint nuttin but a party baby, yeah''

    Great

  • FUNK!!! Just funky...

  • This guy Rocks!!!!!!!

  • Bootsy rules, RHCP rules, George rules! the end!

  • Comment removed

  • mothership connection, this is starchild, citizens of the universe

  • Check out the YouTube video titled "Red Hot Chili Peppers with Bootsy Collins." Pay special attention to the wide-eyed adulation on Flea's face. And remember that RHCP's early album, "Freaky Styley", was produced by P-Funk legend George Clinton. If RHCP hates this kind of music, why did they play with Bootsy and work with George?

  • old times ....people change and sometimes lie

  • red hot chili peppers were watching this in an interview.

  • haha I've been taken serously LOL

Bootsy is their insperation like James Brouwn.

    Never heard of sarcasm???

    Ges not haha :-)

  • ahaaa.... no they don't. perhaps you should get your head out of your butt and realise they did some funky stuff in their earlier days, and not only the soft stuff they play today.

  • dude, this is all they fucking listened to and played before they got their big break. THEY LOVE THIS SHIT.

  • They don't "hate"any kind of music I assure you.

  • @SLAPnPOP726

yeah dude i saw that, flea was like "i just realize now how much i copy that shit"

flea and bootsy are some of my favorite bassists

  • @skullncrossbones365 haha yeah, mine too. Flea is why I picked up the bass.

  • @SLAPnPOP726 which inspired them.

  • This is funking amazing.

  • The master of funk bass yeahhh uh huh

  • ever funkin on babah yeahba dabba doo baaaaaaba

  • "Yeah - Uh huh. Huh!"

    Love it!

  • i love funk

  • RIGHT! man I love him, all his happiness

    keep on funkin' bootsilla!

  • that's the greatest song I ever heard . Rock on mr Zilla

  • I LOVE THAT GUY!!!!!!!!

  • that's funk ma man

  • bootsy with James Brown literally invented funk..Ala 'Sex Machine'etc .Jimi Hendrix wasn't the cleanest player either, but a genius all the same..like bootsy.

  • I dont find hendrix to be a sloppy player... I could somewhat see where you get that idea though but i still believe he wasnt enough to be called sloppy. Jimi page, now that guy i definitely consider sloppy.

  • red hot chili peppers watched this video :P haha so funky :D

  • with flea's big grinning face!

  • his funk goes to 11 \m/

  • Funk that! His Funk Funks all the way to Funk!

  • nice comment regal :D

  • Jesus H Christ, so much funk comes out of that man that listening to him almost puts me in a coma.

Bootsy Collins so funky that he talks in morse code to animals. And they can dig it.

  • @mexicanmetalhead31 well said homie

  • i wish i was alive to see this man play live but all i got is youtube and storys that my parents tell me about him

  • why? does he not play live anymore??

  • he still does play live

  • he still plays live i saw him perform like less than a year ago

  • Awesome

  • i wish i had those glasses

  • "Ain't nothin but a party baby"

  • That's funk !

    Nice vid

  • I remember watching this many years ago on rockschool, i laughed my ass off then and still do now when i watch this clip, Bootsy is awesome, larger than life, you either have "the funk" or you dont and Bootsy has it in spade fulls. Larry Graham is awesome too, need to find some old GCS stuff its been too long.

  • crazy brother love it funkadelica

  • Fucking AMAZING.

  • bootsy lays down the tastiest funk riffs ever

  • oh yeah ?

  • you're a dumbass

  • Well, you're entitled to your opinion...

But I remember a video of Victor Wooten talking about how excited he was when he got to work with Bootsy.

You should be jealous that it wasn't you.

  • comparing Victor Wooten to Bootsy is like comparing a hamburger to a big thick juicy steak. Stanley Clark, Stuart Hamm, Marcus Miller, MarloweDK, Les Claypool, and Larry Graham. look up some of these guy's videos on YouTube and then come back and give me your opinion on where Bootsy stands with these guys.

  • I put one bassist above Collins: John Entwistle. I'm familiar with all your listed bassists and the only one I'm realy impressed with is Graham

  • now you're getting into rock and roll. there's Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Geddy Lee from Rush, Chris squire from Yes, Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and many more. these are all great bass players as well but play a different genre of music.

  • Well, I wasn't comparing the two, but since you mentioned it...

Les Claypool, Marcus, Victor, Oteil Burbridge, etc. etc. usually mention Bootsy as an influence. Bootsy usually lists Stanley Clarke and Larry Graham as major influences. They all respect each other and have worked together. Stu Hamm is a little different, but I'm sure he's met Bootsy and is familiar with his work.

After all, the fact still stands that Victor was supremely excited to work with Bootsy.

  • I highly doubt Victor is on drugs. I'd give my middle nut to work with Bootsy.

  • I've played with some big names before.. Oteil Burbridge, Keith Horne, Paul Henson (who wrote several for Oteil), etc.. It's never been anything big, but just sitting around and jamming. At any rate, if I had a chance to jam with Flea, Robert Trujillo, or John Myung, I would, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it. However, if I knew Bootsy wanted to jam, I'd go anywhere that I had to.

  • I can see your not a fan of Bootsy. Victor was excited to play with Bootsy, because Bootsy is one of Victor's idols. I'm a bass player myself. I wish i could play with Bootsy. Bootsy's style had classical trained cats like George Duke, and Stanley Clarke trying to copy him. Listen to "Reach For It, Dukey Stick and Slowdance. Parliament,Funkadelic would not have reached high levels if it hadn't been for Bootsy. Victor may be better than Bootsy, but not funkier and he's very humble too.

  • Man,the only guy you've mentioned that plays in the same league as Bootsy is Larry Graham:he's a Funk musician who plays(and write)SONGS;there are 2 keys elements in there:the first one is funk & to be funky ,it has to be dirty(the exact opposite of Stuart Hamm).the second element is the SONG;Bootsy(& Larry) have played on worlwide known SONGS.Stanley or Marcus used to be funky in the 70's,Victor can be funky but he doesn't play funk music and Marlowe is just a funk cover bass player...

  • Yeah, you hit the nail on the head there with the "it has to be dirty". A good funk bassline's almost sleazy, and can cause involuntary movemtn of the hips.

  • That's what we call "Tennis shoe stankin' funk"

  • Must be sick to jam with him ^__^ ...

  • i bet he did toejam n earl

  • hahaha you gotta love this man =D damn funky and fuckin funny to =D=D

  • Get It!!!

  • ...right...

    I love bootsy!

  • shit!!!

  • Funk-rock I would rather say. but it´s damn nice =)

  • thats cool, i remember i taped it once on a sound tape. a friend of me had it on video back in early 90's. i havent seen this ever since and was very surprised to find it here.

i remember there was not much bootsy funk in that episode, theres another part where he explains the "on the one", its only 10 seconds. i have it on the same sound tape. if ever i will find that tape again i will send you a link. i cant promise, i trashed the tape in a box somewhere wih 400 other tapes in teh basement.

  • i remember the rock school... it was a british production in the late 80's . try bbc ?

  • MAN! Anybody got this full episode if so fuckin upload that shit!

  • yes, today it is funk school.

Rockschool was a tv show in the early 80's that showed you how to play a different style of music every episode. Bootsy was on the FUNK episode, which remains my favorite one!

    Can you hear my drummer?

  • haha "can you hear the drummer, oh you cant hear him heheh?"

  • das duh funk rite there bro!!

  • rockschool? more like funkschool

  • DAMMMMNNN Bootsy IS da funk.

  • Uh uh... Right... Ok... so classsssss

  • i think i should start a church in his name

  • do it!!!

  • i think i will lol would u like 2 be a minister at the Church of the Funk?

  • I second that request lol

  • does he slap sometimes?

  • yes! he does, otherwise he would not get that sound..!

  • he always looks very happy. kind of positive person :)

  • that's cose he's always high ^_^
