  • Does anybody know the names pf the background singer/tambourine players. They're awesome throughout the whole concert.

  • Tom Petty is a legend.

  • Oh I was born a Midwestern... And I can even feel the American Spirit that this song gives off.. Its a vibe for the human soul..

  • They used this song on King of the Hill when Kahn turned REDNECK... Hell yeah! My fav episode...

  • FlufMaster101:

That's probably because Tom does the voice of Lucky.

  • @hikeswitheyes Tom saved the last few seasons of King of the Hill.. they wouldn't of been without him...

  • honey dont walk out

  • @superabound2 one, he doesn't live there, he was just born there, two, trying that hard to rebel makes you a faggot.

  • this live version blows me away. amazing.

  • Probably my favorite song from Tom Petty, other then "The golden rose" . I grew up listening to Tom Petty. he's an under-appreciated song writer and musician for sure. he's produced alot of great hits. not to mention he stood up to the music companies over his music. It's too bad theres not more musicians like him, creating good music. And standing up for what they believe in. He inspired me to get into music.

  • At 1:41 that cracks me up. Three brass guys snapping fingers. Who can even hear that?

  • Stan IS the man!....Stan Lynch

  • Comment removed

  • Idiots. Just groove to the damn music!

  • Epic.

  • Ah that girl hugged him:\

  • I saw this back in the 80's on MTV. OUTSTANDING !!! He created an uproar with the Confederate Flag. Too bad! I'm an honorary southerner....daddy was from the south. I will retire and die there, too! God Bless the South!

  • King of the Hill just brought me here.

  • AMERICAN BY BIRTH SOUTHERN BY THE GRACE OF GOD!!!

  • rebel born rebel bred when i die ill b a rebel dead

  • I am a drummer and a lifelong Tom Petty fan -- chills run down my spine everytime at 5:42

  • @cwSHOSHONEcw as you might see in my name, i married a Welsh man. I am Cherokee, I don't have my picture up yet, and if you knew me on facebook, or in person, you would know. However, I was raised white. Hope that clears that up for you.

  • my theme song-one foot in the grave and one foot on the pedal! live free or die!!!

  • CLICK ON: disccentury, MY MUSIC, NEVER SEEN

  • 2 people weren't born rebels.

  • i was selling the brittish cotton in 1859,like 40 years after 1812...i was born a rebal....

  • God, I wish I was Tom Petty's groupie.

  • Not only is this an awesome song, but somehow don't ya know, Tom has a good point here!

  • Wow, here is the song I have been looking for a long time!!!!!! I didn't know the title. I heard it played in the EFN Radio, in Japan.

Glad I found this, at last after checking more than 20th something of Tom Petty's songs!! I am blessed, hehe ... TFS!! I am really grateful found this song here.!! GBU!!

  • Come on Tom get on the plane with the rest of the band and come back to play in the UK

  • I miss Stan. He was one of my favorite drummers.

  • fantastic

  • i love this song and im from the north of england

  • @sichalmers92 Ditto! I love this song and i'm from manchester!

  • Jesse Jackass would not like this video.

  • Me too Tom, and damn proud of it. God bless Dixie forever.

  • according to this song Italy is down under

  • PROUD TO BE SOUTHERN!!!

  • he's so good

  • let me say this after reading all these comments about racism everyone is entitled to like who they want and dislike who they want im not saying its ok to cause harm to who you dislike but its ok to dislike someone for acting like a fool in your eyes. im from far north where most people accept eachother and im not most people there are certain kinds of people i dont like but at the same time i keep my thoughts and actions to myself and there is nothing wrong with that and tom is no liberal !!!

  • Im from the D, and LOVE being a Rebel inside! Nothing Racist about it! Tom Petty is NO LIberal..... fo sho. Tom Petty Rocks!!!!!

  • Anyone that feels the South fought a war over them, have a mighty high opinion of themselves!

  • to the people that are bringing up the plantation owners in the 1800's, DAMMIT, I am a Native American Cherokee, and if I don't take offense, and my people don't take offense, then maybe you should stop making something out of nothing. Tom and the Heartbreakers are great. STILL ARE ROCKING ME!

  • @MultiReesy1 thank you, music is an art and tom is from the deep south thats not to say anything about his political views it is well known he is liberal. also he is a quarter full cherokee :)

  • @MultiReesy1 LOL, i hear white people all the time say they are cherokee. Its funny because i can never tell if they are really one online but i can tell in person, and i still haven't met a real cherokee on the street yet. I go to pow-wows here in Texas because i'm a real Indian as you can see in my user name (Shoshone) pow-wows are the only place i've met real cherokees. I am only 1/4, my father is 1/2 and my grandmother was a full blood. I 'm not saying you are lying but i get alot of liars.

  • the confederate flat is NOT A SYMBOL FOR SLAVERY. its a FLAG, that's it! it's 2011, get over it and grow up

  • excuse me, BUT GROW UP. it's a flag, it doesn't stand for slavery!

  • @ihateusernames301 I was actually about to dislike this, simply because I was let down by Tom Petty's singing. I had heard the version used on King of the Hill first.

Sometimes there are some good reasons to dislike a video of a good song.

  • @13heavymetal What was wrong with his singing? it was pretty spot on.

  • the one dislike was a the biggest rebel

  • Yah, Tom's a racist, ha, a jewish bass player and a black back-up singer. Who, by the way, was digging the song as much as Petty.

  • @cambro64 I agree its stupid to see a confederate flag and automatically assume racism is afoot. But just having a Black back-up singer doesn't really mean the contrary.

  • @13heavymetal You forgot the Jewish bass player. Trust me, I know a few "racists" in my area and they wouldn't have a black vocalist or Jewish player anywhere near them. Just sayin'.

  • @cambro64 Yeah but at the same time, the most racist plantation owner in the 1950's would be in the presence of house slaves pretty often.

  • @13heavymetal There are so many things wrong with your statement but I won't get into that, suffice to say we have spent WAY too much time on this stupidity already. GREAT song from a GREAT songwriter and GREAT humanatrian and NOTHING more need to be said. Slavery aside, may there always be Rebels barking at the gates of the pwerful.

  • @cambro64 Yeah, I reread that. MAJOR typo. I meant 1850's.

And yes, all arguments aside, this really is a great song.

  • Funny thing about history, the winners write the text books. A few years back while visiting "Dixie" I asked an old timer about the Civil War. Long story short there was a lot more than just slavery behind it. That seems to be the self righteous spin put on it after the fact by the Yankees. Southerners have the right to their heritage just as much as anybody else. Be proud.

  • @SmokeScreen009 There was a hell of a lot more than just slavery behind it. We're taught that here in Massachusetts, so don't think its some big mystery.

  • Gotta love smokin that Gainesville green.

  • True Americans were all born Rebels! This is who we are. Defiant to the end. I love being a rebel!!

  • @RDBeatnik I was born and raised in Jacksonville Florida. I hate it in my heart when people voice their sentiments at odds with the life they live.(Also what is this song about ? Its about being a rebel)

  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are incredible live!!! I saw this concert it was one of my second TP concerts and I have seen them several times since, Love them!!!

  • I was born in the South and I will die in the South. I was born in Dixie and I will die In Dixie. I was born a Rebel and I will die a Rebel.

  • @rbertagopetah13 A rebel wouldn't brag about being a rebel. He wouldn't need to.

  • @rbertagopetah13 DEO VINDICE , AIDE TOI ET DIEU T' AIDERA

  • that flag doesnt HATE anyone-its a symbol for the place we love

  • Even before my father's father, they called us all rebels, as they burned our corn fields and left our cities in ruble. I can still feel the eyes of those blue belled devils, as I am walking around tonight, though the concrete and metal. [><] SCVdotorg

  • Excellent tune, love this so much, sounds so liberating... HEY HEY HEY!

  • Tom Petty had the best pair of backup singers ever for this tour. Pat Peterson was built like a brick shithouse. Carroll Sue Hill was flat as a pancake, but had a cute face and great '80s hair. And most importantly, both could sing.

  • One person apparently wasn't born to rebel.

  • I like how there's a confederate flag hanging up and one of the backup singers is black.

  • @c0rnp0p5 Her name is Pat Peterson and she is awesome.

  • @c0rnp0p5

    confederate flag represents southern states.

its nickname is the "rebel" flag.

it was originated during racist times but it does not show racism today.

    just represents the southern lifestyle.

  • I Love Benmont Tench rockin' out at the piano!!

  • Hey, lets sent this to the Middle East, for incouragement?

  • Rebel 'til I die :)

  • For all of you liberal weenies who are worried about the Confederate flag, please refer to 4:19 in this clip.

  • @kaohsiung99 She may not be getting paid to perform... Lol jks.

  • @kaohsiung99 I'm not from the south. In fact I'm from Canada. I consider myself a liberal. But, I really don't get offended by the Confederate flag. I know it's not a racists symbol.

  • @kaohsiung99 LOL

  • @kaohsiung99 Agree! FUCK LIBERALS!

  • @Buddhist2k Tom Petty is a liberal you retard. Thats part of why hes a rebel--a liberal that lives in the deeply conservative south. A conservative that lives in the south isnt a rebel, hes a follower.

  • There are some songs that sound better to me "live" than the studio version, and this is one of them. Nice effort by Petty and his band. Steve

  • who's the one fucker who disliked this awesomeness

  • @KZBProductionCo An ass licker.

  • I know I'll catch flack from fellow TP&H fans, but I have to say this:

This performance and tour marked the peak for this band, period. With Stan Lynch behind the kit, they had a raw, sledgehammer groove and fire in their guts. This performance is on fire! (When they replaced Lynch with Ferrone, the groove was gone).

Ever since TP did Fool Moon Fever, it seems like his song writing have devolved into music that was the result of smoking too many joints before picking up a guitar.

  • @wkrp71 I'm not sure how much stock I would put into what your telling the YouTube community considering you don't know the actual album name. FULL Moon Fever.

You're fine, just take a couple plays off.

  • @wkrp71 I see what you mean, I love The band, but I prefer the older stuff.

  • @KeeYaBitch this is from 1985

  • Yankees GTFO.

  • GOD !! I LOVE THIS SONG !!!!

  • I read a biography on Tom Petty discussing his personal life and life as a musician working with the Heartbreakers. Tom claimed that he was not proud of this song and i believe he quoted something like "one of my least favorite songs I have ever written". Well Tom if Rebels is your worst work....go make your next album the equivalent of tracks such as Rebels..and i still might have to buy it! :)

  • @jasonq010 Very interesting stuff! I can see why he would say that. But I feel the same way you do. I do not like what that flag stood (and still stands in some people) for and the term "Dixie" and all that, but I disagree with TP and Rebels is my favorite song of his, and especially this version from 1985. With Confederate Flag and all!!! :)

  • @mateluna what's wrong with dixie and dixie's flag

  • Comment removed

  • He was Barney Rubble?

  • I saw him on this tour....do you think he would still use that flag today?

  • I love Tom Petty :) ever since I was a little girl and my mom played his records..truly one of the best.

  • One of Petty's all time greats that got little airplay. For years this song used to make me tear up, man...Yes, ocan1033, the boy can definitely write. 'Southern Accents' has to be one of the great albums of the 80's. The song 'Southern Accents' is incredible, as well. If you're from the South, you'll know where he's coming from.

  • @tenndawg65 - the young'uns call it country; the Yankees call it dumb ..

  • @ocan1033 I recognize that...where's it from??

  • @ocan1033 I got my own way of talkin, but everything is done with a southern accent where I come from!!

  • I love how Mike plays that badass and super intimidating solo, and plays it like its nothing. :D

  • I'm too drunk to follow ...

  • tom petty FTW.

1 person hates tom petty cuz he ain't tom petty.

  • @itizPWNED Haha.

  • @itizPWNED Screw that P.O.S.

  • This song has been a favorite of mine from childhood til now....I think I want it played at my funeral

  • heard this song on king of the hill

  • anyone have any idea what year this was?? I'm thinking 91 or so

  • @southloopsoxfan It must be back in the mid-eighties, around Band-Aid in 84?

  • @southloopsoxfan it's from the southern accents album, I think around 1985! but it is on the southern accents album.

  • @southloopsoxfan This was recorded at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on August 7th, 1985 during the Southern Accents tour. It was released on CD in late 1985 and on video in early 1986, both under the name of "Pack up the plantation: Live!"

I also wonder if they'd be able to tour with that big confederate flag as the background. Surprised Petty would pick such a symbol.

This video is one of my favorite performances by any US artist.

  • First time I heard this this song was on the Bob Coburn show back in the early 80s-I was about 14 or 15. Bob came on at 1130pm but i had fallen asleep before that but I woke right up when Rebels came on at something like 1215. 26-27 years later and i remember it like it happened last night!

  • ONE DISLIKE! WOOT!

  • Is that a Confederate flag behind him?

  • Ok listen to the music... No one gives two shits and a damn if you wear a Mason Dixon belt buckle which makes you an "Official rebel"

  • stop talking about politics and listen to the song people!!

  • This might be his best video. Wow were they getting after it

  • FUCK POLITICS ace holes

  • Harlow, I'm still on the fence when it comes to the tea party. This group sprung up rather fast to know where they stand on the issues. Perhaps, and more importantly were do they stand on the solutions. If Sarah Palin, is where they stand than, they will evenually, 'stand alone'. Bruce Springsteen, is a diehard liberal, which is very moronic and self distructive but, I still appreciate his poetry.

  • bfnputz, you are right. Lincoln, was a republician. However, I was referring to the liberal media of the last 25 years. Musicians specifically. Most are ass kiss'n liberals. Tom, has the integrity to believe in what he stands for hense, a Rebel in the inductry.

  • @MrDalehendrickson I love him but he's a fucking tea-party member. That's unforgivable.

  • Oh, did you know that Tom Petty is a Republician? Yeah, a real Rebel. God, love him!!

  • @MrDalehendrickson I thought the original "rebels" who walked out of Congress and ceceeded from the Union in 1861 were Democrats? Just wonderin'.

  • @bfnputz yes back in the day. Southerns were primarily democratic. But after the war both parties swaped for some reason. Long live the south. Southern Pride from Arkansas.

  • Saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers play this at Live Aid in 1985, has been in my heart ever since

  • All useless arguments to one side- this is a great song. Rebellious Pete of Scotland! (oops- just had to bring history into this :)) And for 'blue-coated devils', read red-coats. Hail hail the spirit of the Jacobite rebellion of 1745!

  • All useless arguments to one side- this is a great song. Rebellious Pete of Scotland! (oops)

  • What a fucking song! One of TP's very best.

  • Comment removed

  • "...but it was so hard to kick it.."..he had to be talkin' about that smokin' hot chick on the left singin' back-up...Tom is the beast of cool-ality...the world needs more rebels in this increasingly sterile age..

  • I used to have this on a VHS tape!

  • Y'all don't understand when your ancestors rode under the black ! Review Ewings order # 11! Would you be pissed? Fucken aye straight!

  • It is hard bein born a Rebel, but at least a truly great song can be written and played that shows all of OUR hurt, pain and frustration...with no one listening it seems sometimes. Tom and the Band gave us a platform to both be proud and to heal - whoever we are. Again, yes, it's hard to be born a Rebel...all of us. Yet we have a spirit that Sings!

  • @DoowahDiatribe ..it's hard being born, period, life is like a shit sandwich, the more bread you have, the less shit you gotta eat ; )

  • we are all rebels...

  • so was i...

  • One of Tom & the H'Breakers best. Lyrics, Instrumentation, Energy, Talent all rolled into one great song.

  • The only true Politically Correct song ever recorded.

  • i just have to say that was a f~n cool song! You are one of best T.P.

  • IM BUILDING A PULLING TRUCK 1977 FORD F-250 HIGHBOY HIS NAME IS "THE REBEL" AND THIS IS HIS THEME SONG. HOPE TO HAVE HIM RUNNING AND PUT A VIDEO OUT WITH THIS AS BACKGROUND-----Y'ALL HAVE A GOOD ONE-- HEAR?

  • Now you're going to walk out and I'm too drunk to follow - oh ya! Tom writes it AND lives it!

  • Damn It nice flag! Well....this is a good reminder that these are just people we idolize not gods. Just people with different experiences and opinions. all being attachments good or bad. damnit! was my fav band. I have to look up the lyrics.....

  • Maybe the greatest rock band of all time!

    My favorite anyway.

  • @BrickhouseB2 Probably my favorite too, overall. Tom can sure write a good tune, simple enough chords and good lyrics that tell a story. But he would say that the band bring the songs to life.

  • @BrickhouseB2 I can't think of a better one myself. Also my favorite

  • when and where was this recorded?

  • @summerbreez33 world peace LOL LOL LOL LOL great .....

  • one foot in the grave and one foot on the pedal ..

    Yeah, the boy can write.

  • @ocan1033 Yes, ocan1033, the boy can definitely write. 'Southern Accents' has to be one of the great albums of the 80's. The song 'Southern Accents' is incredible, as well. If you're from the South, you'll know where he's coming from.

  • @ocan1033 Is "one foot in the grave and one foot on the pedal" the Southern style of driving? That could be the NASCAR slogan. The South kicks ass but I hate the cops down there. Their slogan should be "stop or we'll reload". Those pigs don't mess around. A lot of them use hollow point bullets.

  • @Jefgg All cops every where use hollow point bullets.

  • @Swordsman375 Really? I know the good thing about hollow point bullets is that you don't have to worry about through and throughs. But hollow points are much more lethal. Back in the day Southern cops used hollow point bullets and a lot of Northern cops were still using pee shooters. I am a big fan of teflon coated bullets just in case I ever had to take down an asshole in a bulletproof vest. I also like mercury tipped bullets. Guns don't kill people. Ammo kills people.

  • @Jefgg Really. Also, there are not any Teflon coated bullets on the market now, and no one has ever manufactured "mercury tipped bullets." Why don't you read a book or two before you make ridiculous comments that you aren't able to back up.

  • @Swordsman375 Of course, these bullets are not on the market. You have to customize them yourself.

  • Just read all these comments ...just proves...there isn't anything petty about Petty , He'll make you think.

  • mike cambell is the man

  • See nobody hates Tom Petty.Look at the likes. Ur awsm Tom

  • hey hey HAAAAY! :D love it love it <3

  • Oh man, just perfect!

  • Jesus, this is as good American poetry as Robert Frost (and with the same bitter edge, too)

  • one week straight ...

  • peace+love

  • everybody just shut the fuck up and listen to the song.

  • im going to see him tomorrow night!!!!!!

    woooooooo
