Does the melee weapons on xbox not take over the pistol position?

it does but the system gives you a pistol to use only when your down.

On normal difficulty, if I get surrounded by zombies, I'll just aim it at the ground and fire, killing most of them.

Though do not use the gun as often as you like, conserve it for special infected or for just hellish ambushes, use duel pistols for basically everything else

duel pistol is good for not using bullets like survival mode but u get raped in horde attack. melee weapon is the best option I personal dun prefer chain saw because It takes some time to cahrge it up and has a limit of enery

no you drop it as soon as you switch to another weapon but you can pick it back up again

Not super excited to see the melee limiter in what appears to be the campaign. I only play expert, and I melee a good bit. But when going to vs or survival, that thing always messes me up! But Im sure Ill get used to it
