  • very informative! especially the bit about getting the length right.

  • @detroitdieselpower Yes, most seem to think that you get the length correct by comparing the 2 ends, but this is irrelevant. It's where the 'top' of the right-hand end comes (in relation to the collar) which is important. The rest will be correct, if the tie has been adjusted to match the collar size. Thanks for the comment.

  • by far the best of all the tutorials thank you sir

  • Reply to southerncomforted14: Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm glad it worked for you.

  • OMG! 20 minutes ago, I had no idea how to tie a bowtie for my husband . . . now, after watching the video, and practicing a few times, it's a piece of cake! Thank you for posting the video!

  • Reply to rfasmom: Brilliant! This is what we like to hear! (Now you must teach your husband to manage it himself. It is, as you say, a piece of cake!) Thanks for the comment.

  • My goodness! That is HARD to do! I love bow ties but I want to learn how to actually tie them, not buying them already made. This is very useful. Thanks a lot!!!!

  • Reply to @edanherg: I'm sorry you find this porcess difficult. I suppose it's just a matter of practice. I timed myself the other day, and I can tie a bow tie, without hurrying at all, in a little over 2 minutes. Keep at it, and you'll reach this stage sooner than you think. Thanks for the comment.

  • I must have watched thirty other videos about this, but this one was the only one that actually helped. Thanks a million.

  • Reply to benystrider: I know how frustrating it can be, looking for a video which actually delivers the goods, and I'm glad you found this useful. Thanks for the comment.

  • thanks.

however, when I liked your video I got a recommendation for a video entitled "how to tie a bow tie (with Playboy)" and I wished I'd watched that one instead.

    thank you.

  • Reply to alphon5e: I have seen the Play Boy offering, and it's great - if you can remember the instructions afterwards! Thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you for the detailed explanation! It is nice to see someone speak of symmetry as I too prefer a nice clean correct look.

  • Reply to fearsomegladiator: Ah yes ... Symmetry is most important! Thanks for your comment.

  • thankyou so much!

  • Reply to MegaBengin: My pleasure. Thanks for commenting.

  • Further comment from madcwk1: @Offshoreorganbuilder I will "re-comment here", she learned after watching you just a couple of times, she did it all by herself today in fact!

  • Now that IS impressive!

  • My daughter picked it up right away from watching your video! She wore her tie to school today in fact! I'm very impressed with her and with your tutorial!

  • Reply to madcwk1: That must have caused some comment at school. I'll bet none of the others could manage this! Thanks for letting me know.

  • excellent. this is the simplest explanation!

  • Reply to hillreo: It's good to know that you found the explanation easy to follow. Thanks for taking the trouble to comment.

  • I can now finally tie a bow tie properly thanks to this video! All of the others go too fast and skip out important details, so thank you for your clear and concise demonstration!

  • @borodav I'm very pleased to hear this. Good luck, and thanks for your comment.

  • Thanks for the testimonial, and good luck with your ties!

  • Comment from terry321xx:

I've looked at a few different 'vidoes' but none has worked - until now. A good friend of mine gave your instructions 10 out of 10. I am now wearing a self-tied bow tie and feel very satisfied with my efforts, following your excellent and clear instructions. Seems easy now, but it has eluded me for a while. Thank you very much.

  • Thank you! That's how I learnt tieing a bow tie. :-)

  • @Cassandrobp Nice to know that I am following the classic pattern of tying! Thanks for the comment.

  • Very helpful

  • @bosscorleonetv Good to hear this, and thanks for the comment.

  • So helpful!!!!!!

  • @PoeTones114 Thanks for your comment, and good luck with the tie!

  • Tightest knot on all of Youtube. Thanks! Explaining the adjustment process was most helpful.

  • @madtonesbr Thanks for your comment. On the whole,I prefer the least tight knot possible, because it is kinder on the material and the tie will last longer. Everything depends on the make-up of the tie, however.A brocade tie can be tied with a relatively 'loose' knot, and still hold its shape and look well (see 'How to tie a bow tie fully explained, Part 2') whereas the yellow tie shown here is a very fine silk and ties to a tighter knot - necessary if it is to stay tied and not 'droop' in time.

  • Simply the best explanation I've found yet, thank you ever so much.

  • @notsqueegi I'm very that pleased you find it so. Thanks for the comment.

  • Very good video, thank you for using a non-black tie.

  • Reply to brthr2danite: So many bow tie videos make the mistake of using a black tie, which is difficult enough to tie in reality, let alone to watch on a video. Glad this helped, and thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you for all your help sir. Your awesome!!

  • @TheBabyfacejackson Congratulations on your successful tying! (And thanks for your comment.)

  • Very helpful, thank you sir! Blessings...

  • @PreachBlackMan100 I'm glad you found this useful. Thanks for the comment.

  • THANKS to You Tube, and/or Internet Explorer, for fixing the problem with my accessing this page. They also have the current viewing figures showing! Well done!

  • This helped me a lot last year and I just was watching it cuz I wanted a refresh on the PERFECT knot. One question though. Why do you wear your wedding ring on your pinky finger?

  • Reply to ackafooo: Many thanks for your comment. It's good to know that people come back to this video in preference to the others, and I'm glad to know it was helpful, first time around.

  • This video stands out as the best one for the beginner. I looked at others, but this is the one that got me through the two areas that the other videos tended to gloss over. Well done, and thank you.

  • Reply to dlleboeuf: Yes, it *is* surprising how short most of the other videos are, and as a result they do not explain all the obvious points for the benefit of those who have no experience. I'm glad you found this one worked for you and thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you so much! I've been trying for a week to learn how to tie a bow tie! I watched this video and got it on my first try!

  • @GravityBee1 Many thanks for letting me know of your success. Well done!

  • Thanks so much for the video! By far the best I've found on youtube. Wouldn't have been able to impress as much as I did at my NYE soiree without your help. It still took me a bit of time to get it right, but it definitely paid off.

  • Reply to mrqjam: Some ties are easier to tie than others, depending on the material and the pattern, and I may at some time do a 'part 3' video to cover this and other minor points, but it's good to read that you managed to appear at the soiree with the real thing! With a bit of practice, it will get easier, though you should go over the technique using an old tie, or even a bit of broad ribbon, to save wear on your best tie. Thanks for the comment.

  • THANK YOU! I've been using some written instructions for years, and every time I wear the tux it takes me 20 minutes to figure out the tie. I tied it in one try while watching your video.

  • @jimstoic It's very good to hear this. Now you have the technique, a little practice and you'll be tying a bow tie in under 3 minutes with no problems! Thanks for your comment.

  • NEW YEAR'S DAY, 2012 ... Following the 're-organization' of You Tube, the view count on this video was frozen at 197,516. The true figure (available on my 'Insight' page) is now 236,819, having peaked at an all-time high of around 9,000 views in one day on December 31st. I would like to wish all viewers of this presentation a HAPPY NEW YEAR (together with You Tube, who have made the spread of this information possible - and hope that they sort out the problems with their *new* look, soon!)

  • There is not enough I can say to even begin to thank you for this video & how well you explained each and every step. I now get to wear a real bow tie for New Year's Eve and it was all thanks to you! You are amazing!!!

  • @rayryry09 I'm very glad you found this useful. Thanks for taking the trouble to comment and I hope you enjoyed the party!

  • MAN THANK YOU!!! You are awesome and your video is perfect! I have successfully tied my bow tie, and heading out to a NYE party! Thank you!!!!

  • @villanuevaj82 This is great news! This video also peaked in views a year ago and I'm glad that you are one of those who made it to the party with a REAL tie having seen it. Thanks for this comment.

  • Very clear and easy to follow!

  • @MrHalted I'm glad you found it so. Thanks for commenting.

  • 47 years old and, because of your video, I have just had my first successful experience tying a bow tie. I've tried dozens of diagrams and other videos which all end in frustration and my walking in shame to the closet to dig out the old clip on. Not today, I'm off to New Years Eve party tonight with a real tie. Thank you!

  • Reply to dlm212: Many thanks for this heart-warming comment! No more the walk of shame ... more the walk of *fame*! Hope you enjoyed the party.

  • Thank you so much. Took me only twice to make it perfect.

  • @thelosthat Excellent news! This is great to hear. Thanks for the comment.

  • I'm attending a New Years black tie event tonight and for the first time I can wear a 'real' bow tie instead of those awful fake ones. Thank you for explaining this so clearly, you are a superstar.

  • @esheridan1 Thanks for the comment and the compliment. I shall think of you, tonight, lauding it over a sea of black-tied incompetents, with their FAKE ties!

  • you the man!

  • @tezzbar Thanks for this! Much appreciated!

  • This is the ONLY video that I could actually tie the bow tie! Thanks so much your amazing at explaining!

  • @keetz15 My pleasure. I'm glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for the comment.

  • i watched alot of bow tie videos and this is the only video that really helped the most! thanks old timer!

  • @MrTbber Glad you found this helpful, young shaver! (Thanks for the comment.)

  • Sine labore nihil! It took me a few goes but in the end I did it. Your video is by far the most helpful on youtube. Many thanks!

  • Reply to adamshappy: I think you may have to translate that first phrase for some of us (!) but I'm glad to read that your efforts have been rewarded. Practise a few times, and you will be fully proficient in no time! (Thanks for the comment.)

  • You sir...are a genius. A men amongst men. I am so happy right now, I could throw a fit!

  • Reply to cmjbanx: Thanks for your enthusiastic comment, and I'm very pleased that the video helped. (But please, do NOT throw a fit. You need to keep your hand/eye co-ordination for tying your next tie - and the one after that, and so on!) Good to hear from you.

  • I tried to for a long time to learn, then i thought i learned it - but there was something wrong with the not, it was'nt pretty... Then I realized, when i watched your video, that I tied the first knot "opposit" :) Thanks for sharing this video! It saved me! :D

  • Reply to rakjaer: Glad to know everything is untangled for you, now! (Anything is easy, if you know how!)

  • I want but a bow tie right about now.

  • @rbenia Then go to it and buy one! (It might help to see my second bow tie video, "How to tie a bow tie - Fully Explained, Part 2.") Good luck and thanks for your comment.

  • Fantastic video! bow ties rock!

  • @willyusa Thanks! Bow ties do, indeed, rock (but only when they're the genuine article. If not, they're a source of embarrassment!) Thanks for the comment.

  • really helpful

  • @sanchezcy Glad you found it so. Thanks for the comment.

  • My girlfriend bought me my first bow tie this Christmas and though I've worn a few, they were always clip on. It took me a while, but your video is definitely the most thorough, yet simplified explanation of how to tie a real one. As of now, I will never wear a clip-on bow tie again! Thank you for uploading this.

  • Reply to rsgzdhgDRHGD : Ah ... now that you have discovered the real thing, I'm sure that the clipped-on aberration will be but a painful memory! Thanks for your interesting comment.

  • AAAHHHH this was great!! my first bowtie!! thank you!

  • Reply to: RilesAndPiles23: Your first of many, I hope! Glad to know the video helped and thanks for the comment.

  • this is THE BEST explanation on how to tie a bow tie!! @Offshoreorganbuilder well done, hope to see more like this.

  • Reply to senorcraig09: Thanks for your kind comments and for being my first commentator of Christmas! Good luck with the ties!

  • Saturday, Dec. 24th., 2011 UPDATE ON PROBLEMS WITH Youtube:I have now discovered a way to access this page to approve and reply to comments. The solution proved to be to abandon Internet Explorer and change to Google Chrome as a web browser. Now everything except the view count(actually over 210,000 at the moment and not the 197,516 stated)is working normally. Is this a ploy by Google & Youtube, to promote Google Chrome? My apologies to those who have had to wait for me to respond to their comments.

  • I agree! Brilliant! Very thorough. Oddly, I'm watching this so I can help my DAUGHTER tie her new Brooks Brothers tie! She loves Darren Criss on Glee and he wears bow ties. I'm sure we will be successful if we follow your tips!

  • @madcwk1 Thanks for your unusual comment. I'm sure your daughter will look very smart in her Brooks Brothers tie!

  • brilliant!

    thanks for the help!

  • @bringmemybow Glad you found this useful, and thanks for the comment.

  • It worked! Thanks man.

  • @sinoa03 You're very welcome! Thanks for the comment.

  • this is ridiculous, we know it's a fish and you talk way too much! someone needs to bring justice to bow tie instructional videos!

  • @DanielKhaliliProduct 3 days ago, I sent you a message asking if you had actually managed to tie your bow tie. ~ Reply came there NONE! (By the way, it's not a fish, it's a bow tie, and I'm sorry you think I talk way too much, but then again, I think your grammar is way too little, so I suppose that makes us even?!)

  • I actually made a bow tie before knowing how to tie it. Once I watched this tutorial, I modified my pattern to suit this very clear simple method for producing a perfect bow. Thank you Offshoreorganbuilder!

  • @51Speedfox My pleasure. I'd be interested to see a picture of your bow tie. What material did you use?

  • I've posted pictures at " jerpfahlies.blogspot.com "

  • I sent a picture of one of my ties to Vogue that I made from a vintage McCall's pattern #2568, recommending that they publish the pattern again. I also sent them a link to your videos as a wonderful reference.

  • @51Speedfox Now that I have seen your ties, I congratulate you, especially on the red one, which looks very crisp and stylish. I've no doubt each one took a deal of making, but it looks as if the results are well worth it.

  • One last request: some bow ties are not fish shaped, but straight. how does one tie one of these?

  • @51Speedfox The straight bow tie (i.e. one without a waist) is tied in just the same way as a standard 'butterfly' pattern. The difficulty is knowing just where to start the first knot (over the collar button) and only experience of the individual tie will help you, here. The finished result is rather like a ribbon tied around the neck, but it *is* very discrete, especially when worn under the collar, rather than in front of it. Personally, I prefer a tie with more shape, even worn in this way.

  • Very in depth thank you very much!

  • @candyraved I'm glad you found it so, and thanks for the comment.

  • Sunday, December 18th, 2011: ON-GOING APOLOGY: Due to continuing problems with Youtube and (presumably) its change to a new format, the total views on this video remain frozen at 197,516, whereas the actual figure (shown on my Insite page) is over 201,000. Worse, several comments (which I have approved) are not listed here, neither can I reply to them. Thank you to those who have commented and 'liked' this video and I hope it continues to be useful to those who view it. Happy Christmas!

  • best how to video I found, thanks!

  • @ABabyPenguin Thanks for your encouraging comment.

  • My clip on is now safely in my man drawer with the old batteries and camera films from 1987. Thanks.

  • Reply to m4tylong: The drawer is the best place for such an abomination! Now, you can go forth into the world wearing the genuine article, and not some dreadful, artificial substitute (rather like comparing an electronic with the real pipe organ!) Thanks for the comment.

  • Best instructions I received for tying a bow tie. Many thanks.

  • Thanks for your enthusiastic comment! Glad to have helped.

  • You, sir, are a hero. The only video or printed instructions that made any sense.

  • @elwormsby Thanks for this encouraging comment. I'm glad you found it helpful.

  • you are the god of bowties! thanks soooo much!

  • @tatum21212 Thank YOU for the comment, and the deification!

  • The best video on how to do this!!! Thanks! Was very clear about the end part.

  • @anomaly57 Yes, the finishing stages are often omitted or skimmed over in instructions, and yet they are essential to the perfect bow. Thanks for taking the trouble to comment.

  • Just dropping a note to say a hearty THANK YOU for this video! It had been years since I'd worn a bow tie, and I needed a quick refresher on how to tie -- and your excellent video was the demo that brought it all back. Good job, and thanks again!

  • @maurymccown Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you are now refreshed in this essential skill!

  • Sunday, December 11th., 2011: AN APOLOGY: Due to the 'improvements' being made by the worthies at You Tube, my access to this page is now unbelievably SLOW and I have missed being able to approve the comments of at least 2 people who were good enough to leave positive remarks. My apologies for this. Normal service will be resumed as soon as You Tube sorts the problem out and returns to the arrangement which worked perfectly well before! Meanwhile, good luck with your ties!

  • awesome, I've been using this video for about a year, and now I've got it down pat. Thanks!

  • @newyorklowlife Glad to hear it, and thanks for your comment.

  • Bang on Instruction. Thank You Sir.

  • @plagick I'm pleased this helped, and that you found the video to your liking. Thanks for taking the trouble to comment.

  • Thank you very very much! You saved my life today! Thanks for being clear, concise and helpful!

  • @McBangus Thanks for your encouraging comment. It's good to know that you found this useful.

  • Wonderful, thank you!

  • @Suziessoliloquy My pleasure. I'm glad it helped.

  • Thank you for posting this video. It was a HUGE help. I watched so many videos while trying to tie my husbands bow tie and yours was the only one that made sense.

  • @jentan1010 Very glad to hear this. Now that you can manage it, you'll have to teach HIM how to do it for himself. Thanks for commenting.

  • Absolutely the best bow tie tutorial available on the internet! I waded through so many other videos and couldn't do it all. My first go after watching this and I did it! Many many thanks, you are a hero (and now I will look like James Bond).

  • Reply to kupo876: I'm sure you will, and any minute now a bevy of beautiful girls will be beating a path to your door, having found a real man who actually knows how to tie a bow tie! (Thanks for the comment.)

  • Excellent video, nice and slow, even someone as ham fisted as myself can now tie a bow tie.

    Many Thanks

  • Reply to BrianMauriceC: I'm sure you are no more ham-fisted than the majority - and it is the majority who cannot tie a bow tie! It's good to know that you now have the problem 'sorted,' as they say. Thanks for the comment.

  • Excellent Walkthrough!! like others, watched other videos and spent hours attempting, got it done on the first try with this... Thanx!

  • Reply to Izxnox: Thanks for your positive comment. As you say, there are many videos out there on this subject which seem to make matters worse - often because they try to explain the technique too quickly. Glad it worked for you!

  • this is the best video I have found here on youtube. doesn't skip any steps! thanks!

  • Reply to gianpippero: We aim to please! Thanks for the comment.

  • Reply to gianpippero: We aim to please! Thanks for the comment.

  • Highly instructional. Thanks so much, I practiced twice after watching and have a reasonable facsimile of a bow! Thank You!

  • Reply to VSStriker: Well done! Tie a bow tie once every day, and within 2 weeks you'll be dong it in your sleep! (Thanks for the comment.)

  • very good, very helpful

  • Reply to 19KeyLo: I'm glad this suited you and thanks for commenting.

  • thank you, spent nearly two hours trying to figure this out, now can do it in a few seconds, best video on Youtube

  • Reply to 1991Historybuff: Glad to hear it, and thanks for the comment.

  • Waw! Thank goodness I found your video, it's very concise and easy to follow. Thank you! You've saved my partner from carrying an extra bow tie to drape around his neck at the close of the evening. I am giggling writing this as I find it funny he wears a pre-tied one, yet appears at the end of the evening with an open one.

  • Reply to Nicolapeep: Thank you for your interesting comment. So ... a certain amount of deception going on, eh? Now that the truth has been revealed, I suggest that your partner practises to the point at which he can pronounce himself a little warm at the end of the dinner (or whatever) and remove the tie in front of the rest of the party (the men of which will be grinding their teeth) and then, before leaving, re-tie it, to the astonishment of all!

  • Easily the best bow tie tying vid on the net! thanks mate! :)

  • Reply to: Henners929292: You're very welcome. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

  • So good! You saved my life with this video. All of the attractive women are now chasing me around campus

  • Reply to MrCaligulablush: Great stuff! (I've had the same problem for years.) Don't let them catch you, *too* easily! Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • fantastic, really appreciated it, I have finally got this one

  • Reply to 40704400: I'm very glad to hear this, and thanks for the comment.

  • Got it! Thanks very much!

  • Reply to loljdawson: It's a pleasure. Thanks for the good news!

  • Great instructional video...once I found your video, I got mine tied in less than 1/2 an hour...

  • Reply to airwreck56: This is good news! Once you're in practice, you'll be tying a bow tie in the same time it takes to tie an standard neck tie. Thanks for taking the trouble to comment.

  • @Offshoreorganbuilder I have to say that your video was by far the most well explained and methodical one on YT. Thanks for taking the time. I do have to say, though, that there's a pretty good one by a seven year old--just so you know your competition :)

  • Reply to airwreck56: Thanks for the compliment. The number of views and positive comments on the video is very encouraging and, yes, I have seen the one by the 7-year-old, and I entirely agree, it *is* very good. He shows just how easy it is to tie a bow tie, once you have the correct method (*and* he seems to do it without a mirror, which is more than I can manage!) Good luck with your tie tying ...

  • Thank you!! If only I had found this two hours ago! I now need to go apologise to a few people for shouting so much :)

This was by far the clearest, and best paced instruction i have found, and i'v found a lot!

    Thank you very much

  • @danno89: Sorry to hear that you reached the shouting stage (though I can understand it, after the wretched tie has fallen from the grasp for the twentieth time, and the 'hole' through which part of it is meant to be stuffed can be neither seen, nor felt. However, as you see, with the correct technique and a mirror, tying a bow tie is no great problem. The Victorians and Edwardians did it as a matter of course. I'm glad to hear that you have conquered the problem and thanks for your comment.

  • Message from danno89: To:offshoreorganbuilder The non existent hole was exactly the problem! As someone who secretly prides themselves on logic and ability to follow simple instruction i was getting quite irate! But thanks for the help

  • Thanks so much! My husband was trying to tie his for about an hour before he finally gave up and let me have a go. With your video I had it the first time, just had to repeat it for practice so it was perfected. The tip you gave about folding it was exactly what we were missing. Thanks again! :)

  • Reply to TinnyC236: Ah, ... but can *he* tie it, now? (If not, you'll have to teach him!) As you say, folding the first bow across keeps the whole thing stable enough for you to accomplish the rest. Thanks for letting me know, and now you also have an idea for a Christmas present, perhaps!

  • Victory! Thank you!

  • Reply to jimbobillybob1221: Excellent! Well done, and thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you so much. This was so informative and detailed. You even explained how to adjust it and where the fingers should be. Great video!!!
