@SportSquash Let's be honest. Tennis kicks squash and racquetball's ass. There are 10 times more tennis players than squash and racquetball combined. The world knows who Agassi, Nadal, Sampras and Federer are. Does anyone know who Power, Shabana, Nicol and the Khans are (Squash), nor does anyone know who Hogan, Swain, Walenchuk and Monchik are (racquetball). Get over it, tennis players make millions while squash and racquetball players are luck to buy a deli (props Suds).
racquetballs not as visually appealing as tennis so thats why it wouldnt get much tv coverage. not the action of the sport but the setting itself. Still this was an amazing display of skill!
we are reading a story called The Challenge in class its about a boy lying and said hes won tournaments of racquetball this is one of the things he lied about
@vgmaster9 Racquetball more coverage than tennis. Now that is really a good laugh, considering than there are 10 times more tennis players than racquetball players.
@vgmaster9 that ain't saying a lot considering football, basketball and baseball have LOADS of coverage compared to tennis. i can never even find a tennis game on espn
@vgmaster9 i definitely haven't watched EPSN. maybe that's why. i check ESPN all the time and never see tennis. just world poker and bio's on former football players, unless baseball/basketball/football season has started
@Fernandez218 just gotta watch during the opens or wimbledon, its usually on one channel or the other. Dont forget all the coverage of tiger woods they have on there. As far as diversity in sports go, theyre missing out big time, and since when is poker a sport, is keeping your face muscles straight a real calorie burner?
@snowyphil65 i ain't arguing with you here. i wish there were more racket sports shown on ESPN -- PERIOD. I love racquetball, tennis, ping-pong, etc.. not in that particular order. I just want to see good rallies or good shots or both, from good players. thanks for the heads up!
@Fernandez218 im not a huge tennis fan but ill watch it once in a while, ping pongs a blast and they very rarely show it, i have never seen racquetball on espn, its a real shame because its about the most exciting racquet sport there is
i was too until i realized that it only hurts a bit after but never immediately following...especially after you actually make your shot :) if you dive and hit your hip or hand but make it...you are back on your feet and too caught up to worry about the pain....unfortunately though, right now i have a 5" bruise on my right hip from landing wrong...and didnt get my shot either...bummer.
Like others have said, the racquets have evolved big time. My guess is that these guys were using at least 225 gram vs. what I'm currently using at 150 gram with more power, precision and overall strength than what was available during the early 90s. Swain and Sweeney are legends to say the least. Croakies and short shorts anyone? lol
The rules are pretty simple. You only score points when you serve. The ball has to pass the service box and has to hit the front wall first. Return shots must hit the front wall before hitting the floor. If after a shot is made the ball bounces on the floor twice, the point is over.
Racquets have totally evolved, especially GearBox racquets. I have to say they're the greatest thing. Personal favorite: GearBox 165 Featherweight, strung around 34 pounds, with Gamma Strings (neon green).
great footage from a great year ... think this was Cliff's second prostop after being away for 2 years (tennis yrs) ... Sweeney was great as well ... would've been great if he had stay with the pro game.
Fair point..racquetball generally is not a game of finesse like squash is. However, there are different game styles, such as power (like these two players) and control. I guess the counter-point that some folks might make is: squash is slow and boring. But I enjoy personally appreciate and enjoy both sports.
I think every player has a different style. There are times for hard shots, but then again there are times for soft shots. In my opinion, rball and squash are not even similar. It's like comparing ping pong to badminton.
There is actually alot of finesse involved in racquetball. Keep in mind these pro players keep an extremely high level of accuracy as well as tremendous power. Every shot is pre-meditated and is not just a crude bling mad-ape swing towards the front wall.
These two are power players. There are a lot of finesse and and aimed shots that require a much softer touch. I can't slam the ball so I have to play with touch.
@abhinavc There's plenty of finesse but less compared to squash. But all the hard hits are measured and strategic even if it just looks crude. A hapless smash ends up setting up your opponent.
Cliff Swain is my hero. I'm sure every1 thinks this...but I wonder if they had the newer racquets. Could have used some more stylish goggles too..geez
I'm just beginning to learn racquetball, and watching the pro's is amazing.
