You can't hear in vacum because there is no air which would hit your ears to make electromagnetic signal send to your brain, but it's not a problem to catch electromagnetic waves and covert them into sound- the machine just made the job of your ears. There is a sound in space, only your ears are not designed to work in vacuum you limited.

Being that in our part of the galaxy there aren't too many man-made radio frequencies, this makes it easier to send and receive these signals and to code them into sound once we receive them back here on earth.
