I know government agencies like the NSA have the power to hack (and, even they have very complicated laws they have to adhere to), but I don't see how a newspaper or media corporation has any power to hack. I mean, hackers often end up in jail, so I don't see why they'd want to risk it.

I never cared for Hugh Grant as an actor and was not impressed with his stint with the LAPD in Hollywood but he now has my respect as a person , Hats Off to Hugh Grant bravo

I still don't understand exactly what this particular story is. I heard about it first on the Max Keiser website. I know government agencies like the NSA have the power to hack (and, even they have very complicated laws they have to adhere to), but I don't see how a newspaper or media corporation has any power to hack. I mean, hackers often end up in jail, so I don't see why they'd want to risk it.
Sorry for asking very basic/naive questions.

@mphello by hacking they're referring to the practice of accessing a person's voicemail, which can be done either by discovering their pin access code, or, if they haven't applied a pin, by simply phoning their voicemail number, so it's not exactly hacking in the true sense of the word, what they mean really is "accessing illegally" which is what they've done here. It appears that News of the World, a mainstream tabloid, has been illegally accessing the voicemail of crime victims.

A brave man. The UK tabloids are voracious, and will do literally anything to smear people who threaten them - leaking medical records, hacking phones, blackmailing politicians into obedience. For Hugh Grant, a man with a well publicised history of naughty behaviour, to take this principled stand against corruption and illegality, is frankly heroic. Much respect. I hope he succeeds.

The corruption is institutional, it infects all areas of government & all parties. It exists in socialist, capitalist & communist countries, it exists anywhere that power is condensed in the hands of a few. Government is not something the masses can abdicate in a voting booth, if we dont hold them to account & make rules that bind them, then we get this.

true free market capitalism will never exist. when i said 'capitalism', i was referring to the 'system' that is currently causing the decay in society and our environment.
Capitalism is "an economic system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated for profit." What we have today is a dirty form of capitalism that has evolved through centuries of greed and oppression by the monarchy, the elite and the church.
i suppose you could call it a Plutocracy.

@capitalistbotherer Capitalism would require that everyone has the right to capital, be it a toothbrush, an acre of land an Xbox360 or whatever, that the individual has the right to the goods or property they posess. It would require that each individual at birth is given an equal share of national capital & that they keep ALL the wealth they generate. It also requires that we have virtually no public servants, that people are paid on merit by their endevour, not from illegal punitive taxes.

i agree, but we use a fiat currency. wealth is being stolen via inflation every day.
if you stuck a £10 note in a safety deposit box, it would lose around 5% of it's purchasing power every year. in order to keep 100% of your wealth, you'd need to convert it into precious metals/something with intrinsic value and go back to using gold and silver as money.
